Quibi Is Shutting Down Barely Six Months After Going Live

LMAO.
The streaming service, which served up shows in 5- to 10-minute "chapters" formatted to fit a smartphone screen, has been plagued with problems since its April launch, facing lower-than-expected viewership and a lawsuit from a well-capitalized foe.

Quibi was designed for people who consume entertainment in short increments on their smartphones, but the coronavirus pandemic forced would-be subscribers away from the kinds of on-the-go situations Quibi executives envisioned for its users. Quibi eventually allowed subscribers to watch its shows on their TVs.

Quibi, which cost $4.99 a month, also had to compete with a growing number of rivals, with Walt Disney's Disney+, Apple Inc.'s Apple TV+, AT&T Inc.'s HBO Max and Comcast Corp.'s Peacock all launching in the past year.

I was offered 3 months of it free

opened it once and never touched it again

what a horrible idea

when it comes to short bursts of entertainment, it's competing with people's social media apps

and YouTube

never had a chance

I actually kind of liked the idea. Short-form storytelling can be cool. Some of the clips and hooks they set up in the advertisement, made me want to check out the rest.

However, it's telling that I never went beyond that, to the App Store.

The only thing Quibi will be remembered for is being the answer to "How to piss away $2 Billion in less than a year and end up with absolutely nothing to show for it"

oh thank fuck
I had a slight worry entertainment might actually skew in their favor. Fucking dystopic idea, I know.

I'm not against short form (Netflix have done a few shows), but yeah I think they were taking it to the extreme.

Oh yeah, Sweet Tag BTW I approve :messenger_ok:

The worst part's the mobile aspect ratio. Hell I just don't like mobile phones in general.

Streaming when you are on the go and nobody is on the go. Horrible timing. Plus a fee lol no. I may or may not have loved downloading entire seasons and watching them straight

Looks like they had a Soderbergh helmed project and everything

Apparently the way you held your phone (vertically or horizontally) affected the way you interacted with the media.

That's kind of neat, I guess?

Yea COVID really fucked its whole business model.

Speaking of - is Tidal still around? I can't imagine it's doing well.

lmao can you believe that MoviePass' business strategy of "letting people see 30 movies a month for $10" was more financially viable than shooting shows with 9:16 aspect ratio
