Fallen Xbot (cannot continue gaining levels in this class)
i need a new game (or two?). i havent bought a single thing since i picked mine up MANY months ago and havent followed releases much at all.

i have lumines (love it) and metal gear acid and ridge racers already.

i want some good thoughtfull suggestions, not just lists please. i know gta got great initial impressions here, hoes it stack up still (bare in mind i'm not the biggest gta fan, but it can be fun)?

most important; i dont want to have to forgo my roms, emulators, and homebrew. again, i havent been keeping up, but will i be able to play whatever game is suggested without forgoing this other (yargh!) stuff?

Tales of Eternia and Breath of Fire 3 are release in europe this week, in english

DJ max Portable is good (hard) and super robot wars MX is fun if you like strategy games and dont mind the japanese

i havent followed the psp much at all... is there a way to play imports? mine is a NA machine btw

is ToE coming to the states? i'd give that a shot

virtau tennis, yeah, that would definitely be a great one.

so, whats the deal with upgrading the firmware? anything to worry about?

The PSP is region free for games. UMD Movies, however, are region protected.

So far I haven't enjoyed anything as much as Ridge Racers and Metal Gear Ac!d. Haven't played Lumines, though.

For PSP, i'd reccomend Gripshift ... cheap, budget title but massively underated.

Its a mix of platform, mainly driving, racing and collecting. But the game also features a handful of 'fun in their own right' mini games (a snake clone, soccer, bowling with penguins etc) and most of all, it has a fully featured level creator. I love this thing - you can make pretty much anything, edit all settings and then play it or share it with a mate (on the internet if you want)

Great fun game, and only half the price of most PSP games (in UK anywaY) so i'd reccomend you take a look.

OK fair enough .. See, its SOO underated :D

I think GTA is great for the PSP, and Burnout is really good too. Virtua Tennis like someone said above is a steal for $20 and you can even get it at WalMart for that price.

ouch.

Anything the developer/publisher could do better next tiime in a sequel to make you reconsider?

i take my racing games fairly seriously, and just seeing pics/vids is enough to dissuade my interest in it. it may not be a bad game, but i doubt its a game i'd enjoy.

virtua tennis i'll definitely nab, liberty city stories likely too.

Wipeout Pure
reason: pure sex + lots of downloadble extras for free

Exit (when available sometime in Feb)

never been a wipeout fan, but yeah, exit looks way cool

Only pick up Wipeout if you don't mind hard racers with cheap AI. Its a good game, but unless you're dedicated (aka. not the reason to be playing portable games which are pick up and play vs. dedication) you're not going to see more than 50% of the game so it might not be worth the money.

Best PSP games are Megaman X, which is an awesome 2d platformer with several gameplay modes (though beating the game in each one only takes about a day or two) plus it's only $30. GTA: LCS is pretty much the best handheld game ever made and even though I love Lumines I think GTA: LCS probably stole the spot as the best PSP game. Exit which comes out next week is a good puzzle game with great graphics and over 200 levels. The levels are only around 5 mins so it's great for pick up and play.

again, i dont like wipeout. also, never been a megaman fan.

tell me more about socom on psp

It's time for you to become one.

How does the Megaman X PSP game compare to the collection that's out for the PSP? I'm all for great gameplay, but the collection seems to offer 6 of the X games vs just one for the PSP game and they're the same price. I understand one's portable and the other's not , but they seem to be the same price.

Or is the PSP game much better than just a straight port?

Back to the original poster:

Ridger Racer
Untold Legends (although, you should wait for the sequel next month)
Lumines
GTA
Burnout
Socom: Fire Team Bravo
SSX is great, but not anywhere near worth $49. If you can find it for $29, I'd recommend it.

To be honest I'd hold out for March if you can. March brings:

Daxter: A platformer starring daxter from the Naughty Dog "Jak" series. It's being developed by a new dev team called Ready at Dawn, but they've got some good pedigree and all the previews so far have pointed to this being a really solidly crafted piece of work. The animation, graphics and control look out of this world.

Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror: This looks to be one of the most robust PSP titles made yet. The graphics are sometimes confused as being run on PS2 hardware and the previews so far have only heaped praise on it. It looks to have a hefty single player campaign as well as 8 player ad-hoc and infrasctructure multiplayer with 4 gameplay modes.

Splinter Cell: Essentials: Made by Ubisoft Montreal, you can be sure there's going to be some good gameplay in there. I don't know the details of this game, but I believe it supports up to four players in SPY V SPY infrastructure mode. It's not a port either, it will span Sam Fishers entire career, from before he joined 3rd Echelon (and was a Navy Seal) and I believe it ends setting up events for Splinter Cell 5.

Just get Burnout Legends already.

maybe. if the price is right. as i said above, i'm a fan of the racing genre, and unfortunately, burnout just barely fits that genre for me...

virtua tennis is a definite, maybe gta.

any other impressions of socom?

I guess that's why I enjoyed it so much. :D

I'm pretty meh on it, but others seem to have liked it...

The controls are a little wonky for my tastes. I would have preferred a "Goldeneye"-esque control scheme like the one Syphon Filter PSP uses, but the devs instead used this mandatory targeting system that's really clunky to use. The graphics also look like barf with consistent slowdown in most of the levels.

Multiplayer's pretty well-implemented, though, so if you find yourself a fan of the gameplay and controls, you'll have a blast online. I haven't used MP much, so I probably shouldn't say anything more about it.

I suppose the game's worth checking out, but only if you can find it for cheap - I wouldn't pay full price for it.

multiplayer is going to be non-existant for me, so thank you kindly for your impressions. i think i'll steer clear.

Virtua Tennis is tons of fun, but I I got bored of it quickly because there's no infrastructure mode and I have no friends who own PSP's, so no multiplayer.

Racing? Might check out Need for Speed Most Wated, or Midnight Club Racing 3. Burnout's a great game, but if it's not your cup of tea...

Socom I can't give real impressions of. I was in on the Beta, but stopped playing because of framerate issues. They might have been resolved before release though.

i hate nfs and mc. burnout is still a maybe, as that game can be quite fun despite being a terrible racing game (it doesnt really fit into the racing genre, more of the crashing sub-gnre)

I believe multiplayer is where the joy of SOCOM's at. Why will multiplayer be non-existant? No router? Try getting the Datel Wi Fi Max. it looks like a USB pen drive. Just plug it into an internet enabled PC and set up the software and bam, instant Wi Fi for your PSP or DS.

SOCOM: FTB is pretty damn awesome IMO.
The graphics aren't that great, but I really love the multiplayer. If you think you'll be playing a lot of multiplayer with it, it's awesome. The controls are easy and despite the lock-on it requires skill and tactics to really do well. Playing with 16 players is really the best experience, and of course, get the headset.

I've heard you need the remote dongle to plug the headset in to the PSP, is this true?

Fair enough, but I'd like to have the option if I can, which is why I'm glad more and more PSP devs are making the extra effort and adding infrastructure support.

You know, if you're only going to be playing VT in 1p then you might be better off going with Hot Shots Golf. Don't get me wrong, I love my VT but if I didn't have access to MP then it wouldn't get much of a look in anymore. Although if you can pick it up cheap, then go for it. I know, way to flip flop..

Preorder SFA3 in order to get the bonus pad, then you can buy and enjoy both DarkStalkers and GGXX

Guilty Gear XX#Reload is a solid fighter
Star Wars BattleFront is a decent Shooter
Virtua Tennis of course
Hot Shots Golf of course

I can't believe i left HSG out of my listing.

Seriously, this is a MUST HAVE game. I don't normally care for golf games, but it was incredible.

Smackdown vs. Raw is a really good wrestler if you are a fan of the genre. The load times are worth putting up with for this game.
