Question about MGS Twin Snakes

Just bought this game for my brother's birthday this week. This is actually our first MGS game and I just was wondering where this game's story picks up from.

Does it pick up from the original Metal Gear from the NES? Is Twin Snakes a remake of MGS on PS1?

I'm a bit confused, I feel like I'm missing backstory because Solid Snake keeps saying how he's slayed a Metal Gear weapon before.

Quite a bit after, so not really right after--MGS is a story arc unto itself, with some back references but nothing that requires you to play the prior games to understand anything.

And yes, it's a remake of PS1 MGS.

After MG, MG2 Solid Snake and MGS3 and yes its a remake of MGS on the PSone. If you've got a PS2, pick up Subsistence when its released and you can get to play the 2 originals in the series.

I guess it sort of picks up from Metal Gear 1/2(2 was never released here in any form) on MSX, which never was released here.

Twin Snakes is indeed a remake of the PS1 original, the PS1 version had a special section that let you read up on the past Metal Gears, it does clear up things. I forget if Twin Snakes still has them or not.

Twin Snakes has a section in the menu that says "Specials". So I'm assuming the references might be in there.

The game IS pretty good, the voice acting is great--the only thing is the dialogue these actors have to read. But the overall story is really cool.

I like the music alot, but all I'm thinking about is how Silicon Knights made the game and how different it might be from the classic Konami touch.

Still, that Kojima guy's name is on the box and in the credits. I wonder if he's 100% pleased with what it turned out to be.

I wish Retro worked on the game instead though--the graphics are a bit plain.

I'd love to play the original MGS from the PS1 after this. Maybe when I buy a PS3, I'll buy that used.

PS-- The one thing I love about this game is the difficulty levels. I have no patience for extremely challenging stealth games, so playing it on "EASY" is great.

The graphics are much better in TTS, obviously. There's more gameplay -- they used the MGS2 moveset, which was wider than that of MGS. But the voice acting, dialog, cutscenes were all better in the original. TTS left a really bad taste in my mouth.

Why do you think they were better?

I do feel that the cutscenes are a bit awkward. Eternal Darkness had a similar awkwardness--weird pauses and such.

But I can't imagine how the cutscenes back then could be better then the ones made now. I mean, didn't Kojima look over them then and NOW?

Since MGS1 PS1 version is last gen it's a bit harder to compare, but within regards to MGS2 and especially MGS3 the direction in those games are superior cinematically. They gave the direction of the cinematics to another person. Twin Snakes has the most over the top actions sequences of all the MGS games because of that. It's pretty kickass in it's own right, but it doesn't have quite the same feel as the others.

Konami motiion-captured and made all the cut scenes for TTS themselves, not Silicon Knights.

The cut scenes in TTS kicked ass and were very graphically impressive, especially near the end. The whole last hour or so was incredible. (Gray fox bit wth MG rocked)

I was disappointed that my favorite songs weren't in TTS. Otherwise it was a pretty neat do-over. Both versions have their +'s and -'s, imo.

Can anyone explain why the hell you have to press start and A to go to the codec, rather than simply pressing start? Just seems stupid.

Pressing start does nothing except skip cutscenes, dude.

to me, it felt like TTS could have more stuff than the original, like the RE remake for the gamecube, they could add some areas, new challenges and etc, but I wonder if it's SK that was lazy or Kojima that didn't let them do anything new

Just beat the game. I can't imagine how it would have been to experience on the PS1 back then.

My gripes:

1.) Oh my god, will you please just stop talking?!

2.) Oh man, all the hell they talk about are genes genes GENES.

3.) Who killed who's brother who was raised by wolves in a forest? Seems like everyone's a martyr these days.

4.) For the next week I'll avoid all staircases. I'm sick of goddamn staircases.

My likes:

1.) Snake's voice.

2.) Ocaton- actually, I don't know about Ocaton. He's clearly made for geeks to pull for him. "Ohhhh I saw this in ANIMEEEEE". God.

3.) Overall a fun game, played it in 2 days and it kept me comin back.

:lol That was my major gripe with Metal Gear Solid as well. I've never been crazy about the series (the gameplay is just average to me, although I understand lots of people love it) but the story and cut scenes were a huge turnoff. It seemed like every boss had to go into this long speech while they were lying near-dead on the ground. Combine that with the ridiculous ending sequence (where Liquid Snake keeps coming after you like some kind of cheesy slasher flick monster) and I was actually laughing at the absurdity by the end of the game. The games always impress technically, but after an even more over-the-top cast of characters and story in MGS2 I pretty much gave up on the series.

