PSP: 50% performance increase waiting to be unlocked?

If I don't want to buy a higher capacity battery, what will this do to my battery life?
Probably fuck it up the ass.

Here's the thing though, Sony's always talked about how they couldn't do a handheld, battery technology wasn't there, yada yada yada. But now they have made a handheld, and everyone assumed they'd just made it a design concession that it couldn't use up too aweful much power.

Instead Sony worked around the problem, giving developers control (through libraries, though I'm sure Sony would require approval) of the battery usage. All launch games obviously would need to be at the lower end of power consumption, it is after all a portable and battery technology is still too limited to allow portable gaming as powerfully as the PSP's hardware could peak out at. The future option is there however, and as the quote from Namco said, very much up and coming. You can play these higher power consumption games at home when the system is plugged in, or on shorter trips, and alternatively play the low power consumption games (and probably emulators) on the go.

Seems less like Sony cripped the system and more like made it what all future portables should be, a truely versitile entertainment device that you'll use daily regardless of where you might be or what you might be doing. At home, on a short trip, or on long excursions, the PSP should have games with battery life lengths suited to all three. And when better battery technology comes up in the next couple years Sony won't be left in the lurch with old hardware, instead they'll just make all games at maximum clock speed.

My only gripe is that Sony would then need to make it mandatory that all games list expected battery life on the back of their cases, if not on the UMDs themselves, so that you know what games are best suited for what situations.

I'm most likely just whining, but if they knew this was the idea, they should have delayed the handheld 3-4 months to get that battery packed-in originally.

Yeah, you're just whining.

Battery life is 5+ hours -- how in the world can that not be enough to handle 90% of the typical gaming situations? And why should Sony have delayed the launch to satisfy the needs of a VERY small market segment?

What is "that battery"?

But said battery technology is more than 3-4 months off. More like a year, if not more, so we'll have to live with there being games that can devour PSP battery life in an hour or two for a while when companies really do start fully utilizing the PSP.

It's all good then, I am appeased.

Heh, the PSP will get a 50% performance boost in it's life. performance that is already there. but to the gamer, it will be like the Playstation "Type C" upgrade that PS1 was rumored / reported to get. a 50% boost in performance. mainly for Tekken 3. remember that? :)

I've been saying all along that I expect the PSP to exceed the PS2 graphically in a couple years once the full power is unleashed! Next versions on Dynasty Warriors PSP will be better for it!

When the GBA2 is released and truly delivers the present PSP quality, Sony will go "now i will show you my true form" and unleash full PSP potential. Nice.

I think I'll wait until they "unlock it". I'd rather get my moneys worth from the start than wait for some PR campaign to give it to me a year later.

Please complain some more. Tell us how you really feel about the PSP.

Sony still hasn't said anything about this subject, I think this was uncovered by pana. I doubt we will ever hear anything official on this subject from Sony. When they release more powerful batteries it will be a given that the MHz speed has increased.

edit: release new powerful batteries with a major firmware update. :p

I was refering to the fact Crimson Skies uses any topic at hand to make snipes at the PSP. I find it hilarious that anyone who champions the xbox will bag on the PSP. Anyway, Sony has talked plenty on the subject to developers.
