Question about Baten Kaitos

I have played for 2-3 hours and I am starting to get the hang for the game. It seems very promesing, but I have a question.

What's the number on the card for? Does it have to do with strength, how many cards you have of that sort or is it just there for something called Prize bonus?

If you get a straight, 1-2-3 etc then you get a percentage bonus on attack/defence.
Similar story if you get a pair, 2-2, 3-3-3, or two pair, 2-2 & 4-4 etc.

Ok thanks. Does that happen randomly, or can you actually affect it? If I play a card with 1, then another card with 2, and finally a 3. Does it work? Or does it have to do just how the cards show up.

Prize bonus for the corner numbers. The number level of the card, Roman numeral, is the strength.

This game will be perfect on the DS. Touch screen a go go!

Later on in the game you will have cards that have numbers in different corners of the card, and you will be able to select which number you want with the yellow stick to do either a straight or pairs.

You have to choose them in order for a straight, I don't think pairs are required to be in order, just can't have a leftover card that does not pair up. I simplify and use the strongest cards and lots of voice cards. elements canceling each other out MUST be watched.

Yes, it's all about the order in which you play the cards.

This game OWNS bad. The art is just-oh-so-pretty, music is some of the best VG soundtraks Ive heard and I love the story and the battle system. Hope it stays consistent all the way through, but the 3 or 4 hs into it already have me loving it.

Yup. I'm like 17 hours in and this game is alot of fun. The battle system is fast paced and fun. The art is incredible. The music is top of the line. The story is good enough to carry your interest through the game so far. I give it a very under-rated so far.

I still hate the voices for the most part. Savyna's is okay, and Mizuti is at least unique, but I want to punch Lyude every time he talks.

Otherwise I'm having tons of fun with this game.

I think I'm mellowing in my old age, because I recognized that the voices weren't so good, but it didn't really affect me. Two, three years ago I would have been screeching at my TV and banging pots together to drown them out.

BK's battle system is a neat piece of work, I enjoyed it a lot. Streamlines your typical RPG combat without dumbing things down.

What's your choice. BK or ToS?

Normally I don't mind bad acting (I've watched too much MST3K), but for some reason bad voice acting really cheeses me off. Thing is, I hate it, but I don't hate it enough to just turn it off. I still want to hear the voices, strange as it may seem.

Another thing I like about this game is the different approach to a few status conditions - instead of "confuse" making you randomly attack a character or enemy, it rotates the numbers of the cards clockwise, making pairs or straights a lot harder to pull off. I thought that was neat.

Baten Kaitos, probably, although not by any terribly great margin. The battle system in Symphonia wore on me a little after a while, and I like the background artwork in Baten Kaitos a lot more.