As for the voice acting: mostly good stuff but David Hayter's voice was the one that I actually didn't like. His delivery always sounded way too forced, not very convincing as the ultimate badass operative, but I haven't played TTS so I dunno about that one. Why did they rerecord all the dialogue? Did the dialogue or cut scenes change that much?

There were a some changes to the script, the Darpa chief (was it?) had its own voice actor, and audio samples were higher.

I can understand why Hayter's voice sounded forced. He was probably thinking, "You want me to read this crap... again?" The script/sermon was horrible. Wore out many a start-buttons with this game.

If the dialogue was re-written, the overall game would have been heckuvalot better. I felt like Arnold in 'Last Action Hero' at some points. Or even more close "Demolition Man".

Maybe its just the way Japanese dialogue is? All flare and dramatic?

Unlike the ubercool underdog geek Okaton, I'm not too familiar with anime.

Blame it on David Hayter for puttin his share of the money to get the dialogue redone again. If it wasn't for him, i don't htink they would have re-record the dialogue and just re-use the original.....

Funny you should bring this up. I just wrote about MGS vs. TTS on my blog last week. Here's what I had to say:

Playing Metal Gear Solid the Twin Snakes after playing the original, which it was based on, you realize that it is exactly what it claims to be - an north american remake of a Japanese hit. While the graphics are better you just feel like you've lost something. Cut scenes range from over the top to downright silly, whereas the original they were all very cool. Music once that once melded into the gaming experience now shouts out "HEY! CAN YOU HEAR ME?! I'M THE BACKGROUND MUSIC!!!" Voice overs have been dumbed down (gone is Mei Ling's wonderful accent). Yeah, I know it's the same game, but it just feels too hollywood. It's like Eddie Izzard once said, "If they remade 'Room with a view' in America it'd be called, 'Room with a view....OF HELL!!!'".

(I know they're Canadian/US so spare me the correction)

Why is that dumbing it down? If anything, it's actually making the game smarter and more real. Just because she's asian, she should have an accent? She could be (and probably was) American born, so she wouldn't have an accent.

Truth be told, I was one of the few who didn't mind the cutscenes being "over-the-top" and "detracting from the story," because I find MGS' story to be a ludricously overrated, cliched pile of shit anyway.

The biggest problem with TTS is that they screwed up the balance by adding moves from MGS2 to a game that wasn't made with those moves in mind. If they had also changed the level layout, then it might've worked, but as it is, they made the game far too easy, and diminished the stealth aspect of it. I don't really mind the changes to cut-scenes and music too much (even though I prefer those of the original), but the gameplay changes make for a worse game, IMO.

As for the gentleman who said that Original RE is better then RE(make), I assume he meant relative to when they were released (i.e. RE was better in 1996 than RE(make) was in 2002), and I'd have to agree.

I stopped playing when i got to the shootout in the snow with sniper wolf. The switching of camera views every 3 seconds is out right annoying.

What's slightly odd about your viewpoint is that the things you are complaining about were, I believe, changes done by Konami in Japan. Silicon Knights only programmed the actual gameplay, or so I thought. The music I'm not sure about, but I do know that the cut scenes can't be blamed on North America.

Not only that, but they brought in a famous Japanese director (Ryuhei Kitamura) for those cutscenes.

To me it was alright, after playing MGS2 I really don't see how anyone could consider the new cut scenes "over the top". I will admit though, that going from this:

(on older tech) to this:

(on newer tech) was pretty dissappointing:(

When people say over the top people are tlaking about how Snake can jump way too high into the air, or how he evades every attack by doing some flip.

Yeah, but Fortune can also deflect lots of missiles with just her hands to:), besides, we're talking about a series where people come back in a freakin arm!

LIQUID WAS BADASS!!! >:-(

anyways, the original one had such better pacing in dialogue. The ending with Snake
pinned underneath the jeep was ten times cooler than the TTS imo. Don't ask me why. Plus, the part where Liquid finally dies in the original is better. He points the gun, then falls to his knees and grabs his chest, yelling "FOX?!" as Snake immediately goes "Die!" and Liquid meets his end. Then Meryl/Otacon comes and helps Snake up.
Ten times better than TTS.

Certain characters are expected to be over the top, like Psycho Mantis or Fortune. Snake isn't suppose to be, he's very grounded. Seeing him
flipkick off a missle
doesn't make sense.

What I hated most about twin snakes was the controls.

It just felt so awkward using the Gamecube controller to play an MGS game.
