Question for Tech Savy GAFFERS: Hard Drive Problems

I'm just now using the H320 iRiver sent to me to replace my formerly faulty player.

When I was playing David Bowie's Quicksand the song stops 1 minute into the song, the song after doesn't play. The song after THAT does play however. Some songs play, some don't. I tried reformatting and reinstalling the firmware but that didn't help.

It seems very specific what songs work and what don't work.

Also when trying to transfer all my songs at once it doesn't send in order and after a few files it says CYCLIC REDUNDENCY CHECK! and stops transfering.

What the fuck? : (

Just in case it makes a difference, my songs are all 320kbps VBR. I've noticed all the songs I have at 192 KPBS work fine so maybe the bitrate has something to do with it. I derno :/

Any thoughts onto what might be wrong? Is the HD fucked up?

You should've gotten an iPod.

You should have gotten a shut the fuck up.

Hard Drives go bad, it's a refurbished player they obviously must not have fixed up enough. I have 2 more HD players. One being a perfectly working model of the same MP3 player.

A CRC (Cyclic Redundancy Check) error indicates a read error: the drive cannot read the data on the disc.

Have u checked that the track in question doesnt have any type of copy protection. Since u say it's a refurbished drive, the hard drive is probably on it's way to going bad.

Have your tried contacting Creative about it? Despite being a refurbished player, they should be able to answer your question and offer a solution I would think. I'm not entirely sure what may be causing the HDD to act that way, and I'm unclear as to what the error message means, but it doesn't strike me as a hard drive failure. You may want to try re-installing any firmware and attempting another transfer with a similar playlist to see if it acts up again. While it may be something specific regarding the file type you're using, if it's a supported format, it shouldn't be churning out ambiguous error messages.

I say do what Macam says: Wipe the device, install the latest firmware, and reload.

However, I'm more certain than he that you got a bum HDD. RMA that sucker.

Though I appreciate the advice, it's apparent that nobody's even taken time to read the entire post.

Firstly, it's iRiver. Not creative.

Secondly, I already reformatted and reinstalled. No dice, as I said per my original post.

Thirdly, to the person who said sarcastically FM Tuner >>> Functional MP3 player. Fuck yourself. If you're too stupid to figure out how to use something that doesn't say apple on it and doesn't have a scroll wheel that's you're problem. Nobody asked you. Go away.

The second one I overlooked, but don't fault me for the first one. I thought iRiver was a brand of Creative, like a Creative iRiver (see also Sony Xbox). :: shrug :: The only Creative thing I own are a pair of PC speakers I bought two years ago.

Not sure. I did a really quick look over at iRiver's site and couldn't find any product info on the model you have, so I have no idea what size HDD you'd need. Provided you have the proper tools to open the thing, it shouldn't be too hard to find a replacement drive if you know the size, capacity, and speed of the drive; you could grab that info off a product page potentially, or you could just go ahead and open it up yourself and see if you can get the model number off of the drive that way and Google a bit to see what deals you can come up with.

No problems.

Do you know of any places I can buy a replacement HD that will fit the player?
It's a 1.8" format HD (a Toshiba MK2004GAL) which is pretty rare and expensive. It's probably not worth it getting it, if it is even a good idea to change it yourself. Try the warranty if its still covered.

Sounds like the HD is messed up. I would suggest heading over to misticriver.net, which is the best iRiver community on the net. They'll give better advice on what to do.
