Which legacy titles can you recall as the great racing games prior to Gran Turismo? Pole Position and Bump N' Jump are pretty legendary. :D

Lots of favorites mentioned already. Here's one that wasn't, and one of the few reasons to own a Jaguar, Power Drive Rally:

While I like top down (see my reference to Sprint), in-car is still the best, and even better when you have a wheel.

Pitstop 2

Ah... Pitstop II. It's funny, I've been spending a little time over the last week to get it running for just that track. (Hockenheim) Pitstop II was the only game I could think of that I could get my hands on that would still have the old configuration.

Love racing games generally, but the ones whose memories stay strong for me:

- Daytona 1 (Arcade)
- Mario Kart (SNES)
- Stunt Car Racer (amiga)
- F1 game on SNES with top down rotatey graphics (don't remember the name)
- PGR2 (apart from not seeing apexes clearly enough and the chicago course)

The awful kart racing side-game in Sonic Adventure 2 comes to mind

Daytona USA 2001 is fun, although it's hard to get 1st place for some reason without seriously tweaking the cars

What is a good racing game that you suggest for the GBA. I dont want Mario Kart because I already have that. I am looking for something like Crusin World on that portable.

I just use the medium settings. But you need to race with manual transmission in this game to truly win.

Super Monaco GP (Arcade)

There was an arcade version of Super Monaco GP? What arcade system did Sega use for it?

Edit: nevermind. Here is Ayrton Senna Playing it.

Yeah, there was an arcade Super Monaco GP, and of course, it came out (1989) before the Genesis version did (1990)

arcade Super Monaco GP does *not* run on Sega's 'OutRun' hardware
(OutRun hardware is older, can only push 128 sprites)....

Super Monaco GP runs on the "Afterburner" hardware, also known as the 'X Board' - which seems to be twice as powerful as OutRun hardware
(the X Board can push 256 sprites, plus it can do scaling *and* rotation at the same time)

now since the Sega Genesis is *vastly* less powerful than the 'X Board' / 'AfterBurner hardware', the Genesis conversion of Super Monaco GP is not even remotely close to the arcade, and the same goes for Genesis SMGP2.

there was supposedly going to be a beefed up Sega CD version of Super Monaco GP but that never materialized.

As I mentioned in an earlier reply to this very quote, I prefer an in car view, I recently found this top down racing game, Mini Racing Online. Free and customizable, there's a ton of tracks and it doesn't look like creating tracks would be that hard. And as an added bonus for me, it's got the old Hockenheim track, although it looks like shit compared to the new version.

Ridge Racer, Outrun, Turbo, Pitstop...

Daytona in the arcades with 4-8 people was fun as hell too.

Super Off Road was pretty cool, along with Super Sprint. RC-Pro Am and the sequel were very nicely done.

This makes me want to look harder for Racing Gears Advance in my area. I just discovered it's existance, and it looks like a homage to old-school RC-Pro Am type games. My GBA is not done yet.

My favorite racing game ever. Can't find a single fault with the game personally, even the cheesyass elevator/lounge music fit the game.

This, Stunt Car Racer and Sega Rally Championship. Perfection.

I played Super Monaco GP on both arcade and Genesis. I loved that game.

There are too many racing games for me to mention but narrowing it down to consoles, Advan Racing was better than Gran Turismo in every way possible. I think what drove GT success was its remarkable graphics for its time and featuring everyday cars. ADvan Racing wasn't quite as good looking but it had 12+ cars on track, rain, cockpit views and a whole bunch of Japanese circuits.

I was still hoping for a ps2 version but Atlus doth disappoint.

These are most of the racers that were widely held as benchmarks in the genre at the time...

Pole Position
OutRun
Super Cycle
Pitstop II
Revs
Test Drive 1 & 2
Super Monaco GP
Hard/Race Drivin'
Indianoplis 500
Grand Prix 2
F-Zero
Mario Kart
Rad Mobile
Virtua Racing
Ridge Racer
Daytona USA
Need for Speed
Wipeout
Sega Rally Championship
Formula 1 (Psygnosis)
Colin McRae Rally
TOCA Touring Cars
