Questions to New Yorkers and people who have been to NY in general...

I'm planning a trip to New York City in mid-June and I have a few quick questions that I was hoping some NYers could help me out with:

1. To those who have been to Yankee Stadium: How are the seats in the upper tier section? ("Tier 2" specifically) They have a $5 day and I ended up with Tier 2 - Row F...any good?

1a. What would be the best way to get to Yankee Stadium if I am staying in the city somewhere? I won't have a car, mind you.

2. Any recommendations on cheap, but good (and safe) hotels? I'm only staying one night or two during the week. I'd like something in the city that is close to stuff. I'm coming in via train to Penn Station, if that helps any with an easy location.

3. I guess that is it for now...

I went to NYU and it is exactly like the Simpson's episode on NYC.

To answer your questions, I live in NYC. Specifically The Bronx. So here are my answers:

1. For the price, you really can't beat it. It's $5, and that's a steal. You get to see all of the important action.

1a. As for getting to Yankee stadium, the number "4" train is obviously the best possible option, with the "D" coming in at a distant 2nd. You can catch the number "4" train at Grand Central station. If you are on the west side, just go to Times Square and take the shuttle train (AKA the "S" train), and this will take you directly to Grand Central station, where you can transfer to the number "4" train. Otherwise you can stay west, and catch the "D" train to Yankee stadium.

2. As far as hotels go, cheap hotels and NYC don't go together. Nearly all hotels in the city are very expensive. Even the "cheap" hotels often set you back more than what a good hotel would cost in another city. There are a couple a cheap hostels around Times Square, but I recommend that you check a website like Hotels.com or something similar for a good deal. Search one of those sites, until you find a price you can afford, and I'll tell you how good or bad the hotel and area are.

PS: You don't have to go exactly to Grand Central to catch the number "4" train, but you do have to be on the east side. If you're in midtown, you can catch it on 59th Street and 86th Street. Also, if you visit Harlem, the number "4" can also be caught there as well.

You aren't welcome here.

That's for sure. Your comment reminded me that New York is probably one of the most anti-tourist cities on the planet. It's quite shocking.

yeah, who wants to go see the yankees? Its all about my NY METS baby

How often can you actually say that with a straight face? I can only imagine once every 5 or 6 years, this being one of those times.

I'm actually not going to see the Yankees - I am going to see the Pirates. :)

I'd like to head up to Boston for the weekend games, too, but apparently Red Sox games are sold out for the season or something.

Thanks for the answers guys!

That's the funny part. I'm a hardcore Yankees fan, and normally I'd be offended by smartass comments like "Yankees Suck", but with the way they've been playing lately, I really can't defend them. The Mets are playing much better as of now, and I'm actually really happy about that. I support the Mets as a NY team.

Oh yeah, as Loxy said, NYC is NOT a very friendly place, so if you're a very thin-skinned person, you may not be able to handle NYC. Some people are very anti-touristy, while other are just plain nasty in general. Even native NYers like myself deal with nasty attitudes on a daily basis. It's almost as if everyone in NY hates their job and life, with a few exceptions such as people like myself. With that said, make sure you check out the East Village when you come by. Also, why not patrol the Yankee Stadium late night? You'll see what I mean. :D :lol

I'll second that. I used to work in Time Square at a retail store and can tell you that New Yorkers are in fact not rude and obnoxious, but its the retard tourist who act in such a manner. I'm assuming they thought that's how you're "supposed to act" or some other nonsense.

I don't know what's worse, the idiots that wanted to make sure that they visit Ground Zero or the Virigin Megastore which is a fucking expensive record store.

1. To begin, the Yankees do suck. But, that aside, get in the stadium for your $5 and go down to the lower sections, seek out an agreeable looking usher, tip him some cash while asking if he can help you get better seats. (I'd think the minimum tip should be $20 depending on how many seats you're looking for.) You should find yourself with a much better view.

1a. For my money, the best way to get to Shea or Yankee Stadium from Manhattan is by ferry, although if you're not on the east side, it may not be practical. It is easily one of the most relaxing and pleasant ways to go. No traffic, amazing scenery and on-board refreshments. In the summer, it's the only way to go. (It's a tad pricey, however.) Get some info here: http://www.nywaterway.com/baseball_yankee.html

3. If you'd like a reasonable alternative to hotels in NYC, which as stated, is generally NOT cheap, consider searching on craigslist.com or some such site for short term sub-letting. You should even find one day rentals. My sister sub-lets her apt. in the village regularly. Just be prepared to share your temporary abode with a stranger. Advantages: it should be cheaper, you may get free food out of the deal, it can be nicer than hotels (access to kitchen/stereo/computer/etc.), and you may make new friends. Just a thought.

They're sold out for the remainder of your existence.

They run TV commercials here claiming that "Select tickets are still available!", but it's bullshit. About eight hours or so after the full schedule went on sale, the only tickets remaining, for all games, were scattered single seats and standing room only. I'm just glad I have a friend with season tickets.

NYU is a university... *cough*

:lol Thanks for the heads up.

I was being sarcastic btw, I guess I should have put some emoticon there though.

A lot of people love NYC, I really got sick of it though. Loved somethings about the city and didn't like others. Damn, I really miss the food though. DC is like the worst city restaurant wise.

I found a number of nice places in DC and Arlington when I went down, actually... I don't really eat in the city all too often (too expensive), but for a city it's size, there was a nice selection in DC. Ethopian food, baby!

There are some great restaurants in DC, but my problem is none of them are near me. I live right by the national cathedral and it seems like there is nothing good that is nearby my apartment.

And the other thing is anything decent is incredibly expensive. At least in NYC you can walk 2 blocks or order some kickass pizza if you are not looking to spend a lot on a meal (seriously NO good pizza in DC).

Quoted for truth, mostly. Personally, I think it's rather ghoulish to go down to Ground Zero if you're more than, say, three or four degrees away from someone who died there. It's becoming a tourist "attraction," and I think it's disgusting.

Anyway, while Virgin is an overpriced record store, occasionally they DO have some decent sales. It's not often, but they're handy.
