Project Zomboid is a zombie survival game for the PC. It was recently updated and now is the best time to jump in. Your only goal is survival. How you do that is up to you. Do note that this is still in Alpha. A lot of progress has been made lately but it's still a buggy game.

At a glance...

  • Find a place to call home and fortify it
  • Scavenge for food, drink and supplies
  • Avoid the zombie hoards
  • Build weapons and craft items
  • Try not to injure yourself or fall ill
  • Control your mood; fight off depression
  • Survive
  • Die
  • You can have any type of zombie you want. Runners? Cool. Shamblers? Go for it.
  • You can tweak a lot of things including the time it takes for power/water to go out and the length of the day/night cycle

The new website just launched and the below image is a good summary of what the game is like.

The new version has just been released so there aren't many good screenshots or videos that are up to date. The screenshots below are just simple ones that I took.

Hadn't tried this game for a while. Unfortunately I think it was overshadowed by games like DayZ.

Anyway, I remember watching some YouTube videos about two years ago and finding this game.

It's pretty funny how the opening tutorial sold the game for me (especially that pillow part).

This game is mapped out of a real town in Kentucky? Is that true?

If true, first rule is to find that house where the "Guntucky" people live at!

The game has changed a lot since the beginning. I remember getting it and then dropping it because it was so unbelievably buggy. The newest build is great though. Haven't had any crashes yet. Plus the devs are releasing constant updates now.

Pretty sure it is based on a real place in Kentucky. Only downside is there isn't a huge metropolitan area just yet but they're still adding to the map and mods will help defeat that issue soon enough.

bought this back when it was just a really terrible wife murdering tutorial.

it's okay at the moment but it lacks any certain reason to survive since safety is infinitely more boring than doing things that will get you killed

They haven't fixed the Desura version. The game is good and potentially can be great, but these dudes have a ways to go to become professionals.

I also bought it when it was a Wife Murdering Simulator and I didn't really like it, though I could see it had lots of potential. Maybe it's time to give it another chance.

Yea they have been awful but they're on the right track it seems.

The Desura version is NOT the one to play. You have to download the latest forum build.

The game doesn't have NPCs or a story yet but it hopefully it'll be coming soon enough.

It's been a long time since I've watched footage of this game... they have done a stunning job overhauling the characters.

Is there still multiplayer planned for it at some point?

Yea but I wouldn't expect it any time soon. It'll be on Steam before then.

Bought this game yesterday, not really sure why. I saw some Twitch streams and it seemed like fun.

Anyway, went through all the Desura shit, another games client I don't want. Booting up the game I have the choice between 32x and 64x. 64 does nothing, 32 boots up some oldschool DOS loader or something, I haven't seen that in ages.

Game gives me the option between "survival" and "sandbox", no idea what the difference is. I pick sandbox, create my character and start the game. There is no tutorial, no introduction. I walk around the house, take some supplies and head out to the streets. Raid some houses, somehow glitch through a second-floor wall, drop and break some bones. End up getting attacked by 3 zombies. I take out my baseball bat - I hit the front zombie repeatedly but it does nothing. I get killed. Game over and the game exits to desktop. No main menu, it just straight up terminates. I guess when you die, it really is GAME OVER.

I will say this though - once the multiplayer portion is implemented, the popularity of this game will skyrocket.

Let me show you through these halls, my friend, where treasures of indie gaming await...

Oh yeah I remember listening to a Podcast and I saw a great stream about this, I believe.

I wonder if we will see this on Mac fellow GAFfers?

EDIT: Seems it's already there. Linux Version too!

I just got the game yesterday. I am loving every minute of it! The only issue I am having is saving and loading. Anyone have any info on this?
Also how do you all like split screen coop?

So Project Zomboid was one of the games that motivated me to get into PC gaming. Even more than DayZ, this game is everything I ever wanted in a zombie game. Unfortunately I can't buy it

See, my only means of buying games online are Steam wallet or Visa gift card. The gift card is only valid in the US and I can't use it on Desura. And trust that was the first thing I rushed to do when I got the card so imagine my disappointment.

I finally played the demo today and even though the demo is incredibly outdated, it's still an amazing experience. I left the damn oven on, a horde of zombies swarmed into the house, and soon the house was aflame. I can't think of any game where you have to mindful of such small details

So if anyone's interested, I have a Steam key for Electronic Super Joy as well as the bolded Steam/Desura keys here to trade for Project Zomboid

I have been watching the MathasGames play-through of this and must say it looks great. Really surprised to find the thread empty though, thought there would have been more hype surrounding it. Might have to get it, looks very atmospheric and bleak.

1. Would the current version run well on a mid-2012 Macbook Air?
2. Could I play competently with a trackpad? (Don't feel like breaking out a mouse.)
3. Is the game any good?

I'm feeling like picking this one up and playing. But unless the answers are 'yes, yes, yes' it isn't realistic.

