Quitting nicotine sucks

Smoked for over 20 years, Quit in May.. first few weeks were the hardest. i still think about them and will occassionally mumble that i wish i had a smoke, But it gets far less frequent. You can do it!

i used a combo of the patch and shrooms to get me through it.

I went from smoking -> vaping -> cold turkey. Breaking the habit was harder than breaking the addiction tbh. Haven't vaped in years now, but I definitely miss the idea of smoking/vaping more than the reality of it. When I think about the reality of either, it's easy to stay off it (the smell, cancer, pods breaking, juice leaks, costs, etc).

I've picked up an addiction to diet caffeine free sodas though, which I think is my body's coping mechanism to the nicotine kick lol.

Question, how many shrooms did you do to help kick cravings? I've seen 2 people I know quit weed and alcohol overnight and they aren't alone. Seems like something that should be tried more often for people.

I have been downing coffee and chewing just normal sugar free gum.

Also chilling with a beer at night helps too. Just one beer though, I ain't picking alcohol up as the new bullshit. lol That shit is worse than smoking arguably.

But, it's easier this week so far... so less coffee, less gum, just got to ride this out.

Fucking 1 full cartridge a day to nothing. It's rough.

No patch, no gum
Did you use the Juul or Vuse stuff? Or your own device? If it's one of the former, maybe try using one of their lower nic cartridges first before quitting cold. When I vaped, I used the Vuse 5%, then I did the 2.4% for a month before going cold. I think Juul even has a 1.2%.

Also, don't feel bad if you slip and have a cig or a vape at some point. Just make sure not to get back into the habit. It's an ebb and a flow in the beginning, but you got this!

i am going to preface this with a warning.. I generally dont advise anyone consume the quantity i do unless they are very familiar with the species they are taking, and how their body reacts. Always start low, go slow and respect its power. My tolerance is high

several trips around 4-5 grams the night i quit and in the following weeks. getting exact measurements is hard cause i make these wicked Lemon Tek gummies and my extraction method probably isnt as efficient as id like. I also tend to keep to Natalensis, instead of cubes. I find them to be far more enjoyable.

I used Logic Pro Tobacco flavored. They only had one cartridge option being 5%. Definitely something to consider or even the nicotine-free vape that isn't really vape but just flavored air or some shit? idk.

My fallback idea if I feel like I am about to break has been just to buy the nicotine gum since my sister eventually found success with that. Thankfully not there yet.

As someone who quits benzo, alcohol addiction and multiple times paused nicotine (snus and tobacco-less nicotine pouches, which has much higher nicotine content) its actually walk in the park, outside of the fact that you get really hungry, which is shit side effect, but it is what it is.

I find much harder to quit caffeine, especially as someone who has low blood pressure, without it, I just feel lifeless for half of the day, makes me depressed, etc.

I think if you have something like Nicorette products in your country, those are pretty good tools to achieve complete glob...cough...complete nicotine avoidance.

But realistically, if you just lower your nicotine intake and use tobacco-less product, there is little to no harm. I am talking mini pouches of zin, 2mg max, few per day. And this is coming from extensive discussion with doctors since I am after transplantation. You diet is most likely culprit for heart problems, big cholesterol levels, etc. Even tho, vapes are shit and I would never inhale that shit.

Just that it sucks that when it comes to smoking or vaping, you have patterns in your brain, that you will miss the movement with your hands, inhaling some vapor and that you have something in your hand, etc. Being addicted on nicotine pouches means that feeling of having something under my lip can be resolved by mint candy there instead, not such luck with smoking.

But realistically, nicotine w/ds are highly manageable, for added anxiety there are miriad of medications (just refuse Benzos if offered, that is single hardest quitting substance, which you came across, coming from actual hard drug addicts and I confess that its the single hardest thing I've done), etc.

So i switched from cigs to vape...like...14 years ago? I went to vape (V2s) as it was cheaper, the vape flavors that matched what I smoked (lights) and they also looked/act like a cig.

I didn't intend to stop, but I found because I could take it a hit here and there, that helped take the edge off. The Ecig also messed up my normal smoke habits. I also took a job that limited when I could smoke. Between those I sort of slowed my intake down and was able to just stop. I was also using lower nicotine doses too.

Now I still had cravings, hell, I still do. sometimes I dream of smokething again...

But I know if likely not be here had I continued smoking. so it was well worth it.

Switched from cigs to vape like 10 years ago and then last week, took the plunge to cut off vaping since my blood pressure is whack.

Ho boy, this sucks shit lol.

Has anyone else gone cold turkey from cigs or vape?

I think I got this but always welcome tips.
Find something to occupy your time. I quit cold turkey when I started dating my wife who abhors smokers. Just find something to keep your focus and try not to do anything you associate with smoking.

Try quitting caffeine. It sucks on this day and age since it's everywhere. There are temptations everywhere since coffee is my favorite beverage.

