Racist Hot 97 Skit Mocking Tsunami Victims

For the last week Hot 97 has been running a hideously unfunny and offensive skit named "Tsunami Song," that ridicules the victims of the Tsunami as "ch*nks" whose children will now be sold into child slavery. It's being played on the station's morning show, hosted by Miss Jones.

It's also featured on their website, on the right side of the page. (This is a direct link to the mp3).

EDIT: the mp3 link is not working from their site anymore, but they're not gonna cover this up that easily. The fine citizens at okayplayer.com saved a copy here for evidence. Also check their discussion of the song here and here

Here are some choice lyrics:

..All at once you could hear the screaming ch*nks
and no one was safe from the wave
there were africans drowning, little chinamen swept away
you could hear god laughing, "swim you b*tches swim"

So now you're screwed, it's the Tsunami

you better run or kiss your ass away, go find your mommy

I just saw her float by, a tree went through her head

and now the children will be sold to child slavery...

Uhh, yeah. Har de har har.

You may know that one of that show's other hosts, Miss Info, is Asian. She voiced her displeasure with the skit and got into a heated on-air argument with Miss Jones about it. But so far Hot 97 hasn't acknowledged that there's anything wrong with it, and they continue to air it everyday.

As a New Yorker, as a radio person, and as a hip-hop fan I am ashamed and disgusted that Hot 97 is allowing this to broadcast on their airwaves. If you feel the same way you can let them know here:

HOT 97

395 Hudson St. 7th Fl.

New York, NY 10014

(212) 229-9797

hot97@hot97.com

And if you really want to send a message, and make Hot 97 hear it, you can contact their advertisers about this. I may try to put together a list of sponsors, or if anybody else has one please pass it along.

New Yorkers who still listen to Hot 97's garbage, please do us all a favor and turn them off. They are a terrible representation of radio.

This is one of those times the the FCC should step in for the cause of indecency, and where the hell are they? Powell, don't take that load off just yet.

See, and people thought the hilarious Volkswagon ad about the terrorist blowing himself up was tasteless...

Oh, that's gold. You know, the kind of gold that ends careers and occasionally prompts suicide.

Yeah, hopefully people will lose their jobs over this.

... I just heard the song. It's a parody of "We Are The World" and it is horrible. It's not funny. It's just absolutely retarded. Furthermore, what fucking group of brainiacs volunteered to sing this? If it was my job, I'd fucking quit.

And somehow they managed to make a Michael Jackson joke completely devoid of humour.

fucking assholes

to even THINK of that--
to even think it would be a GOOD idea
to even actually act out on those thoughts
to even get it approved for the air

YOUTH radio station Triple-J has been accused of bad taste over a taxpayer-funded tsunami song that mocks Australia's response to the disaster.

Tsuna-me, by Triple-J breakfast DJs Jay and the Doctor, suggests Australians only gave generously to make themselves feel good.

The song compares Australia's tsunami response to its position on refugees, and attacks the Government's $1 billion aid package because half the money is a loan.

"Well we killed them in cricket, turned back their refugees.

"But now the time is right to offer help . . .

'Linking arms together, sing aloud in harmony

"So we can feel good about ourselves."

World Vision chief Tim Costello said the song was inappropriate.

"I think that is undergraduate cynicism that is not expressive of the deep sentiment of generosity that Australians have shown at this time," he said. "Australians have been genuinely touched and authentically moved.

thats the strange thing. If they tried to make a "funny" song about the tsumani, it'd still be incredibly tasteless, but at least you could somewhat comprehend it. These lyrics just seem purely hateful. Did the tsunami victims killl these people's dogs or something?

Seriously, it almost seems like it's written by a white supremacist group or something.

I agree, but for the sake of people around here who can't tell the difference:
The VW spot was taking a new, modern reality of life and kind of sabotaging it. "See, our car can foil a stupid suicide bomber!" This song, which I refuse to listen to on principle alone, is directly mocking a disaster and its 200k odd victims.

