This might have been posted before as it is basically E3 news but here it is(thanks to Impreza it IGN PS3 for posting this quote):

PlayStation 3's hardware has gotten a little more detailed. The main CELL processor included will run at 3.2GHz, and feature 7 SPEs. The nVidia GPU will run at 550MHz, and there will be two 256MB RAM sticks included, for a total of 512MB. PS3 will have robust multimedia support, including: video chat, internet access, digital photo viewing, digital audio and video playback.

It's just been confirmed that the PS3 will have a detachable hard drive, six USB ports, a memory stick slot, and seven bluetooth wireless controllers.

Kaz Hirai has taken the stage, beginning his speech with "190 million PS2s sold. 2 billion software sales" Hirai then began speaking about PlayStation 3... It features the CELL processor as previously reported, and also features a Blu-Ray Disk drive, running at 6x. Backwards compatibility with both PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games has also just been confirmed. Hirai also stated that PlayStation 3 runs at twice the speed of Xbox 360...

A 6x Blu-ray drive would be 6x36.0Mbps = 216Mbps

The Data transfer rate (1x) = 36.0Mbps
The Data transfer rate (movie application)= 54.0Mbps (1.5x)

Blu-ray actually wasn't clear about this until recently.

The DVD data transfer rate (1x) = 11.08Mbps
So a 6x Bluray drive is equal to a 19.49x DVD drive.

Again, we will prob have to wait until CES for a confirmation for final hardware.

again , rumour has it that these specs still aren't locked down.

as for 6x speeds - after the 12x speed dvd burner farce for the PSX, i'm actually gonna wait until someone actually confirms this who doesn't work at Sony! ;)

I'll guess it's actually 6x the speed of a DVD drive.

It's a bad transcription of what was said at the E3 press conference. As sangreal points out, they were referring to capacity, not drive speed.

No, it's actually pretty dead on. 100 million PS1 and 90 million PS2's already.

woah o_o

Thats cool then. Almost 200million Playstation consoles sold....thats a crazy number

SolidSnakex said:
Probably means PSone's and PS2's sold, since that is around the number that they have sold of them.

Should be over 200 million? Is this news old? As in e3 old?

I know the PSone is over 100m, i'm not sure about the PS2. But I think its atleast in the 80's now. It's expect to get intot he 120m range.

PS3 "Retard Pack', anyone? :lol :lol

Probably gonna happen :lol

Although, the 360 retard pack wasn't retard the pack just because there was no HDD. It was also because it didn't have a wireless controller and some other essential items that would cost an arm and a leg if you bought it seperatley.

Sony recent said it has shipped 100 million PS2s. I'd imagine that at least around ~95 million PS2s have been sold, of course, many are replacements.

"PS3 "Retard Pack', anyone?"

nope - it'll just be used for a different set of applications/functions rather than being required for games (at all)

it's a (truly) optional extra this time (i think!)

Hirai also stated that PlayStation 3 runs at twice the speed of Xbox 360...

I think we have the sucsessor to the toy story comment. PS3 games have to look 2x as good as 360 games now ?

Microsoft made the Toy Story comment, its theres to succeed :P

And uh, obviously its PR, not every game is going to look better let alone 2x better. But if they deliver KZ (which MS said would take to PS4)....

Woo-hoo, we are getting a hard drive. No more stupid memory cards........
Its sold seperately.
And it hasn't been confirmed you can save to it. Hasn't been confirmed to do anything, actually.
Only thing we know is games won't utilise it.

(unless I missed something)

Christ!

Sony never said that! Let the myth die, for the good of a GAF tommorrow!

Also if Blu-Ray was actually a 6x speed for PS3, then yeah I'm gonna start having to bet on the PS3 being 500 bucks.

Why? What's so hard about making it 6x? off the bat?

Doesn't the speed just refer to the rotationary spin?

The amount of data that can be processed at 6x isn't exceptionally extravagant; it's relatively common place to get that kinda transfer speed with high end DVD-roms anyway isn't it? what is it? 300mbps at most? The spin mechanism isn't that super.

They just need to make sure the laser is reliable enough to support those speeds and that the error checking mechanism is also as reliable.

I don't see why that would kick up the price 100 bucks.

DVD didn't just hit 16x burning speed out of the gate. It takes time to get that. Different dyes on discs and such. The Pioneer DVD-A03 came out in 2001 and it's burn speed was 4x. The Pioneer DVD-A08 came it out in 2004 and was their first burner to reach 16x. As you can see, it takes a while to get there

I wasn't implying that the 6x would be the catalyst for it being 100 bucks more, I was just saying that every piece of the technology at this point would be so ridiculously high end that it'd probably indicate that Sony is going for the more expensive priceline.

But yeah, it's not that it's "Hard" to make it 6x... it's that it's "hard" to make it CHEAP enough for a videogame system that's supposed to have mass appeal.

Watching the Sony conference it's clear that Kutaragi (and the slideshow) refers to 6x the capacity of a DVD (not speed). It's not so clear reading just the spec sheet ;)

As stated by the original poster, this is "news" from E3 time. The specs here are what were announced at E3.