Cold turkey several times. Been nicotine free for over 3 years now.

The biggest trap i kept falling into was getting pissed and having a quick cig at the pub thinking i could get away with it.

Once i realised i had to abstain completely ive found it fairly easy.

I tried tobacco and cigarettes once. Didn't do anything for me. No feelings of pleasure. I guess I was lucky in that regard. Energy drinks though, man. Those are the bane of my existence.

Try quitting 20 years of Xanax…

I quit smoking 17 years ago. Was smoking a pack a day. The worst was going out with my friends who were ALL smokers - and still are. I went cold turkey and I’m not lying if I say i took me 4 years to not feel the urge.

Today, I find it hyper disgusting and wouldn’t smoke if paid. It’s absolutely shit for your lungs and fitness. I work out a lot so the idea of corrupting that with smoke is idiotic.

Keep trying, OP. Every time you’re not smoking is a win.

I'm so glad I never started smoking. Like most people, I tried it when I was a teen, but found it disgusting and never got into it.
But I saw several friends getting addicted to it and wasting a ton of money and losing their health.
The worst part was losing my father because of smoking, a decade ago. Fuck smoking.

Quitting it cold turkey after 4 years of around 4mg per day was unimaginable hell, can't imagine 20 years.

What helped me quit about 15 years ago was changing my routines that were linked to my smoking habit. So instead of a morning coffee which was the immediate trigger for a smoke, I switched to tea. Stopped going to the shops that I bought my cigs from and walked to a shop further away if I needed bread, milk etc. Put a pause on booze as that was of course a major trigger to smoke. Anything that impulsively made me want to smoke, I changed or adjusted that routine. Haven't touched a cig since.

After a while you'll realise that you don't actually like smoking, it's just the addiction making you believe that you do. It becomes easier to rationalise and resist once you get to that stage.

Good luck.

I quit cold turkey and it was relatively painless. Couple of days where I was a complete bellend, snapping at people and for a while I was the prick down the pub blagging them when drunk but once the habit goes then so does the eagerness.

I still absolutely crave them once in a while even though it's been years. Like my brain is always going to associate them with calming relief.

I only smoked socially for like a year and found it exceedingly easy to quit, but I get how tough addiction is to beat. I drank hard for about twelve years and had to stop suddenly to get my life under control, then relapsed and had to quit again like ten years later.

Know what the toughest thing I've ever had to quit was? Coffee. Holy fuck caffeine addiction is real, and it is awful. Tried around 8 times in the course of fifteen years to stop and then finally had to switch to decaf and that was the big clencher. I found a decaf that I love and it's worked out great to give me that mental satisfaction of coffee without all the caffeine, and it was the best decision I ever made. I have real energy again, like when we were kids and we could do cartwheels out back all day and pretend we were ninjas.....well maybe I don't have that much energy, but getting off caffeine did legitimately help my natural energy levels immensely. It's crazy how when we get addicted to stimulants it really hurts our body's natural energy levels.

Only thing I did do more when I quit smoking was chew gum, maybe try that OP? Like I said, I found it easy, but some people say it really helps.

Also, the amount of money you will save nowadays by quitting is CRAZY. When I was smoking I was in the military and you could get a pack of camels on base for I think 1.85 or 2.15. Nowadays, a pack is what, almost $10???

I quit smoking when I was 22. I was only able to quit by using NRT gum. The state has programs that will send you a box of gum and they’ll setup multiple therapy sessions over the phone. It was hard to quit the gum. Sounds embarrassing now. I didn’t quit the gum for many years. Remember Zonic gum? They sold that at gas stations for years. What sucked the most is that Zonic was $5 for 8 pieces. Zyn and On! came around sometime after that and that’s the cheapest nicotine replacement therapy if you’re looking for one. I don’t exactly believe Nicotine is all that bad for you. I had two grandparents with dementia now. Nicotine has helped boost my mental health for years. I won’t touch vape, smoking, snus or chew. I’d honestly rather keep nicotine pouches than alcohol in my house.

I’m not trying enable anyone here. I have a different view of nicotine. I find alcohol to be a lot more damaging and sugary sweets to be just as bad for your health. Maybe someday I’ll quit it altogether. Swedish SNUS is supposedly less harmful for you than regular chewing tobacco. Who is willing to say that to someone who chews , wants to quit or wants another option? Quitting seems to be the only option.

I've "quit" nicotine three different times. Anixety and insomnia and irritability and brain fog peaks at days 3-4, then tapers off, and feels "normal" two weeks out.

During the worst times, exercise was the best thing for temporary relief.

You got this. (y)

I'm currently in a similar experience with quitting weed cold turkey over here. Was constantly high for 10+ years. I would say the biggest thing that's helped me is consistent exercise to get the stress/angst out, on top of seeing how much money I save just by omitting weed purchases.

