PS1 games worth hunting down.

racing lagoon
transport tycoon 3d
the last report
incredible crisis
need for speed 1

...to name a few

I'm just going to post my collection, outside the ones you already have.

Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together - best SRPG ever. Ten controllable characters per field, tons of classes and customization options, relatively tough battles, good (albiet SNES) music and story. The old school interface can be a little irritating, but the depth the battles have to offer will quickly make you forget.

Absurdly hard to get though. ebay is basically all you've got.

Klonoa: Door to Phantomile - Also absurdly hard to get your hands on....I don't think it's as standout as TO in its genre (there are better platfromers out there), but it's still a fantastic game, and I don't regret splurging on ebay at all.

Alundra - ARPG with excellent puzzles. Best puzzles this side of Lufia 2, probably. Solid, rather than standout in most non-puzzle aspects...but still...Worth tracking down.

Grandia - Long game, fun battles, pretty....

Dragon Quest 7 - Recommended if a 70+ hour marathon of messing around with a class sytem and repetitive, episodic scenarios is your idea of fun (....worked for me)

Silhouette Mirage - Good fun despite WD dicking around with it. Off the wall gameplay mechanis, crazy bosses...Still my second favorite Treasure game, after Mischief Makers

Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen - honestly, this is a really good game...but I'm not sure if it's worth the effort. Then again, who knows if/when another installment will come...

Incredible Crisis - before there was Wario Ware, there was....

Brave Fencer Musashi - This one I actually don't think is that hard to get. It has not aged even close to well, but it's a fun game. Lots of different abilities to play around with. More of an action and even platforming focused ARPG.

Tles of Destiny 2 - Not sure how familiar you are with the series. If you're into a twitcher RPG (not as good a combining stategy and reflex/timing as VP, but still does a good job). One of the features I really like about the game is the Craymel Cage system, where you splice your magical power provider guys back and forth to get new powers (that's a terrible explanation...whatever, the game is cool)

Metal Slug X - yeah....

Castlevania: SotN - right...

You already have the most important game (VP), after that, I'd go for TO:LUCT if you're willing to spend money, Alundra if not...

Been assembling this thing for a while, still haven't gotten Persona 2, even though that seems like a no-brainer for my tastes. Other than that I'm really happy with this little crew though! Hooray for PS1! Soon enough be running back for all those PS2 games I've managed to overlook....

My Collection consists of:

Castlevania: SOTN
Silent Hill
Final Fantasy Tactics
Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy VIII
Final Fantasy IX
Resident Evil: Directors Cut
Resident Evil 2
Metal Gear Solid
Chrono Cross
NHL 98
Breath of Fire 3
Breath of Fire 4

Castlevania Chronicles is worth getting too. It's essentially a remake of the original Castlevania. Not as good as Super Castlevania 4 or Dracula X Rondo of Blood, but still a fine example of old school 2D action.

The question is, where the hell are you going to FIND these games in order to buy them? It's like every peice of playstation software fell off the face of the earth the day PS2 got released or something. I can't find shit!

Some of my faves:

Ape Escape
Crash Bandicoot
Crash Bandicoot: 2: Cortex Strikes Back
Crash Bandicoot: Warped
Fear Effect
Omega Boost
Parasite Eve
Wipeout XL, Wipeout 3

Good luck, and enjoy!

