PS3 question (sorry if old)

I haven't read up much on PS3, but I was curious to know something regarding memory cards, if they've made any sort of announcement or whatever:

will these be able to save PS2/PS1 games, or is it just technically not possible to make older games recognize the newer memory card?

I believe they're going with standard memory sticks for PS3, like the PSP. You'll definitely be able to save PS1/PS2 data but you wont be able to transfer old data from your current memory cards. At least not without a 3rd party solution.

That'd be fine with me. I just notice that most places that sell ps1 games don't tend to sell the memory cards any more, so it seems they'd be even harder to find a few years from now. Kind of hard to get people into the "classics" when they can't save the game, you know?

The irony is that one of the main reasons behind the backwards compatibility thing was not just to allow people to play old games on a new system, but also to allow low-budget project to be greenlighted on a dieing system. ie: why make a new mahjong game for PS3 when you can easly do that for PSone using your old SDK, paying less royalty fees and targeting a wider market?
