PSP - Dead pixels still an issue?

So I got enough money and I was thinking about getting a PSP. Is the hardware solid now? Any problems such as overheating, dead pixels or stiff buttons? If I order it today which firm ware will be installed in it?
 
I got the giga pack over a month ago and I noticed mine has 6 stuck pixels. Luckily I only notice them when the screen goes black. And I haven't experienced any of the other things you mentioned. And I think any psp sold now comes with firmware 2.0.
 
I didn't have any trouble with dead pixels and I'm pretty unlucky.

Overheating?! Nope.

Controls - I've noticed that my square button catches a bit at random, but it's not anything that has caused me to miss a beat while playing a game. I attribute the sticky to it not being full broken in yet.

Stuck pixels are still an issue (not so much dead pixels). There is a few on mine (giga pack). No overheating (never heard anything about that before) and square button feels kinda different from the others (but not stiff). As for firmware, mine had 2.0
 
unless you're a the type who refuses to buy a game if the case has a dent in it, then dead pixels wont be a problem for you. you can't even notice them when you're playing a game.
 
Stuck pixels are actually far more common than dead pixels. They are usually completely unoticeable except on black screens (whereas dead pixels are visible almost all the time).
 
To fix dead pixels, how much does it cost? I never delt it before but my friend has a large amount on his screen, more than 6 I till you that, so what's Sony's policy now?
 
Only issue is dead pixels and it shouldn't matter to you cause you can just look for them when you get it and replace psp if it bothers you.

Just make sure to buy from a store that will swap no problem (best buy, walmart, etc)
 
Launch PSP. No pixel problems, nothing. My two friends are fine, too.

I understand PSP411 or somebody has a download that can actually unstick stuck pixels. Something to try if indeed you wind up with a problem.
 
Went through three PSPs about a month and a half back.
1st - 8 Stuck Pixels
2nd - 2 Stuck pixels
3rd - 2 Dead Pixels

Kept the third one. I know where the dead pixels are, and I still have trouble seeing them most of the time. Screen dust is much more noticible IMO.
 
Call Sony and bitch about it for a RMA and a new PSP. Just be ready to write a ton of information down, and be sure you label the package the way they tell you to.
 
Kutaragi admitted that the square button on the PSP is less responsive than the others. This is a result of the design and "something which users and game software developers will have to adapt to."

I heard that it's because square is close to the screen. My PSP had a slightly sticky square button, but it's not a big deal while playing games. I only noticed it on mine while I was playing around with it when not playing a game.

I went through 3 also:

1st - perfect until 4 months - 24 stuck pixels
2nd - 5 stuck pixels
3rd - 3 stuck pixels

I kept the 3rd as well but will probably trade it in if a white psp ever comes out.
 
I've got 3 stuck pixels on mine, only one is even noticeable. I tried running the stuck pixel fixer for a few hours but it did nothing. It doesn't bother me enough to try it again. For me, dust on the screen is more noticeable than the stuck pixels.

Ditto on the white psp, i hope sony releases it over here!
 
I bought a PSP at launch...no dead pixels.

Ended up selling it over the summer...

Bought a PSP with my Christmas bonus...no dead pixels.

So, I'm 2 for 2. Never has been an issue for me. (No stuck pixels on either one.)

My second one has a sticky square button, though, but I haven't noticed it while playing a game.
 
I have stuck pixels that are only noticably on a static blue/green background, so I basically don't see them. The dust is much more annoying.
 
Dead pixels are a non-issue. They will always be there, and you don't notice them when you're playing games. If they bug you *that* much, then don't own a PSP.

Mine has about 3489520384920 stuck pixels, and I couldn't care less. I own the system to USE it, not to critique it for shallow flaws that aren't noticable upon use.
 
As long as the world is using LCDs, dead pixels will always be an issue. It'd be prohibitively expensive to produce them perfectly.

People are interchanging the words dead and stuck pixels when they shouldn't. Stuck pixels partial work but tend to stay lit as one color (basically one or more sub-pixel is not working). These types tend not to be that noticable. Dead pixels are pixels that don't work at all, they are black. They tend to be far more noticeable. Stuck pixels are far more common than dead ones. Anyone that does have stuck pixels should try that stuck pixel fixer video for psp.
 
I got 3 stuck pixels on mine since day one and it's impossible to notice in a game even if you know where they are.. even on pause. The only way to see them is when the screen is completely black (loading screens for example).

I tried the shitty video that is supposed to "unstuck" the pixels but it didn't work at all.

I agree that a few shouldn't get in the way of anyone's enjoyment, but let's not get carried away there champ.
 
1 white PSP, 1 black PSP, zero dead/stuck pixels.

I sacrificed my neighbours pet to the gods of gaming right before purchasing them, I suggest you all do the same.
 
I have one stuck pixel about 5 px from the top dead center. It doesn't appear on black screens, but I can see it on white. I don't really think it's 'stuck' since it is not always on, seems to be more malfunctioning (its always green). Oh yeah and I can't see it unless I hold the PSP 5 inches from my face and am looking for it. The pixels on the PSP screen are pretty damn small, to me the 'ghosting' is far more annoying... but that is just what you have to deal with with 'cheap' LCDs. :)

Samsung has a 0 dead pixel policy, why can't Sony? Sony needs better QA for their products.
 
I should assume everyone already knows it, but...

The square button sometimes gives people problems because the button is hanging halfway overtop of the PSP's screen. The button itself is built like a Tetrad in order to connect with another point located farther away.

Ken Kutaragi himself personally designed it like this, because he felt two more millimeters of width would've broken the PSP aesthetically, and if you don't agree that this helps to make the PSP incredibly sexy, Kutaragi will have a group of specially trained (and sexy) Ninjas come to your house and do unspeakable things to you.
 
have a launch psp. just have one stuck pixel (always lit). never noticed it in games. only saw it a few times when i watched sin city on my psp.
 
(Japanese) Launch PSP had 0 dead/stuck pixels but I was rollerblading with it in my backpack b4 getting the playgear pocket and took it out and had at least 10 stuck subpixels from a pressure point.

Went to Hong Kong and exchanged it for a 1.5 firmware Japanese PSP w/ 0 stuck pixels (first unit I chose).
 
My track record:

1st PSP- (December 2004)- No dead pixels. (died when it dropped off a counter. Short fall, too!)

2nd PSP (Bought second hand, summer 2005)- One dead pixel. (died when I tried- and failed- to mod the system with a kit to play on TV)

3rd PSP (December 2005, new white system)- No dead pixels.

All these were Japanese systems. The white system has noticeably better buttons (square especially) and the d-pad seems a bit better, too. This system ALWAYS goes into the Logitech case when not in use and will never be opened up...I don't want to buy another PSP. :)
