The game will come with a tilt sensor. When playing the game, you will not need to press any directional buttons, but rather simply tilt your PSP in the direction you want the mercury blob to go. The simple device will plug in to the PSP’s USB port and take place as the first named gaming add-on for the PSP. You can find out more about Mercury in the latest issue of Edge Magazine.

Sony is teh inovative. I can't believe that Nintendo has never done something like this before!!!

Oooh, interesting. I'm curious though, I'd think the game would still be controllable with the d-pad/analog nub though right? I mean, assuming you end up losing the tilt device.

Yes, there's an interview with Archer McLean in Edge, where he says they'll try their best to make that peripherial selling together with the game. So far they have a working prototype - a tilt sensor that is better than the one used in the GBA game, and reportedly it works very nice with the game, but is a rough, bulky prototype. Regardless if the sensor makes it to the market or not, the game will be playable with the analog controls and buttons. They are also planning to make a home console versions of the game, possibly with the special tilt controller too (Personally, I think that type of the device makes a lot more sense on handhelds though)

Are you guys being serious -- I can't tell. Have you forgot Kirby's Tilt n Tumble?
The Devil!
Ha, Kirby's Tilt had a tilt sensor, and Made in Wario for the GBA has a tilt feature as well.
Even though, Mercury is one of my most anticipated PSP games, and it still looks interesting. The tilt sensor may be a little gimmicky, because it could be controllable with either the d-pad/nub.

Wait, this is being made by Archer McLean? Shit, sales +1!
You guys are also not including Super Happy Puzzle Game Happy Pannechu! for the GBA.

I had the same... How will it work? UMD is discmedia isn't it?
It's a USB device, well it uses PSP's USB port.

And yes, it's a shame Kirby's Tilt N Tumble GC never made it through. Only connectivity game I was interested in.

now that is a very mature and cool idea, Nintendo eat your heart out!

I'm not sure if that's sarcasm, but Nintendo did it on the GBC. It was also one of the first concepts Nintnedo showed off for connectivity at Spaceworld 2001, with Kirby Tilt N Tumble 2/Roll-O-Rama.

Teh Sarcasm!

:lol OK. Sorry, the coffee hasn't kicked in yet.

I didn't know this was by Archer McLean either!

That's another sale they've got then. Unlockable version of Dropzone please :)

Is this game made by Sony? Because if not, then all you guys screaming Sony is teh innovation and bringing up Nintendo aren't too bright, I'm afraid.

Noone in that interview was trying to deny that the tilt sensor was first used in various GB/GBA games, but that still doesn't change the fact that it makes a lot of sense to be used with this game too. The game will be playable using the regular controls too, btw. The biggest innovation about the game are the physics of the mercury blob. They mentioned how difficult it was to make those physics work the way they wanted, and fast enough on PSP and today's consoles. They also included various reflections on the blob, real time shadows, etc. The game should be ready for the US/EU PSP launch.

I think they are joking. The game is not made by Sony, it's made by an independent dev studio headed by Archer McLean (the guy who made varios famous pool/snooker games). He said Sony people were really interested and enthused about the game though, and they thought it made perfect sense on PSP, gameplay and technology-wise, and were very helpful during the development process.

It's a third-party game and a third-party peripheral. But hey, facts are for nerds.

And, of course, tilt sensors were used in game control before Nintendo did it as well. As with so many cool bits of tech, I think I first saw it in the Micro User back in the early to mid 80s.

I know they're joking (the sarcasm isn't exactly subtle), and I was referring mainly to that Jr. guy. If this was a Sony made game, and Sony came out and was touting it as an innovative feature that only the PSP can handle, then I could understand the (sarcastic) "Sony is teh inovative. I can't believe that Nintendo has never done something like this before!!!".

The silver ball is a nice way to show some PSP graphics power off :) I'm a bit worried about battery power (yeah yeah), since the tilt sensor in Mawaru Made in Wario reduces the battery life by 1/3 as well.

If they get the physics of the ball right, they should make a realistic pinball game!!

What is really sad, is that Kirby Tilt n Tumble was being transformed into a very cool, generic cube/sphere/geometric shape puzzle game called Roll-a-rama. Well, looks as though Sony really liked Nintendo's idea and is going to try and capitalize on it before Nintendo makes it to market.

I'm not trying to argue that Sony always steals ideas from Nintendo, as the Eye Toy is proof of the opposite. But in this case, it's clear that Sony saw Nintendo's ideas and is trying to run away with them. Hopefully Nintendo has Roll-a-Rama planned as a DS release or something because I've always felt that tilt technology should be a big part of gaming.

Mercury looks neat.

[I didn't realize Sony didn't make the game, but my view of the company remains unchanged. My quick assumption is based on so many passed occurences]

:lol

How are your physics/chemistry skills? It's a little blob of liquid mercury, not a silver ball. It's in the title for god sakes...

Sounds interesting. Might pick it up if it's not too expensive. Sounds like a decent Tetris/Fantavision/Kuri Kuri Kuririn/Lumines type of game.

Not true. Mawaru's rumble pack gobbles the battery life, not its tilt sensor.