Many thanks for the recommendations, I got my PSX the monday after the US Dreamcast launch and while I managed to get a few of the frequently mentioned standouts, I've been wanting to fill it out a little more. Heh, seeing as I bought my PStwo just this februrary, maybe I'll break the trend next gen. ;)

Also, sorry, I was just listing some of the more prominent ones that others hadn't already recommended. My PS1 collection in full:

Bushido Blade
Bushido Blade 2
Chrono Cross
Dragon Warrior VII
Driver
Final Fantasy Anthology
Final Fantasy Chronicles
Final Fantasy Tactics
Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy VIII
Final Fantasy IX
Gran Turismo 2
Grandia
Mega Man X4
Tekken 2
Vagrant Story
Valkyrie Profile
Warhawk
Wipeout XL
Wipeout 3
[take note that my PS2 collection looks much different*]

Hit the local gameshops in the S-SE part of town today, and while I found Tron Bonne, Megaman Legends, and other titles... all were in Average-Poor condition(heh, gamestop likes to keep the discs in the jewel case and tape them shut on the end, so I can just pop open the hinges to have a look). One copy of Einhander had the telltale signs of Disc Doctor resurfacing, and I didn't feel like paying $30 for it. I'll probably hit the W-SW part tomorrow.

* Currently BOF DQ, Disgaea, Gradius V, GGXX, La Pucelle ($2), Megaman AC, MMX8, MGS3, Phantom Brave SE, Sonic Mega Coll., SC2, SFAC, VF4:E, Wipeout Fusion, ZOE2. Only GGXX wasn't bought new, good condition though.

Heh, sometimes you just get lucky.

Amen. One of my favorite games ever. Once you've played it, it becomes apparent that it has inspired nearly every SRPG since.

Another overlooked gem. About as fast-paced and frantic as action games get.

I second Brave Fencer Musashi. Great game in almost every regard. Graphics are a bit dated, but done with enough style that the game looks damn good. Amazing soundtrack, great bosses, decent story (albeit bad voice acting), and just really fun in general. Hands down one of the best titles on the PSX.

Tempest X
The next best thing to Tempest 2000... and possibly more visually entertaining. If you like Tempest or pretty colors, you need this.

Blast Chamber
OK, not worth hunting down, but if you find it cheap definitely get it. It's clunky, ugly, and imperfect, but one hell of a party game.

Carnage Heart
Build mechs, program them with a Lego Mindstorms-esque graphical procedure creator, and strategize your way to victory. Totally unique.

negCon
A controller, true, but something that must be experienced. Try it with wipEout, Ridge Racer, or Gran Turismo games. Still one of my favorite controllers ever.

Also: Warhawk, Jet Moto (only the first), Twisted Metal1/2. And dozens upon dozens of others.

As a probably needless update, I just finished getting all of my bday game buying binge. Managed to find the following:

Alundra, very good condition used.
Bushido Blade 2, like-new condition used. (*shrug*)
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, new.
Einhander, like-new condition used.
Metal Slug X, new.
R-Type Delta, like-new condition used.

And along the way:
Dark Cloud 2, new.
Crusader: No Regret, decent condition used. (Shameful as it is, I never owned my own copy)

Think it's hard to find on PSX? I tracked down an SNES version from a local pawn shop. :D

imo unplayable due to the digicross and the eight directions of the crusader. diablo for example is way better for that kind of game.

And if I told you I'm a huge fan of both Crusader games(on PC), I'd imagine you'd guess how I'd respond to that. :P

Good thread.

I have Klonoa($18 @ EB) and VP.
They are re-releasing Klonoa in a compilation set very soon.

Also be sure to pick up Thrill Kill and import Tobal #2.

Colony Wars (3 games but the first is the best IMO), WarHawk and Ace Combat 3 Jpn Version.

These three are very rare and very good. If you like shooters you should track em down.

WarHawk is rare? I just got a used copy off EBgames for $1.99 :lol

Didn't they strip down the console versions? I know warez is frowned upon but IMO, you should hunt for the PC version in bargin bins and barring finding a legit copy, grab it from the net.

Ok, I kinda assumed that "And along the way" followed by "Dark Cloud 2" would signal that I was no longer talking about PS1 games. My mistake.

I'm not so big on gaming in general anymore to know that Dark Cloud 2 isn't a PSX title. *shrug*

Haha, that's ok. I'm actually more miffed at the thought that anyone would consider me buying anything other than the PC versions. ;)