Fucking assholes, I bet they stay on the air. Meanwhile, O&A get bumped off for broadcasting two people having sex.

AHHH TripleJ.

Jase (Jay) wrote that song as a go at the govt who have turned back refuguees, etc etc and then being mighty and righteous about relief.

They don't disagree with the relief, they just want it more evenly spread and more of it.

Tim Costello had a realy good discussion with them about it. He thought it was harsh, but agreed that we should give more aid all the time.

woah. Way to get your point across. I am currently writing a song myself about my displeasure with the goverments foreign policy and involvement in the invasion of Iraq. It's called "Kill all black people".

Mental retardation at its finest.

needs to show more effort.
I was all set to come on here and defend that song due to it probably being tasteless yet hilarious. But then I listened to it and that was just poor.

If you are going to make something completely racist and offensive to so many people, you at least need to make it actually funny.

Ninja,

the triplej song is NOT the one above. It's a shot at Australia for being so self congratulatory over our tsunami aid whilst keeping genuine refugees in detention, giving less and less aid and generally being pricks.

Our tsunami aid is good but the point of the song that jase on triplej wrote is that we should give more aid all the time. not just be happy with our tsunami effort. It never once has a go at the victims who are worthy of all the help they can get.

Agreed, that song should be awful to everyone, including racists.

WTF? I usually like dark humor but how could anyone think this is funny? It doesn't even make sense.

Apparently the Hot97 staff are going to give a week's wages to charity or something.

I guess some good will come out of it. But judging by the song they can't be making too much.

i'm normally somebody for humor on almost any subject how hard it may be so it doesn't really bother me (btw i'm half indonesian). but i tought was kind of strange that africans are just africans but asian people are chinamen and c*nks, why not the same treatment for africans, guess there an easier target and otherwise they where afraid to loose most of there listeners.

but it wasn't funny at all anyway altough i really hate those "get togheter real save the world" type of songs.

Yeah, this song seems decent...I know the refugee situation in Australia has been a contentious issue for a long time.

This Hot97 song on the other hand just sounds sickening. Like Xenon I love dark humour, but nothing about the lyrics I've read comes close to registering a blip on the laugh meter...and I'll be damned if I'm gonna listen to it.

The racist comments don't really bother me (racism is something you just have to grow up and deal with), but the fact that they'd ridicule victims of anything does. Why would you want to make fun of anybody who lost a family members for any reason at all?

And yeah, I also usually like dark humor, but when it deals with specific people about a real event, then it's just not funny and becomes worthlessly tasteless.

I guess they have their freedom of speech, but what they're saying is definitely wrong and sick.

There wasn't anything funny in that MP3. How did Michael Jackson get involved? I thought the jokes on Stern from Sal the Stockbroker were humerous, although in poor taste. I think one of them was "Why don't indonesians bathe? Because they wash up on shore" or something to that affect.

It's pretty strange. No one made jokes about 9/11... This is like 100 times worse, and people are poking fun at 250,000 dead people.

LOL... The folks at okayplayer forum when wild. They've collectively contacted everyone from CNN to the Governor.

I don't know if you've ever experience racism, but it's usually not something you just learn to "deal with"

If people just "dealt with it" we'd still have fucking separate drinking fountains.

A lot of the people at Hot97 are just fucking trashy. You have this tsunami song. Star and Buckwild, some radio guys on there, making plane crash sounds when discussing Aaliyah's death, and isn't Wendy Williams on there too? That bitch is always talking shit about somebody.

lol, I hear this every morning on the way to work.
Hot 97's morning show is so wack since Star and Buc left...when did they resurface on Power 105? Are they there now?

Well of course...9/11 hit close to home, while the tsunamis are half a world away. Happens all the time. If we didn't see the video from this destruction, I doubt many of us give a shit about it.

I probably wouldn't give a shit about 9/11 if not for the videos either, and I live a hour from NYC in CT. On print, a number is a number.