I just bought this yesterday and it's today updated to include official multiplayer and 3D character models. Good timing I hope.

I've been playing with some friends with the last beta multiplayer. It's been pretty fun, but looking for fun ways to make it more challenging.

A GAF game would probably be really fun.

Talk of DayZ and H1Z1 got me thinking about Zomboid again. I hadn't played it in a while. Development's still going strong; the most recent updates were this week

Dev posted a video of the new animations being worked on
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NfLxFdG1-G4
“This is still WIP, and is just a demo of a few new things in the new animation system. General running will be separate from a sprint ability, which gives you a boost to speed but quickly tires you, lowers your ability to manoeuvre and increases a risk of a fall or collision.”

“Characters will have much more physical presence in the world, and inertia and change of speed is now a factor with regard to animation. This will also allow us to branch off different ramifications given the character’s mental and physical state. Panicked survivors who are not looking where they are going may run into problems (quite literally) while unfit, clumsy or undexterous characters may perform actions slower, or be more likely to mess up, fall or perhaps fail to scale a fence at an inopportune time.”

This OT and game needs far more love.

B32 is adding a bunch of new shit that I've been begging for, mainly distraction and craftible bombs/electronics. here is the Build 32 changelog with the new shit

Animations seem to be pushed back to B33, but the zombie AI seems to have gotten a major bump and they are fucking smart as hell now.

I'm running local servers to play with my brother, but if people want I will host a server for GAF and make a white list.

Compared to a year ago, this game has gotten really fucking good. With more features getting fleshed out, this is THE zombie game to play.

Are you playing on 32 IWBUMS? I just realised that possibly losing my save is no big deal in a game where I'll be dead within hours anyway so I should just switch to it and play with the new stuff now.

Compared to a year ago, this game has gotten really fucking good. With more features getting fleshed out, this is THE zombie game to play.

Separating this bit of your post for emphasis, it's been great watching this game evolve over the last year (3 whole posts ago).

Yea, I'm doing B32 IWBUMS, public isn't out yet.

I noticed that zombie populations have basically exploded in this build, almost the point of unplayable. I can't move around West Point with my brother without having massive hordes forming. There is no place to go without a horde of 15-20 zeds forming a ball of doom.

It most likely has to do with the new zombie spawning mechanic they introduced, but the fact they made zeds smarter and more lethal WITH an (accidental?) increase in zombie population makes it fucking insanely hard.

The new crafting recipies are good, unfinished though. Fire can literally take a whole day to kill a zombie, and when you have 100+ zombies on fire from a molly running through houses, it's not difficult to completely burn down a whole block (which I did). So fire needs to be tweeked a bit, or you're going to burn down the whole map.

Sounds aren't in yet for the new recipies. I threw an alarm clock for a distraction and didn't hear anything, but saw the mass hordes start moving to it. Same with fire and stuff, just generally unfinished.

B32 is a good direction with the craftable stuff. When the new animations come in, like running over fences, stealthing under waist size fences, running with momentum, peaking/leaning, I feel it's going to greatly help stealth.

So It's been almost a year, but the new animator is almost done and it looks fucking amazing.

This is gonna be a huge update, which is going to include all the new clothing options as well as inherent gameplay changes with the way zombies/people move around the world now.

really wish this game was more popular, I think it's one of the best games on the market in terms of survival games.

I bought this on steam some time ago, played it for some time, and been itching to get bakc to it.

Anyone want to play this online? I want to do a long term survival run sometime.

I finally started playing this after having it sit forever in my Steam backlog. I'm very intrigued. This is probably the closest a game has come to replicating that classic Romero zombie feel I got from Zombie Panic Source, with the barricading of buildings and all.

Been replaying this on short bursts, its really, really good. The atmosphere its still unmatched, I think, with the way lines of sights work, and the crafting and doomed nature of the progression. I hope those guys are rewarded for so much work put into this.

So tempted to get this game just took a look at it again and it's gotten so far and apparently they are going to do something special with the human NPC? tempted to buy it but i feel something new might come out soon.

Big ol necro post, but does anyone play this? i have played it on and off since in came out, and then with the multiplayer a mate and i started playing it for a few months every year or so. Still adding to the game and its great but it feels like they will never be happy enough to bring out the full release

Yeah I have no idea what they're doing other than adding tacked on features since their much-touted animation update has been in various stages of almost done for a couple of years now, but their behavior and insular community that sticks around tells me what'll happen is that they'll put out a wet fart of a "1.0" release after Lemmy has one final public meltdown. He'll go on a press tour with the usual suspects like Kotaku and Polygon decrying "those entitled gamers wanting what I advertised when they were sold the game" and the game will fade away.

The game itself hasn't changed substantially in years, with the most impactful mechanics and content added by mods rather than Indie Stone and I'm not confident in the slightest that they will deliver on what they promised.
