PSM tidbits - online, final hardware delivered

I don't know how truthful it is (anybody got the mag to confirm?) but here goes http://forums.e-mpire.com/showthread.php?t=51494

"President of Sony has made it clear that his company has an amibitious new online strategy."

"Cast aside any doubts and start gazing toward skyward, because thats where Sony is aiming with plans that go far beyond simple leaderboards and matchmaking."

"Sony has just delivered the final development hardware to U.S. game developers. We can confirm that developers have already begun meetings with Sony's support teams to make sure their games are compatible with the yet unnamed Online Service."

"Its very real, one source tells us. They (Sony) are dead serious about it. They've declared a full on assault on the latest version of Xbox Live!"

"The online service is being designed to also work with the PSP and its games. Think one, BIG Playstation network!"

Discuss. :D

I can hear the stomping already!

But I hope they have a great online system. Online gaming has become one of the biggest factors in my purchasing decisions.

:lol

i love articles like this. it reminds me of things like X-perts being genesis' "Donkey Kong Country" where you will likely look back on it in a few years and laugh. i'm not saying sony doesn't have an online plan in place, just commenting on the "OUR source says..." well wtf does that mean?

go far beyond simple leaderboards and matchmaking.

far beyond? like what? downloadable trailers and game demos right from your console? a catalog of old and new arcade games available for purchase? downloadable content? please let us know!

anyhow, hopefully this is true because i have about had it with the shitty online performance on playstation 2. i hope sony duplicates the new XBL, where you are signed in automatically and all games have achievements and stuff.

i also hope its broadband only.

Well, a couple of the things they've announced already go beyond what you can get on Live currently (web browsing, video chat..).

Having PSP potentially allows them to do a lot more too than they could without a handheld (PS3<->PSP communication etc.).

There's a whole tonne of potential there. How they execute is another matter, of course..

The only thing they could best MS with their online service, I believe, is by providing hosting services for games, which is something Xbox Live is quite poor at.

Other than that, I guess there's online video conferencing (which MS will introduce this year, supposedly.)

I definitely look forward to whatever they bring to the table, if it in fact challenges the Xbox Live platform.

Downloadable game demos have been confirmed for PSP. I'm sure the same thing will happen with PS3. Game publishers want those demos in as many hands as possible. Having a service directly downloading content to the consumer homes is a big plus.

We'll see what happens at E3, and what Sony offers. Online is MS trump card. If Sony offers a comparable service to Live, but for free, it'll be interesting to see how they respond. I love Live, but if Sony gives me the same goods at no extra cost, I have no problems jumping ship. I would pay for Sony's online plan if it were similar, but if they don't want to charge me for it then I would consider this a competitive advantage, and gravitate towards buying more PS3 games.

Most powerful hardware + similar online plan - yearly cost = winner

Probably a given. Thats really the biggest difference between PS2 and PS3 online. Broadband jack out of the box (3 of them in fact, lol), so no split userbase. Not to mention a CPU in Cell that pretty much screams for all sorts of networking application.

I'll believe it when I see it.

*hopes*

Same, and if they keep it free (for all games except MMORPG's of course) I'm going to be very very happy. Now fix teh controller and you've got the best overall Next-gen system.

its sounds iffy, but logically, it would be stupid for sony to notice the sucess of x-live and not want to emulate. i would like to see the article this came from though, cuz psm is one of the few magazines that i dont read

so basically non-gaming related features?

the ps3 ---> psp connection sounds cool and that is infact a potentially awesome feature. there is always a lot of potential with online systems, but the bread and butter is, infact, going to be head to head connections and playing online with others, not video conferencing or web browsing

that PSM article might be very old, like September-October

Shouldn't be that old if you can trust that statement. They didn't have final devkits in like September-October.

Sony likes to talk big...that's pretty much it. Do people quickly forget all the promises that came around the HDD launch...and then how quickly the thing tanked?

Well one of the arguments I've seen about Live is how all these non-core features gel together to enhance the overall experience. Surely, it is nice to communicate how you like with other gamers you're playing with, or to pop into gaf mid-game :P Besides the plethora of other features one might consider to be "icing".

But of course, the most important part is a stable and responsive system at the heart of every game.

PSP is a more recent experience for most, and its online-related functionality is a lot lot better than PS2's and is usually introduced with very little fanfare actually.

Keep the boomerang!

I won't pass judgement on it until I use it.

Sony has also kept quiet on one more function about the PS3 controller. Phill Harrison has mentioned this in a past interview. We probably won't hear about it till E3.

But if Sony does have a similar service to Live implemented with the PS3, could be the ultimate system.

Most powerful hardware + best software support (Given due to PS2 success) + online plan comparable to Live + Blu Ray hi def movies and for games + full backwards compatibility with PS2 & PSone = crazy delicious

We need May to hurry up and get here! :D

Video chat can be used while you play a game (if you have two screens), if Masa Chatani is to be believed. :)

Likewise you can video chat with your friends at the same time as playing a game. This is not simply to display of the same game, but allowing the user to common and control multiple sources of, multiple channels of entertainment simultaneously.
From E3.

Edit: Chatani not Chitani.

Nice to hear Gofreak, that makes it even better. :)

You won't need two screens. You can pop it open in a sub-screen OR use a second screen if you wish, Chatani actually said this explicitly in a post-E3 interview.

The same is undoubtedly true for any functionality that can be put onto the second screen.

Nah, Devs just got the final interation of the PS3 Dev Kits (arrived a little less than a month late).

It's a brand new PSM snippet, by the way.

They usually are pretty accurate too, albeit from the vagueness of their statements.

An eight year old version of Gamespy has more options for finding the games and people you want to play than LIVE, and probably Sony's upcomming online service. Less fluff, better server listings please.

Yup, plus more PC-friendly hardware means more FPS's on the console (the biggest weakpoint in PS's library). Sony's really going all out next-gen.

"Its very real, one source tells us. They (Sony) are dead serious about it. They've declared a full on assault on the latest version of Xbox Live!"

the fuck it is.

We would've heard about it before now because some Sony rep would've spilled the beans. I'll be hard pressed if an NDA doesn't get broken if this is to be "big news".

And no this is not just a blunt Xbot talking, Sony "tried" to promise us this lie on the PS2. Anyone remember?

Wasn't PSM the mag whose "sources" told them the PS3 Killzone trailer was realtime running at 5 fps?

Yeah I think that was the same mag.

However they were spot on regarding MGS4. :)

One source has described the game to PSM as "a cross between Rambo and Black Hawk Down," with Solid Snake plunged into the middle of a high-intensity urban war zone where artillery is taking out cover all around him and AI controlled "sidekicks" fight alongside him as if they were actual human-controlled characters. The new 3D camera will play a big role in surviving the fight quarters and constantly changing cover.

Metal Gear Solid 4 will be shown to the public for the first time at TGS, starting Friday.