If there's a local hiking trail, nature loop, or even a park near you that you can visit regularly, it's a great way to decompress and improve your health simultaneously. In-home workouts are good too but finding a trail you like to visit can keep your exercise routine from getting stale if you don't feel like doing a workout at home. If you can find access to a pool, swimming is also extremely helpful to destress.

I don't understand the point of smoking cigarettes.
When you drink alcohol, at least it makes you feel good for a moment (later comes the hangover, but that's a different story).
But when you smoke nicotine, it only makes you feel BAD when you DON'T smoke it.
What's the point?

Good question.

Like Alan Carr says its like wearing a tight pair of shoes all day jusy to feel the relief of taking them off.

The only thing a cigarette does it make you want another cigarette, honestly the worst drug ive ever had the displeasure of being addicted to.

The only thing that worked, and I mean 100% worked from DAY 1, was taking chantix.
Looks like it was taken off the market in 2021....sorry op! You can still get the generic though.

My experience: I took the first two doses of the RX and never wanted another cigarette.

When I decided to quit I was to a 2 to 3 packs a day (depending on how awful work was at the time) and I had been smoking for 16 years at that point.
Chantix made my body feel like I had just smoked so I never had any withdraw symptoms. The worst part is that part of the treatment program has you smoking WHILE you are taking the meds (for the first week or so). By the end of that second week I never wanted another smoke and I have not touched them sense.

This is a good analogy that applies probably 70% of the time. You smoke or vape just to stave off the cravings and don't really get the head rush.

The other 30% though, when you're mixing smoking or vaping with other stimulants/depressants like caffeine, THC, or alcohol, the effect that nicotine can have is a lot more noticeable/enjoyable. And tbh, that 30% was why I was hooked for so long.

I'm glad I quit, but also, I don't regret having gotten into the habit when I did. I worked full time and went to college full time. Some of my best memories were LAN parties with friends on the weekends where we'd get a handle of cheap alcohol, a pack of cigarettes, some monster energy drinks, and then game all night into the next day. I needed those kinds of days to look forward to.

Quitting weed was harder for me. The anxiety was absolutely through the roof. Ever see that movie Requiem for a Dream? Well, I'm glad I didn't end up like that. But that could have been moi.

Whenever I felt the urge to smoke a cigarette I just drank water.

With no/low tolerance you can get some mild rush out of it, which is honestly retarded, but then again my junkie brain kinda likes it, especially along with weed, and booze. Luckily I don't get that hooked on nicotine. Smoked for a couple of weeks recently, then stopped again for 2 or 3 weeks now again and it's not much of a bother. Honestly I'd like to continue, but I'm not really doing much for my health in general, so maybe I should at least try to take in less poison, instead of more. And yeah, ultimately your point stands, compared to other stuff tobacco just has a smaller pay off so it's not really worth it.

At one stage I was actually contemplating how much tobacco would maybe be kinda "okay", like, maybe there'd be a chance I'd not get lung cancer. The amounts I smoke wouldn't make it though, so I just stop entirely instead and just cheat for a month or two a year.

Hey I just want to thank everyone for their responses. I know this is just nicotine and not as serious/severe as other withdrawals but addiction is some real shit.

Reading everyone's responses be it as advice, hearing how other people worked through it, and just thoughts on it in general really helps.

There is something empowering/assuring that many others have been here before and made it through.

Every day is getting easier to deal and this is the most amount of time I have been nicotine free sine I was a teenager.

(Btw, it's crazy how much money you begin to save by not shelling out atleast $12 USD every day. That shit begins to add up)

Gave up 10 years ago. Genuinely found the most helpful advice came from (British tv presenter / legendary accidental partridge-r) Richard Madeley. He said (on tv, not direct to me) that a craving will last 5 minutes and then it'll be gone.

So, next time you get a craving, put it to one side and carry on with what you're doing and you'll be over it in about 5 minutes. That was all I needed to quit.

Smoking habit is really weird. I can easily quit if I am traveling for example. I never do it when i am outside; so not in my work, not when I stay for prolonged weeks at my girlfriend, not when we travel around. I only feel the need when i am alone, in my home, with nothing to do. In June we moved to Spain for a few weeks, then flew to Asia, then returned to hers and in total I didn't smoke since without even having cravings. Maybe sometimes, when drinking and being in a relaxed state. But, normally no.

I think its more a habit than an addiction. Its those moments of silence, or you want to empty your head, or when you have a beer, you might crave one. I agree its about triggers. I never want it in my work (you need to go out quite far, you smell etc) so I never crave one there, I don't associate my work with smoking. My girlfriend hates it, so I don't even dare to think to do it when she is around, she doesn't trigger. etc

Its true that the craving goes away quite fast. I remember walking to the gas station to buy a pack one day, and then after a few minutes of walking I didn't want anymore, turned to the lake and walked home listening music.

Nic patches work, I struggled getting of the vape back in 2022 due to health issues, as soon as I stopped the vape I used Nic patches for a month or so which pretty much got me over the cravings, good luck.
