EDIT:

I don't want everyone to be scared to talk at all in this thread for fear of being banned, and the moderation on this subject so far is probably confusing a lot of people. Taking that into account, I'm making some revisions here to be clear to the forum populace.

-NO linking to illegal ROMs/ISOs or asking where to get them.

-NO directions on how to get illegal PSP Game ISOs working off the memory stick or otherwise.

Use common sense here, folks. I discourage the loss of game sales through piracy and support the time and effort that game developers put into their projects, so keep that in mind while you have your fun.

Just going to paste a bit from Joshua about homebrew apps from the other thread that I wanted respond to/elaborate upon.

One thing I've used my GBAMP for a lot in the last half year is reading text, and after trying several of the programs I think CN Reader makes a fair replacement. I don't like how it lets words split up between lines, and how some characters like “ and ‘ show up as some sort of Asian characters (no expert here), but a search/replace to turn them into " and ' on the PC basically takes care of that second problem.
I tried CN Reader and another text reader, Aozora, on PSP last night. Definitely prefer CN Reader though I agree with your criticisms, esp. the lack of word wrap. I do like that it lets you control background and text color.

Aozora was odd...it's in an earlier rev state so It'll probably improve but the default method of laying out text in portrait and using the face buttons rather than d-pad for any kind of navigation/functionality was counterintuitive. I actually wouldn't mind the portrait presentation if they allowed you to flip the orientation to use the d-pad and allow for smaller fonts.

Would really like to see a western homebrew coder come up with a text reader, as well.

Would anyone happen to have any links to where I can get some nice background images (the PIC1.png stuff) for the Metal Gear Ac!d save data? I've done a little searching, but everywhere seems to be flooded with new bitmap backgrounds etc. Thanks

That other thread was getting a bit crazy. I think we should have a FAQ & Links stuff at the top of this thread so that new users can get up and running.

I made some background images for myself and people who want them. They're all WoW themed and created using WoW artwork and CG images.

Examples:

10.bmp
06.bmp
05.bmp

You can download all 12 of them here...

I second that idea. I want in on the fun but don't know where to start.

so there were rumors that Coded Arms for the PSP would be the first game to carry the mandator firmware update for the US

Coded Arms just came out in Japan and it looks like it only forces you to update to 1.50. not sure if it'll be the same for the US version...

I saw a post on the least thread about the jpeg viewer released some days ago.

No blurry effect when you scroll dow is great, but do you still have to scroll up to the top of the page each time you browse a new one ?

This was very annoying with the built in browser...

is there supposed to be a new exploit being released that does not require memory stick swapping? i'm not really 'in the know' when it comes to this scene, but would be interested if a more streamlined method for running unsigned code became available for 1.50.

Nop. I'm using it to view manga right now. So much simpler than the built in one.

no swap solution came out yesterday

Semi-related to this thread - when's the PSP keyboard coming out? Wasn't there one announced before? I'm thinking it would be perfect for a future PSP web browser and stuff like that. :)

Yeah dude, the swapless exploit for 1.50's came out yesterday. And we're all lovin' it!

MobileHackerz has a video of the PSP being used with some generic infrared PSP keyboard and some homebrew app, and a couple of people on the ps2dev forums have been playing about with the IRda functions that are built in to the PSP, with some success, but it doesn't seem like there's any solution that will allow keyboard use instead of the onscreen keyboard in all cases on the horizon yet.

So 1.5 seems to be the happy medium now. Easy homebrew/emus and able to play the latest new games. Until they force an upgrade past that I guess.

BTW probably a silly question but I assume if you use PSPersonalize to load your own backgrounds, you can always go back to the preset ones right?

You can ues the same program to replace the new with the original.

Ever since I changed my background pictures, I don't hear the bootup "chime" anymore when I boot up. Replacing the background pictures with the original ones didn't help. Is this a known problem? I'm not talking about the sound you hear when you start a game, It's the sound that you hear when you boot up the machine and the "Sony Computer Entertainment" shows.

Edit: Lol, i fiddled a bit with the settings, and apperently the bootup chime disappears when you disable the button sound. :)

havent been following up the PSP hack scene since the dual swap was discovered.

so...

1. How do I change my PSP background image?

2. How do I do single memory stick now?

So I ran into a bug or glitch with GB emulator Rin... at least I can't figure out how I'd have screwed this up. Somehow it got to where of A, B, rapid A, and rapid B, no matter how I assigned them to PSP buttons, only rapid A would actually do anything. Deleted the config file off the memory stick to set things back to square one and things have been fine since, though.

Assuming one knows a bit about the two-card trick, the one-card trick is very simple. Rather than having the various eboot files in the same directories (PSP\GAMES\HOMEBREWTHING or whatever) of different cards and swapping, you instead put them all on the same card, but what would've gone on the first card will have a % added to the directory (PSP\GAMES\HOMEBREWTHING%). Then just run it from the PSP menu and things will work fine. Ignore that half of the things listed will say they're corrupted, that's just the nature of having two directories to trick it into running one thing.

two questions. first of all, how do the emulators run? specifically genesis, snes, and mame? secondly, what kind of usb cable do i need? i'm at work and neither the official sony psp site nor ign give the specification. thanks for the help fellas!

