CHICAGO -- Jury selection for R. Kelly's child pornography trial is set to begin Friday.

Prosecutors say they have a witness to his alleged sexual encounter with an underage girl.

The woman will reportedly testify that she was in the room at the time of the videotaped encounter.

Kelly, a 41-year-old R&B superstar, is accused of videotaping himself having sex with a girl estimated to be 13 or 14 years old.

He has pleaded not guilty, and the alleged victim denies she is the one on the videotape.

CHICAGO (AP) — The Illinois Supreme Court has denied news organizations' emergency motion seeking sealed court records and transcripts related to R. Kelly's pornography case.

The court denied the motion without comment Monday. The 41-year-old R&B singer's trial is scheduled to start Friday.

The motion was filed by the Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun-Times and The Associated Press. A request by WBEZ to join the case was denied by the court as moot.

The news organizations wanted the Supreme Court to order the Cook County Circuit Court to unseal the records immediately.

Judge Vincent Gaughan (GAWN) has said he's trying to protect Kelly's rights and prevent information from influencing prospective jurors.

Kelly has pleaded not guilty to charges that he videotaped himself having sex with an underage girl.

Wow. :lol The mother fucker has a video tape as evidence against him, and he has been walking free this entire time. I've seen cases where they don't have any evidence and people have gone to jail faster than they could landing on the big square in monopoly.

from what I read, both should be in prison. the difference is snipes should be in a low security deal with tvs and whatnot... r kelly should be in a federal "pound him in the ass" penitentiary.

Why he wouldn't want to strike a deal to get probation and donate a giant sum of money to a charity.

I think I did hear that some other women are involved which could of prevented him from dealing only with the state.

So long as the jury uses the Chapelle Rule requiring evidence such as having the videotaped girl holding out her ID while R. Kelly's grandma stands by, he'll be fine.

How the hell is that at all related to his celebrity? Child porn accusations aren't something that gets you locked up before convicted.

And what the hell does 'estimated' mean? They don't even know who it was? That would probably be why this is a CP case instead of a rape case.

Of the 12 jurors who will open the case, eight are white and four are black. The four alternates include two blacks, one Hispanic and one white.

Defense attorneys objected several times as prosecutors used challenges to have several blacks dismissed from the jury pool.

"I think they're using these (challenges) to get rid of African Americans," said Sam Adam Sr., one of Kelly's attorneys. A little later, he complained that "they've used 50 percent of their challenges on African Americans."

Prosecutor Shauna Boliker shot back, telling the judge that the defense had "used all six of their preemptories (preemptory challenges) on whites."

The R&B superstar is accused of videotaping himself having sex with a girl as young as 13 years old.

Among the six jurors chosen Thursday was a young woman who told Judge Vincent Gaughan that she had been raped, but could put the traumatic experience aside and hear the case fairly.

Defense attorneys later asked to have her dismissed based on the rape, but Gaughan rejected the request. "She looked at Mr. Kelly and said she could give him a fair trial," the judge said.

Kelly mostly kept his head down at one end of a conference table while potential jurors were questioned, scribbling notes on yellow index cards in his lap. Between the sessions with each juror, Kelly stretched his arms and yawned.

But when one young man, later named as an alternate, told the judge that pictures don't always reveal the whole truth of a situation, Kelly looked up and nodded his head in agreement.

Another of the people to sit on the jury was a 68-year-old man who immigrated from Communist Romania 38 years ago. He praised the U.S. justice system, saying he understood the accused are presumed innocent.

"The score sheet at the beginning of the trial — zero, zero," he said.

One of the final two women chosen as alternates was a retired Cook County sheriff's deputy who worked in the same complex that the trial is taking place. She said she knew little about the Kelly case but could be fair.

The final alternate chosen was a black woman in her 40s who did not face extensive questioning from the prosecution, defense or judge.

Kelly, known for sexually charged hits like "Bump N' Grind," has pleaded not guilty. The alleged victim, now 23, says it wasn't her on the videotape.

While people will lead you to believe that the Snipes thing was about race, it was really about fucking with the IRS. Statutory rape takes a backseat to the all mighty.

R&B singer R. Kelly arrives at a Chicago, Illinois, courthouse for the first day of his child porn trial.

R&B superstar Kelly sat expressionless as the tape was played. He's charged with 14 counts of child pornography and faces 15 years in prison if convicted.

Sketch artists were warned that if they drew any depiction of the acts on the tape, they, too, could be charged with child pornography.

Juror reactions were difficult to discern in the hushed and darkened courtroom.

Prosecutor Shauna Bolicker warned the jury in opening statements Tuesday that the "vile, disturbing and disgusting" video shows Kelly having sex with an underage girl. Bolicker told jurors they would see the "crime unfold ... frame by ugly frame" in the video, which she said was "choreographed, produced, and starring Robert Kelly."

Defense attorney Sam Adam Jr. countered that even the FBI, "the same people chasing bin Laden ... cannot identify Mr. Kelly as being on the tape."

Shouting at times, Adams told the jury that it is not Kelly on the tape and that the girl was "a paid, professional prostitute."

On the tape, the man's face is seen only in profile, but the face of the alleged underage girl is plainly visible. At times she appears bored, and she rarely speaks, except when the man tells her to call him "Daddy."

After a variety of sex acts including oral sex, masturbation and urination, the video ends with the man appearing to tenderly wipe the girl off with a towel and then hand her some money.

Kelly, 41, is accused of videotaping himself having sex with an underage girl who prosecutors maintain was as young as 13 when the tape was made between January 1, 1998, and November 1, 2000. The trial has been delayed by legal maneuvering for nearly six years.

The alleged victim, now 23, denies that she's the girl in the video. Kelly has denied that he is the man depicted in the tape.

The trial has been delayed repeatedly since the tape was mailed to the Chicago Sun-Times in 2002. The newspaper turned it over to authorities, and Kelly was indicted that year.

The defense asserts that Kelly has a "significant" mole in the middle of his lower back that has been there since childhood. But he said the man on the tape did not have the mole.

"There is no mole on his back," Adam said. "Robert isn't that man on the tape."

Kelly won a Grammy in 1997 for the gospel-tinged "I Believe I Can Fly" and is also known for songs such as "Bump N' Grind," "Ignition" and "Trapped in the Closet," a multi-part saga about the sexual secrets of a lively and ever-expanding cast of characters.
