Rancher feeds his cows candy due to high corn prices

The Light of El Cantare
The effects of this drought are starting to get crazy. I know some questionable stuff can go into cow feed, but this is something else.

MAYFIELD, Ky. (CNN/WPSD) - Ranchers have struggled with skyrocketing corn prices, because the drought has made feeding their livestock very expensive. But one rancher has turned to a very sweet solution.

At Mayfield's United Livestock Commodities, owner Joseph Watson is tweaking the recipe for success.

"Just to be able to survive, we have to look for other sources of nutrition," he said.

His 1,400 cattle are no longer feeding off corn. The prices, Watson says, are too high to keep corn in stock. So earlier this year, he began to buy second-hand candy.

"It has a higher ratio of fat than actually feeding straight corn," Watson explained. "It's hard to believe it will work but we've already seen the results of it now."

Watson mixes the candy with an ethanol by-product and a mineral nutrient. He says the cows have not shown any health problems from eating the candy, and they are gaining weight as they should.

"This ration is balanced to have not too much fat in it," he said.

The packaged candy comes from various companies at a discounted rate because it is not fit for store shelves.

"Salvage is a problem for a lot of these companies and they're proud to have a place to go with it," said Watson.

They shouldn't just feed them any candy, they should feed them the best of candies.

Candy Corn.

The corn that tastes like candy...

And by best I mean worst most foulest nuggets of crap of all time but hey.

EDIT: Beaten, also now going to watch some Lewis Black clips

I'm not like an expert on grass or anything but would that work in the middle of a 6 month drought?
Possibly, possibly not. How is the draught being determined? Lack of rainfall?

Regardless, I just hate corn-feeding of cows!

Those 1400 cows are probably crammed in a space that could maybe support 50-100 cows if they had to eat grass.
Like I said, "like a good farmer should".

On topic: I don't know how to react to this. It is shocking, but I don't think its really any more or less fucked up than how the industrial meat industry has been operating for the past several decades.

I love how everyone keeps denying it.. whatever it is... and we are all faced with record heat, droughts, crop failure, skyrocketing food prices...

like everyone said would happen, due to climate change..

This generation failed.

And of course, there is absolutely NO and I mean NO other explantation for this or a naturally occuring climate cycle.

Not saying that taking enviromental precautions is not an absolute necessity, to say...one thing is absolute is a bit much don't you think?

It don't matter if global warming is man made or not; the result is the same: Devastation.
It would help, at the very least, to not accelerate global warming.

Frankly? Yes. Cows are specialised grass-eating machines. It's why they have so many stomachs.

Thanks, I'll tell my dad he's a bad farmer.

You do know that farmers - even the "bad" ones that feed corn - don't only feed them corn, right? It's one of many components of their diet.

How about stop feeding cows corn and put them in a damn grass field like a good farmer should?

My parents have been able to cut their hay field one this year, and it barely has grass on it again. The norm for this field is to cut hay twice, and have some short grass at the end of the season to be able to feed a few grazing cattle on it for a bit.

You do what you have to do. Do you have any farm expertise? I'm curious to know.

Cows are fed a lot of stuff that is more calorie- and protein-dense than grass. To increase yield of milk.

They are production animals after all. And farming is a business.
