PSM tidbits - online, final hardware delivered

the less sony says the better it is for them

"They have an online service" will soon become 'they have an online service better than XBL and it's free!"

Good luck to sony with it. A good online service will be awesome, and if they can stop us getting raped on online gaming costs here in Japan (880 yen for Dirge! MH2 just announced at 980 yen...) seems like the standard charge PER GAME is around $8 PER MONTH.... i cannot see this pricing stop for us.

the fuck it is.

We would've heard about it before now because some Sony rep would've spilled the beans. I'll be hard pressed if an NDA doesn't get broken if this is to be "big news".

And no this is not just a blunt Xbot talking, Sony "tried" to promise us this lie on the PS2. Anyone remember?

Hell yeah and that's a bigass ghost too. Give us the info Sony!!!!

if SonyOnline is free, the service will be shitty. i'm not exactly swimming in cash in my life, but i'd prefer to pay $5 a month and have a decent online structure rather than have the shitty features that would accompany a free service.

I don't know why this wouldn't be true. I think online can be a big selling point in America and Europe and Sony would be foolish to not provide Live any competition.

Make it free and they'll kick Xbox Live down several notches.

As long as they're going for a nice unified service, it'll be far better than the current situation where your identity is different for each game.

It's nice to see some confirmation, even if it is PSM.

I was beginning to think Sony was serious about still laying it all at the laps of developers again.

I like having a different identity for each game.

The first console maker that lets you use a pc or a console as a dedicated server gets my vote for best online service. A well run server takes away all the cheaters and assholes from the experience.

If you buy an import PS2 w/modem from the US and plug it in, can't you play the games online for free? Seems cheaper in the long run :P

I agree with this. I wish a journalist would press MS on this topic for once in an interview. It has never been brought up.

If it's true, then it's something else to thank Microsoft for. :D

While I agree Microsoft certainly laid the foundation for console online-gaming, what else to we have to thank them for*?

*you best not be talking about HDDs ...

It's not really surprising. I mean you can't be that delusional to truly believe Sony's going to sit on their hands all through next gen while MS has a market (online) all to themself.

of course Sony has an online plan. I doubt it will be like Live though.

I don't think Sony will charge for their online service. And I don't think they will copy too many features of Live (stuff like Arcade which is the real online killer app).

I'm sure you'll be able to download games and stuff like this.

You won't need two screens. You can pop it open in a sub-screen OR use a second screen if you wish, Chatani actually said this explicitly in a post-E3 interview.

The same is undoubtedly true for any functionality that can be put onto the second screen.

Or, link in a PSP ... although that's pretty silly.

I fully expect Sony's online plan to be a one-two punch of Nintendo's and MS'. You can download FFVII, Valkyrie Profile, or Xenogears to your personal online storage cache (and then to your HDD--speeds vary depending on your Internet connection) for the nominal fee of $9.99-$19.99!

Interesting how everyone thinks that Sony is challenging Microsoft's domain on their own, or that they actually intended to do this from the beginning.

I don't believe it, simply because this whole thing stinks. Sony isn't acting like Sony, which means its more likely this is being blown out of proportion.

Oh I believe there will be an online plan. They should have one. I just think it will be on a very, very, very tiny scale that really no one will care about.

Sony isn't acting Sony like? In what way? They're being quiet while others continue hyping their system. That is Sony.

This is going to be in some GAF posters futures, who's though? That's the question? :D

If you've ever followed Sony hardware you know that alot of the times they don't say shit, they just sit back and let other people hype it. And then they'll start hyping it themself.

Wasn't the PS2 supposed to have some big online network? That turned out to be SOCOM, right?

I believe there are a lot of stories and recounts of politics that went untold with the mysteriously disappearing PS2 online plan...

I wonder if maybe Sony's trick would be to build the community, but then hosting would cost money? (Dependent on the game -- many would be free, some would have premium servers, some would be all-pay, as it is now on console.) I'm not sure why I'd guess at that (Sony's whole end-of-line on "freedom for developers" was that publishers could manage their own user accounts and not feel the need to hold out), but it might make some sense. It's what I really want out of PlayStation World, most of all, the ability to find my friends on PS3 or PSP, figure out what they're playing, see if I have it, and then game ... if I have to pay for games I have to pay for and get the community for free, that's fair business to me. Xbox Live is an incredible service, worth the money, but you're not paying for what you think you're paying for.
?