No, you don't.

This homebrew JPEG viewer is just awesome.

Linking to pirate download sites, directions on how to get pirated software to work, reviews or impressions of pirated software will all result in the banning of the user in question.

After the thread was closed for exactly that sort of thing, as well.

New Mame is out!

PSPMame v0.96 r03 Released

Source: PDRoms

TMK has now ported the 0.96 version of mame to the PSP as PSPMame v0.96 r03. This release comes in 6 editions which are Namco, Sega, Tecmo, Capcom, Irem, and Favo. The files go in PSP\GAME\MAMEPSP, and you put the games in \PSP\GAME\MAMEPSP\ROMS.

Any word on a DIVX program, or are they only working on the emulators at this stage?

Along with the release of PSP Media Center v0.5b, the following was mentioned:

In the works:

– XviD video playback
– .OGG playback refinement
– .AHX tracker format

Oh god yes. Reminder: PSPhoto works great for converting cbrs into psp-compliant jpegs, and it's a dream when comboed with the new viewer. There may be other better jpeg converters but I haven't seen them.

BTW, am I allowed to give my impressions of an emulated title (ie "Gunstar Heroes runs great")?

can someone please explain how to run Emulators - Homebrew on 1.5 PSP ? I already have MSwap Tool, Emulators & ROMS.. I tried so hard but I got nothing..damn I am so sick of it X<

Download an emulator.

Use the swap program and make the output files of the eboot.pbp that came with the emulator (it should put it into an output folder with MS1 and MS2 folders.)

Take MS2 folder and rename it to what you want (IE NES for the NES emulator).

Take MS1 folder and rename it to EXACTLY the same thing only with an % sign at the end. (IE NES%).

Copy both folders into the X:/PSP/GAME dir.

Put roms onto your card somewhere (some emu's require them to be in same folder as emu, but some of the better ones you can place them ANYWHERE on the card and upon first start up you use the internal browser to find the folder they are contained in.

Tada!

PS. ZIP your roms up. Saves you so much room.

WHOAAAA !!! FINALLLLY YEEEEEEEEEEAH !! Sp3eD you are DA BEST !! I will give a free PSP 2 after 5 years :P thanx alot :)

BTW how can I save the game ? also what is the proper method to exit ?
Depends on what exactly you're running. The ones I've used have done something like hitting L, select, or some direction on the analog stick to bring a menu up.

How you save the game is completely emulator dependant.

In the emus that I have tried (NesterJ 1.04 (NES emu), RIN 1.25 (Gameboy/GameboyColor emu), and PCEP 0.7 (TurboGrax16 emu) they all saved automatically at their designated save points. However, the emu's also have a "save state" option at the top of their menu screens that allows you to save anywhere in the game at anytime (5 save slots for every game and even gives you a little thumbnail picture of exactly the spot you saved for easy rememberance)

As for exiting, I always make it a habit to hit the home key and go back to the main menu then turn the system off. However, from talking to others it seems you can also shut the system off in an emulator at anytime without fear of anything going bad.

HOWEVER, DO NOT put your PSP in sleep mode while in any homebrew application. It happened to me and I know it has happened to a bunch of others where something goes wrong when coming back from sleep mode and currupts your memory card (to the point where you have to wipe it with the format stick option from the PSP menu). If you have to leave your game, just save state it and turn the system off. It is not worth having to restructure hundreds of megs of roms back onto the card just to save 10 seconds of time.

You can do this for all current emus? The only one that I know runs ZIPs for sure is Megadrive, and the zipped file had to be of a certain filetype too.

NesterJ 1.04
RIN 1.25
PCEP 0.7
and I think the SNES emu all support .zip files

If you have folders full of .nes or .gb and stuff go into WinRAR. Go to the folder with your unzipped roms. Highlight them all (click the top one then hold shift go down to bottom and click the last one). Click Add. Under the general tab in the archive format box click "ZIP". In the files tab in the archives box click "Put each file into seperate archive". Click "OK"

Then copy your .zips into a folder on your memory stick. I recommend keeping all your rom for the top 3 emus in X:/ROMS folder in seperate sub folders (IE NES folder, GB folder ect.) Makes it so much more neat and tidy and reduces clutter in the actual emualtor folders. That last bit is just me being anal about organization though :) Take it what you will.

My NES directory went from 170 megs to around 70 megs.
Gameboy went from 109 megs to around 57 megs.
Gameboy Color went from 420 megs to 185 megs.
TG16 went from 40 megs to 21 megs.

Pretty much 1/2 the space. So worth it when you only have 256 meg sticks.

Yeah I know for sure that the newer version of SNES9x for PSP supports zips. The only difference you can notice is that it takes a bit to unzip the game when you start the file (small games like Mario World take like half a second, while bigger ones such as Chrono Trigger take maybe a second or 1.3 seconds.) Still worth the 1/2 file size in my opinion as 1 second isn' that big of deal.

Welp, my brand new PSP 1.5 should be here, probably on Monday or Tuesday. Can someone please point me to the main Exploit website that has all of the software and tutorials and guides and whatnot? Uhh.. this is a valid request, is it not? Not asking for ROMs or anything, just the tools to get homebrew running on my PSP.

Thanks in advance...
