Raimi says Evil Dead 4 after Spider-Man 3, maybe FvJvA afterwards...

Ah, so now it becomes clear and those rumors of Evil Dead 4 coming out before a Jason/Freddy crossover make sense. Raimi isn't squashing a crossover altogether, he just wants to do Evil Dead 4 first and not have to work a story around whatever crossover antics happen in some spinoff.

On the heels of yesterdays announcement that Raimi has squashed the much talked about Freddy vs Jason vs Ash comes this news that what he would really like to do is make Evil Dead 4 as soon as he finishes up with Spider-Man 3.

Here is some of what he had to say in an interview with IGN Filmforce.

"I would actually love to and one day I hope to. I hope sooner rather than later. I really had a lot of fun with them, and I think the audience may now want to see one. Maybe when I'm done with the Spider-Man movie I can get to work on one"

He also had a few more words on his nixing of adding Ash to the Freddy vs Jason mix.

"Well, I actually really like those, the Freddy movies, and Jason is a classic American horror figure now. I have a lot of respect for those series, and maybe one day they will meet up, but right now what I'd like to do is, well I'd first rather make another Evil Dead picture, and then maybe when we're done with it, if there's an interesting story that really seems like it's not just a device to make money, which I'm not saying it was. I know that they wanted to do something really cool, but I wanted to keep the option open for myself to make another Evil Dead movie without the limitations of what that story may have done. That's really, I think, what it is", he says. "We talked about it, but then the press release came out and I think I would need more control than they would be happy with and I don't want to control some other director. Sean Cunningham's a brilliant director and I actually don't want to be in a position where I'm trying to protect Ash and the Evil Dead story and he's not getting everything he wants. Even though it might have been really great, I bet what he does is gonna be great, it didn't seem like a good position for me to be in. Anyways, they've got so many great possibilities with that franchise and those two characters, I don't think they really need the Evil Dead franchise to be part of it".

Flip flopper he's trying to use the press to ensure that he gets the deal HE wants, which is give me a budget to do ED4, release it, then you can use my character.

Boo on this, if it means the story in ED4 has to somehow tie into FvJvA.

Actually, boo on it anyway. ED trilogy is fine as it is.

Umm, I think that's what he said he wanted to avoid, which is why he wants to do his own story before they make changes to the current story...

Even so, he'd inevitably have to alter it somehow to fit, don't you think?

So in other words, Freddy vs Jason vs Ash will either not happen at all since Robert Englund wants to retire the Freddy character in the next movie, or will happen at around 2009.

Sounds really grim since I doubt New Line will wait 4-5 years for Raimi, before releasing a F vs J sequel.

I would think that if he did his story first without any interference, which is what he wants, then the writers of FvJvA would have to change their story rather than the other way around. At least, I hope so, but I don't think Raimi would do anything to lose the integrity of the character.

Yeah, I would hope so too, but I wonder if they'd urge him to just "fit things in" as a favor or whatever. Film makers are funny guys...

Just last night I was watching Star Wars Episode II, and I was thinking how much of the special quality and magic of the Star Wars universe was thrown out the window when they released the new ones. Sure they have their issues, but the main issue is that after such a long gap, no movie could possibly live up to the desires of the fans. Nothing could recapture the unique blend that everyone came to love, and by adding mroe they were just smearing the reputation of the whole thing. And then I thought how the best example of something similar would be if someone tried to make a new Evil Dead movie... so I guess the nightmare is happening now. Hollywood fully believes in Murphy's Law.

If it were just a remake but with all spiffy effects and stuff, I would be into that. But it wouldn't really do much in terms of story progression...

I think it could be awesome if it carries on from him killing the dead in modern times. I don't know if he could go back to the cabin that started it all...