Yeah, aside from Kutaragi - Sony is generally quiet, and simply lets hysteria run its course.

Even then, Kutaragi generally doesn't deal in strategy/plan specifics - just hyperbolic PR.

Can already host on your own in some games, is that what you're talking about? You can set aside a host in SW Battlefront, although I've rarely seen that done.

I'm curious, how well a PS2 would serve as a PS3 game host? It's 32mb of RAM (?) and no HDD, but will game hosting of P2P connections for a set group rely on big hardware? (I honestly don't know, just putting it out there...) Everybody's PS2s will become closet bricks as soon as PS3 ships anyway, it'd be a very small machine to keep on your rack as a host, plus Sony wouldn't have a security problem with talking to the machine since they control it (PCs might make them nervous), the PS2-to-PS3/PSP server software could be released by the company or even by Sony (if they could do a one-game-fits-all solution) on a printed PS2 disc without some homebrew hack and with user-friendly instructions, they could even exchange memory cards or USB if there was anything complicated to setting it up and managing it ... Is there any potential there?

When you run a dedicated server in the pc world, you take a pc and set it up to be the server. You can't play(you can watch) all the server does in host the game. The host has the power to control any aspect of the game(kicks, bans, game rules, maps etc.)I'm hoping with consoles you can either use a second 360 or a pc, and use it as a dedicated server.

If you are wondering why there aren't 32+player online game in consoles I think it is because of the lack of dedicated servers. I used to play 128 person maps in TRIBES years ago. It was a mess but still fun. 64(32 vs 32) player maps were commonplace.

Alot of people will say that no one will buy an extra 360 or pc to run a server, but they are wrong, the same people that run pc servers would love to do the same for console games. They love the control, and i love the fact that someone is controlling, on a well run server you'll have no cheaters or people using glitches for advantage.

While everyone wants a freinds or buddies list, i want a favorite server list. I don't want to play with the same people all the time, i want to play in the best possible enviornment all the time.

Oh and yes i'd guess the ps2 would make a crappy server.

But I hope they have a great online system. Online gaming has become one of the biggest factors in my purchasing decisions.

I, for one, would have loved too have seen that pass. If Ken Kutaragi can make something like this happen with his super PlayStations (or Bill Gates with the Xbox 360?), so much the better.

100% agreed. I think Cell-based servers being leveraged for 1st party online games (SOCOM, Sony's MMOs etc) are a very real possibility in the future, although how they might be integrated in the user community is a big question. Also, if you'll allow some Kutaragi esque "pie in sky" thinking for a moment, IBM has already been testing benchmarks for improving physics performance with Cell-based servers taking care of the bulk of the processing for massively online environments. An all Cell client-server model may open up some new possibilities on cutting down the inherent problems with latency and game world complexity. Again, Cell was built with this kind of networking potential in mind.

I'm hoping, but i don't think there's a chance of user-run dedicated servers with the 360. There's just too much LIVE stuff in the way. I'm hoping the PS3 system isn't so "all encompassing", if you let the devs code the online any way they want there's more of a chance for user-run dedicated servers. I'm sure PC devs would love to use the system they've been using(user-run dedicated servers) for years on consoles.

It's not 100% that a free service would be shit but I feel like you and would rather pay a nominal fee for a quality service than put up with anything like PS2 online again.

I certainly hope this news is true though.

"I cran make tee PSTree Ranytime I wrant!"

So make it already Kutaragi!
I wonder how long after the release of the PS3 we get any online stuff?

But XBL Silver membership on the 360 already renders 90-95% of what was locked behind traditional Xbox Live membership free already. The only thing that you're paying for now is the ability to actually play the games online, which really shouldn't be the case if there isn't a MS hosted server involved for the game sessions.

I believe when i use it.

Sony typical hype downplay other consoles only to sit on their ass for long time before putting something average out.

Read IGN news archive. :)

"only" :lol
Of course you're paying to play online. That's the whole point of the different levels of service.
