Random blurred vision

So for the last few years i'll suddenly get a percentage of my vision go all blurry. I'm 22 and don't wear glasses.

The only way i can describe what it looks like is static, like when i TV isn't tuned.

It'll start as a little dot in my vision then slowly spread until pretty much 60% of my vision is comepletly static. I cant read well, see well etc.

Once it clears up i'll have a killer migraine/Headache which the only way to get rid of it i've figured is to sleep but obviously i can't have a sleep at my desk in work.

I thought it was caffine at first that kicked it off but i've cut it out of my diet but the wierd thing is i can do months without it happening then suddenly it hits.

Any ideas GAF?

UPDATE : I've called my local Opticians and can only get seen to next Friday 27/3 ;(

You know the answer.

The blurred vision is a migraine symptom. I get it too usually a few hours before the full migraine kicks in, sometimes black and white patterns, sometimes colour patterns which create a blind spot wherever I'm trying to focus.

Maybe your retinal nerve is detaching. That's pretty much the worst thing that can happen though.

First time I got a migraine, that's what I thought. 'Shimmering lights? OMG, my retina is detaching.'

I know what it is and will hold it just so you go see a doctor. They have great meds for this condition.

Do you have any other symptoms? Just one symptom could point to a multitude of things.

More information can narrow down the possibilities, though.

It sounds like an aura, which is fairly common before a migraine.

But go see your doctor :-)

Edit: beaten like a red headed step child...

Used to get this all the time, it was to do with standing-up too quickly or doing something which caused the flow of blood to suddenly change direction.

I've only had two migraines in my life, but both times this happened beforehand, so it'd make trying to read really shitty. If I closed my eyes, I saw weird geometric sqiggly lines that reminded me of mayan stuff, similar to a spot from a camera flash but more detailed.

Blurred vision for most youths these days is tied to excessive computer, smartphone and television watching. Your eyes are always on a fixed point and your blinking decreases. A lot of it is also from dry, tired eyes. Use a quality eye drop like Systane Ultra or Refresh Optive Advanced and see if that makes a difference throughout the day.

Go to your doctor and get your vision checked. Don't go to an eyeglass store necessarily, but go to an ophthalmologist or optometrist, and get a comprehensive eye exam done. Make sure they check your retina using the new scanning machines, check your ocular pressure, check your cornea for possible keratoconus or astigmatism, etc. Your vision is important dude.

Sounds like retinal migraine.
Does part of your vision disappear? Like a hole in the center of your vision?

I don't think an optician will help, unless you wear glasses and think they are the cause of your headaches.

Go see your GP (family doctor) who should be able to do a basic eye test to make sure there's nothing physically wrong with your eyes, and then prescribe something to help with what sounds a lot like a migraine.

You may then need to go see a physician / neurologist / ophthalmologist depending on what you find.

Yeah like a dot then it starts to spread out.

I'll update the OP

Can only get seen to next friday :/

Yes. I have that too sometimes. First time i had it i thought i had a brain tumor. But it goes away after a couple of minutes. Sometimes followed by headache, but in my case, most of the times it just goes away. I tend to think it has something to do with muscles coming from my neck but i'm not sure. In any case, it's not something really serious, though it's fucking annoying when it happens. It becomes more serious when you get really nasty headaches.. Those can really fuck up your life and there isn't much you can do about it.
There is a great topic on GAF Migraine thread.

Google scintillating scotoma, for instance.

Anyway, see a doctor to be sure.

I havent been for a check up in years so it's worth going anyway i guess.

The OP in that thread is exactly what i'm on about. Really spooky stuff.

-----

It's been about half an hour since the blurry lines have gone and now i'm stuck with a migraine. Hooray.

Sounds like visual/retinal migraine, which can really freak you out the first times, but it's good you'll see an expert. Better safe than sorry.

Edit:
Of ourse I'd recommend you to see a doctor immediately.

Welcome to migraineGAF. This is a great Wiki page about Scintillating Scotoma (proper name for a certain type of visual "aura") that might help when describing the symptoms to your doctor. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scintillating_scotoma

Other things to note is how you feel. Is it just vision that's affected at the onset? Do you have tingling fingers, hands, arms, or face? Does light or a certain food trigger it? When you have the migraine are you nauseous, tired, can't stand bright light or loud sounds, can't think straight, can't speak correctly, etc.?

Common things to monitor (to help prevent migraines) are to stay hydrated (almost no one drinks enough water considering how much salt we consume), get enough sleep, exercise regularly, eat a balanced diet. Also, a common trigger to watch out for, is artificial sweeteners.

Dude go to the doctor. Now.

Could be mild strokes (transient ischemic attack).

Loss of vision
Persistent headaches afterwards
Possible loss of some motor function
Possible loss of verbal function

GO SEE A DOCTOR NOW

I feel alright now, just had some lunch, some fresh orange juice and abit of a walk around.

But when it's there it's horrid.

That is exactly what it's like then it spreads, clears up, then migraine hits

As others have stated, you are likely experiencing an aura, which precedes migraines.

Seek out your PCP or neurologist.

I mean, anything is possible... But it's not very likely. I'm assuming the OP is a young male without a history of smoking. TIAs aren't very common in the younger population.

What is much more likely, however, is that the OP suffers from migraines and should seek assistance on dealing with them.

Sounds like it could just be eye migraines, but I'd agree that you should try to see emergency services if possible, it could be something worse. Please see a doctor soon!

Or on the other hand, it might be nothing at all. I was having similar problems and it just ended up being that a recent cold made me aware that my right eye was 20/25 instead of 20/20 :(

Sounds like a migraine aura. What you described is exactly what happens to me. I never get an accompanying headache, but at random times, I'll get the aura. It lasts 15-25 minutes and then I'm fine.

This is a migraine with aura. I have the exact same problem although my blurriness doesn't last long. Have some caffeine pills handy for when this happens. The moment you start getting blurry vision, take one and lay down.

I have bad news OP: This has no cure.

EDIT: Also, doctor, etc

I suffer from migraines one or two a month. Mine all start with my vision going and being sensitive to light. I went to the doc and now get nasal spray to help stop them. So I would say go to the doctors.

Seeing my optician and doctor this Friday.

I want to say thanks to everyone who's pm'ed me.

I'll keep this updated when i've spoken to the doctor if anyones bothered.
