PS5s 3D Audio (Tempest Engine) Could be a game changer!

A Sheep
Watching Cerny talk about this peaked my interest but it sounded to good to be true!?
so I did a little research and found this demonstration on YouTube. It kind of works with earbuds but when you try it with over the ear headphones (audio-technica ATH-M50) it's pretty damn impressive!!
You can hear sounds in front to the sides and behind you and even at different levels up and down!
To me this is as important as the photo realistic graphics that are coming.

The demo really doesn't start until they tell you to put on headphones🎧
I would be interested to see what everyone thinks..

The biggest game changer to me will be if they remove the optical port like MS did. That would mean I need to buy either a new TV or receiver to get surround sound.

Surround sound is something of a dream, I don't think it's possible to engineer it to the casuals you got the TV sound speaker and it ends there. I like the massive speakers but headphones are also ok.

Well I'm assuming there isn't too many casual gamers on this site? And this is supposed to work with regular tv stereo speakers also. Sound is almost 50% of the game for me!
I have a 5.1 surround system and most games support that.

... and could not be. In any case, I would like to see more games where the sound is part of the gameplay.

Has anything described as a potential game changer ever changed the game? 🤔

You can try out Windows Sonic or Dolby Atmos right now today and see how it works in games.

I know they have Dolby Atmos on the one x Awesome by the way but this is done with regular over the ear headphones. $100 or less.

I use Dolby Atmos with over-ear headphones on pc and can hear exactly which direction sounds are coming from, no problems.

Oh, look, another one of these threads.

I'm super excited for a next gen leap in audio, as a PSVR user the audio is one of the first things I noticed. I'd be interested to know if any devs will use the power of the chip for general game computation since Cerny said that it's possible.

There's no doubt that the audio in the next-gen will be awesome. Especially if you have a decent setup at home or a great pair of headphones. I've got neither, since I'm too cheap to buy expensive headphones and the WAF is very low when it comes to hifi. Sony is promising big advances, even with only a soundbar, so I'm interested to experience that later on.

It did sound great! It just seems the location of the surround was more pinpoint and seams to project higher in virtual space on the demo I shared.?

Yeah, that's very possible since it's two different demos. Essentially, Sony's version is doing the same thing as Atmos. Both can project 100s of sounds different locations. It's an awesome feature and definitely great news for the ps5!

Cant wait! Thanks for the info!

Tempest 3D audio is obviously vastly superior to DA or XBX audio solution, I mean, I can already hear all the fanboys' excuses and spins like they are right here with me in my room, and all of that from my muted smartphone! #gamechanger

Thanks for the laugh... Are you from the future? You said Tempest 3D Audio is suprior in every aspect compared to Dolby and Xbox 3D Audio, without Sony showing any real examples like playing a game with it enabled and disabled.

B.. but you can send ear nudes to Sony to make custom adjustments :messenger_crying:, thats a killer feature right there.

The demo in the OP is Virtual surround sound which is only a subset of what 3D audio is capable of and not really Tempest is about at all.

Tempest is more about binaural audio.

Take a look at this BBC report for a quick primer:

That first video with the guy talking and making noises around your head was so cool!! This is what I'm wanting in games!! Can't wait!

Q- What do you think of Sony's mission to bring 3D audio to everyone?
Sony's mission to bring 3D audio to everyone on PS5 is exciting, it reminds us of when we began the Dolby Atmos for games journey many years ago. There are now hundreds of millions of Dolby Atmos enabled products in the market, across several product categories (TV, AVR, soundbar, mobile phone, pc, game console, headsets). Dolby Atmos is also available at a wide range of prices – even as low as $15.

Q- Sony announced a deep focus on 3D audio. How does that impact Dolby?
We are thrilled that Sony is dedicated to using 3D audio in its new console. This can only be interpreted as a validation of the work we have done across all entertainment genres in implementing Dolby Atmos on the devices consumers use today. We will continue forward with our mission to ensure Dolby Atmos is supported as the standard in 3D audio on all endpoints.

Come on... a bit more effort on justifying PS5 not using Dolby Atmos, please?

This reminds me of a "battle" there was some decades ago: surround sound. There were 3 competing "standards": Dolby Digital 5.1, DTS 5.1 and SDDS (by Sony). Guess what are the 2 most used audio standards even today for surround sound.

I'll give you a clue: is not SDDS. Same will happen to Tempest ;)

This isn't a format battle though. It's likely Tempest is being used mainly for VR applications and PlayStation consoles. Completely different use cases. It's not really a drop-in replacement for Dolby Atmos even though certain aspects are similar.

Well, is not you. There are many studies which say that sound is even more important for a movie or game than the visual, in the sense that sound generates more reactions in the human body, and creates a more lasting impact in a cinematic/gaming experience. In my case i always make sure, if im watching a good movie, to have a good sound system, and most of the time nobody cares but i do.

Ive been using my 5.1 surround for gaming for years and I really didn't know this technology existed ! Xbox either didn't use it much or didn't sell the benefits because I would have bought a one x if I ever heard a demo of it.

They announced it but nobody was making a big deal about it.
