I'm installing a Kbyte 512mb DDR ram (pC333/255 184 Pin DIMM) on my Compaq Presario 5000. I realized, after buying the ram (it was on sale), that my computer might only support 256. I'm not entirely sure though. Can I still install it? It should just extract as much ram as my computer can, right?

How old is your computer? Supporting only 256 seems awfully low. Compaq 5000 isn't that old I believe.

Do you still have your owners manual? Or can you get a pdf version online? Email Compaq? I would be surprised if your computer only supported 256 megs of Ram total.
