PS2 Gets Portable LCD Treatment (first screen for NEW PS2)

Went to the site, but didn't find any pictures yet.

Pelican today announced its portable GameGlass monitor for the new, slimmed down PS2 model.

Designed specifically for Sony's new PS2, the sleek high-resolution 7" TFT-LCD screen easily fits onto the console and it comes equipped with speakers, two headphone output jacks as well as volume and brightness control.

"The GameGlass turns the new PS2 into more than just a gaming platform," stated Pelican Product Manager, Peter Gould. "It turns it into a complete entertainment system for games, movies and music. The GameGlass allows you to enjoy your new PS2 to its fullest capacity anywhere you go."

The GameGlass will be available at retail sometime next month for a suggested retail price of $139.

We know already:

IIRC, Pelican was the first 3rd party to make a PSone LCD screen before anyone else including Sony. And it was hella crap.

Hopefully Sony makes a decent PStwo LCD. I'm still miffed Nintendo never followed through on their GC LCD for LAN games. :(

Are the 3rd party GC LCD screens any good? Never checked them out.

It will more than likley suck like all 3rd party LCD monitors.

I think someone on GAF recently used the PS LCD screen for the GC and it didn't look bad at all..

Yeah, you can hook pretty much anything that uses standard a/v cables to the psone screen. Doesn't look bad at all...

I don't remember Pelican making the first 3rd party PSone screen, but it's a been a while. I did buy whichever screen came first, and it worked well; the Sony screen was bigger and the screen quality was a bit better, but things will probably be different this time around. I don't think Sony will make their own screen, as they could see it as cutting into PSP sales.

I'm definitely interested in this new PS2 screen and will definitely buy it should the quality turn out well. I have different uses in mind for a somewhat portable PS2 than I do for my PSP. :)

The ORIGINAL Intec screen (not the one that was from Innovation, it sucks bad) works great on the GC. It even shares the same power source, so you only need to use on AC adaptor, and it comes with a car adaptor.

IGN had a review on it before their archive got all screwed up. Let me see if I can still find it but in the mean time, CVXFREAK(heh, I didn't know he made a FAQ for this) did a faq on the PSone LCD screens:

http://faqs.ign.com/articles/378/378697p1.html

His FAQ covers the official Sony one, Interact's Mobile Monitor, and Pelican's LCD. Pick of Pelican's PSone LCD:

Unless Pelican has improved from their previous efforts, take caution :)

I had something else. Perhaps it was an Intec screen, but I KNOW it was one of the first available.

The Intec GC monitor is pretty good for what it is. It connects to the AV output, so you get color bleeding (especially on reds) and the resolution is below the GC's 640x480 so you will . i got it for the sole purpose of having something to play my games on when i moved (no tv), and for games with large characters like Animal Crossing or Bloody Roar, it works well.

I just picked up the Pelican Game Glass this afternoon. Figured I'd be the guinea pig since no one else seems to have purchased it and there's no reviews that I could find anywhere.

Not as bad as you'd think, but definitely room for improvement. I'm definitely satisfied with the screen itself, however, and it has an option for both 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratio. Resolution could stand to be better (I think the screen coming out in the UK next month has a higher resolution), but there's little to no ghosting; all the games I tried looked very good, but sometimes text wasn't as sharp as it could have been. I also want to add that the PSP's screen has spoiled the hell out of me and that none of these mobile monitors are ever going to look as good as it does. :)

Review to follow. Hopefully my camera will be able to show the screen quality (and the issues with it) well enough.

I wonder why Nintendo never released the LCD for the Gamecube. I remember everyone at E3 2003 gushing over it and it made sense with the relative size of the GC.

I agree. I had to return the thing because it showed poor workmanship.

Is that a dead pixel on the right of the car, or is it just the pic?

Yeah, I remember the Pelican PSOne screen. This is better. DEFINITELY room for improvement, but a lot better than the PSOne screen was.

If the UK screen coming out is noticeably better, I won't hesitate to sell this screen off and import that instead.

Thanks for the impressions Lyte and please post some pics, we need to know the truth! Seriously, I wish Sony would just release a damn official screen already. Playstation Portible indeed! :D

He said in another topic he posted that pic in that it is a dead pixel - but a dead pixel IN THE CAMERA, not on the PSP.

I'm going to make a new thread reviewing the screen once I've had the chance to mess around with it some more and try some more games. Also need to try out some DVDs and see how the picture looks. I'd probably rate the screen around 7.5/10 right now, but the thing is, there's no other PS2 screens to compare it to, so it's tough to score seeing as it's the only screen available. :)

I think Sony planned (or still plans) to release a screen of their own, since the Pelican screen fits snugly into the PS2 thanks to the two small holes on either side of the system and screws into them, just like with the PSOne and its screens. Sony probably isn't going to be releasing a screen now as they'd rather have people buy PSP systems instead; I suppose the PS2 screen could be seen as "competition" for the PSP, even though the PS2 is far from portable in comparison.

Great to hear and please post a link to your review in here when its ready Lte Edge.

If I wasn't getting a new laptop soon I would consider buying a new PS TWO and this screen and take it to work. But a laptop in my opinion is a much better "console" :)
