Question about Walmart and the NPD

I posted this in another thread and it went unanswered.

Looking at this:

Retailer 2003 Marketshare Videogames:
1. Walmart 21%
2. Best Buy 13%
3. GameStop 12%
4. Target 10%
5. Toys R Us 9%
6. Electronics Boutique 9%
7. Circuit City 4%
8. KB Toys 3%
9. Kmart 2%
10. Costco 1%
11. Others 16%
TOTAL: 100%

Why is Walmart not included in the NPD? If they have that much marketshare, then aren't all the numbers way off for all consoles? Or is this just game sales marketshare?

Wal-Mart doesn't want to be included, I'm sure to the more secretive they are about their sales info the more they think they are at an advantage somehow...

Walmart arent included in the NPD figures but of course they have a lot of marketshare and they want to keep the figures to themselves for competitive advantages predictably. NPD has 50% coverage. Whats worrying is the Gamestop and EB figures. They should be lower :p

Wal-Mart was part of NPD until recently (~2002), which is partly why NPD has good marketshare numbers for them. If you believe the market share of Wal-Mart then statistically valid for them to extrapolate sales based on the unit sales they have for other stores. You can, and should of course, factor in the clientele of Wal-Mart vs the other stores, which can make a sizeable difference (Wal-Mart == Ultra Casuals / Teh Kiddie / etc). However, NPD also has substantial information on this clientele and actually does business with Wal-Mart currently.

They do a hell of a lot more than simply adding up the unit numbers and multiplying them by their expected market shares. They do breakdowns by genres, publishers, etc to come up with their numbers. They're not perfect, but they're the best we've got and they are pretty damn good, IMHO.
