Read a thread on another forum talking about GTA4, and thought I'd throw out some ideas. Actually, I want to focus on one specific one. What would be the chances of a persistent online city with GTA freedom?
According to a quote I saw, Houser is using Everquest as an example. Now, all I can see in Everquest would be the persistance of the game. But the cool thing about GTA is that you can do a million odd jobs. Imagine a city where you've got hundreds of thousands of other gamers just running wild. Now some will be criminals or thugs, and some might to theft, some might choose to be cops or firemen. Now what if you had a system that dynamically generated quests/missions, and maybe even generated random plot lines so some missions wouldn't seem so random? I can see the chance to do stat building too, similar to Elder Scrolls. You have a bunch of skills that you develop by performing certain types of missions throughout the game.
So let's say you stole a cop car. You'd be in vigilante mode, and the server would assing you to bust the nearest crook. That would be another online player somewhere near you that you have to track down and kill. The ultimate AI for a change. The same with the racing missions and firefighting, and bank robberies and so on. RPGs do this sort of thing, although on a smaller scale. But I can't see why you couldn't have a server that could handle tasking hundreds or thousands of jobs. All the stat collecting and physics and so on would be peer-side. I really don't see why we can't have an MMORPG-style GTA game in the future. PEACE.
