PS2 & 16:9 Games

Hmmm...Does the 16:9 option in the bios menu do anything or it just deppends on in-game settings ?
I ask this because there are games that yes, look incredibly distorted but there are others which don't have 16:9 in Options but look pretty good in 16:9 mode.

The 16:9 menu in the bios has no bearing on games whatsoever. I think it's for DVD's actually so unless a game has 16:9 in the options, it doesn't support widescreen.

Keep in mind that many widescreen PS2 games don't send the signal that auto-triggers widescreen mode in TV's.

For instance, I have to force my TV into "16:9 enhanced mode" for the PS2 version of SSX3 and Ratchet & Clank 3, whereas the Xbox almost always automatically kicks that mode in once I set it 16:9 in the console's menu.

Finally, a lot of PS2 games only have the actual game itself in widescreen mode, not the in-game menus. SSX is like that.

Yeah. Gauntlet SS is one of those. There is no "proper" 16:9 option in the option menu, but yet it looks good on my widescreen display (and looks vertically streached if I choose "4:3" rather than "Wide" on my TV). I dont really know which games do this thing 'cos I bought my 16:9 (HD)TV just recently.

Burnout Revenge looks stellar in 16:9. I assume it's true 16:9 whereas most games are not. At least in my experience.

I do like what M$ is doing in regards to all games being 16:9. Sony should make devs adhere to particular standards. Or at least give us all kinds of ingame display and perfomance options like you're given on a PC.

My one wish to have all games come with the option to run at 60fp (solid) with graphical trade-offs (if need be).

Just give us the option!

*ahem*

Aren't wide-screen games in general like that?

Actually, isn't BR only 480p, not widescreen?

There isn't any 16:9 option but it looks awesome on my 16:9 HDTV...dunno why...hdtvgames lists both versions (PS2/XBOX) as 16:9 compatible.

Nah, many Xbox games like True Crime and Panzer Dragoon Orta aren't. I mentioned SSX because it looks really weird if you switch it into widescreen before the game starts (characters are squashed in the selection screen, etc.).

That is not true. Some games read that setting and display 16:9 mode accordingly. Burnout Revenge is one such game. I'm pretty sure Burnout 3 does this too, and I'm also pretty sure there are few more but I can't remember which exactly.

Read above :)

The setting is indeed there to read, but it's not enforced in the TRCs. Many devs don't even know about it. Mind you, how many anamorphic games are there?

Speaking of is there a definitive list of 16:9 games for the PS2. I use the one at HDTVArcade.com, but that list is behind the times.

There ARE games that use the 16:9 setting in the menu. And there's no magical signal that tells a TV whether or not the content is 4:3 or 16:9. Your TV probably assumes 480p content is 16:9. Most Xbox games are 480p and most PS2 games are 480i, which is why your TV goes into 16:9 for Xbox and not PS2.

In Europe there is. It's on pin 8 of the SCART connector.
