I swear to fucking God. Talk about invasive programs, it doesn't get much worse than Yahoo Messanger. Once you install it, yahoo practically takes over your entire computer without even asking.

No I don't want Yahoo to be my default ANYTHING.

NO I do NOT want Yahoo Toolbar in my FireFox.

NO.

NO.

NO.

It does so much shit without asking it's crazy like a virus. I eagerly await Google devouring Yahoo.

I don't like any program that installs other programs without your permission. I just hate how Quicktime opens as soon as windows starts. RealPlayer is the absolute worst.

What's wrong with QuickTime?

It's one of those things that automatically makes itself a default player of everything. Quicktime I can tolerate, RealPlayer and Yahoo Messanger I cannot.

Alternatives!

IM:
Gaim - http://gaim.sourceforge.net/ - Free IM. Handles all platforms.
Trillian - http://www.trillian.cc/ - Basic version is free and handles all major platforms. Need the pro version for Jabber and others.
BONUS! On the Mac, you've got AdiumX and Fire. Both free!

Quicktime and Real - http://www.codecguide.com/ - download the Quicktime and Real Alternative packages. The codec packs are good too.

PROTIP: Always, always, always select "Custom" during an install. If you don't, invasive programs like Yahoo IM will install their 52 "helper" applications that screw up your computer.

PROTIP #2: Buy a Mac.

I'll buy a mac when I have enough money for Protools. Until then I'm sticking to what I know.

That's cool. The prolonged suffering will make the joys of OS X that much more meaningful.

Yep.

You can disable Quicktime from launching every time in Windows by opening Quicktime and digging through its' Options menu IIRC. It runs great on a Mac, but it did have that quirky behavior on the PC for some reason. Similarly, with RealPlayer; I loathed the thing for years and years, but the latest version is just fine in the Mac. No qualms from me, and it's actually better than WMP on the platform, though that's not saying much as WMP is one of the worst programs on the Mac, hands down. As for Yahoo Messenger!, I'd recommend Trillian. It's the only chat client on the PC that I remember even remotely liking, and the latest version's UI is far improved from when I installed it years ago.

Hmm, all Quicktime opens for me are .mov files..I'm too dumb to know how to make it choose select stuff I'd think, so maybe I have a cool version that doesn't do what was happening with your comp.

Fuck that, I installed totem on linux with a w32 codec pack. Everything works. Quicktime, Real Player, all kinds of shitty, obscure codecs. Everything. :)

Quicktime is cool, but Realplayer sucks shit. That player is nothing but nasty marketing bloatware piled on some code that probably hasn't been seriously updated in like 5 years.

Wait what does Yahoo do without asking? It asks you a shitload of questions during the Messenger and/or Toolbar install process.

Real Player is nasty. I like Quicktime apart from one reason...it wouldn't let me install QT7 without downloading and installing iTunes first! FFS that is ridiculous!

It's hard to find from within the apple site but if you google standalone quicktime player you can still get it without Itunes:

Thanks. Someone told me about that 20 seconds after I installed iTunes :lol I've kept iTunes on my system and just deleted the multiple shortcuts it made on my desktop, taskbar and start-up bar. If Hell ever freezes over then I might try using it some time

Shhh! Don't let the facts get in the way of a bad post!

none of those programs instal things without your permission, and you can change the settings in quicktime and realplayer so that they do not start with windows. that being said, use the alternatives.

I chose custom install (newest version with VOIP). I chose for it not to install any bars to any browser. I chose for it not to startup when windows starts.

It installed a visible bar in Firefox.
It started when I rebooted.

Fucked.

Switching to IM alternatives.

:| When I installed quicktime that wasnt available. Damn Apple.

Real SUCKS.

Quicktime is good. Yahoo Messenger is only useful for the webcam feature. Other than that, who cares.

But uh, you can check a box to NOT install the toolbar, I think. :\

If not, you just.. uninstall it.

yahoo messenger i've never actually seen... i've always used trillian for it...

real alternative > real player

and what's wrong with quicktime?

it's always available, it's just not listed prominently on the site... you have to actively look for the link to it...

Ahahaha. I want it off my chest too: Realwhatever and Quicktime really are the shittiest pieces of crap I have ever had the displeasure of working against. I hate them almost as much as Java and people who bomb other people for not oppressing women.

Yahoo, on the other hand, has never asked me to install anything. Yahoo and I live in peaceful coexistence.

by the way, real for mac is absolutely fine. its strange how much better of a product it is.
Really. It behaves perfectly and doesn't do anything but play stuff. Real Player on linux also has a clean UI.
