Raw footage of PS2 launch night in Australia - 30 November 2000

Excellent footage there, the ps2 blue box feels so 2000s, "the combined gaming and dvd player", SSX stood out of the pack, just one of the nicest looking consoles and its lineup can match any console out there.

What a time to be alive. I had my toys r us preorder and tekken tag tournament… I have the softest spot in my heart for ps1, but PS2 is about as close as it gets to the greatest system ever made.

Late teens and young adults buying a proper system for their age, not like nintendo fans: thirtysomething and fortysomething buying a system designed for kids. Good lads.
Well back then they had a bit more exclusives for GameCube. Not so much today. Now people only care about Mario and co. You are kind of half right.

This brings back memories, still remember getting mine.
Though at my store in Australia no crazy shit happened lol.

Moments like the PS2 launch will be hard to replicate, ever again.
Moving from a PS5 to a PS2 there are two things that stick out - load times and the absence of DualSense feedback.
When Sony makes a DualSense PS2 it will be better than the original PS2 and the launch will be a bigger deal than that of the original PS2.

PS3 was the last real console launch experience, where there were people camping out and queuing up in the hope of getting one. Simultaneous worldwide launches with online pre-ordering just ain't the same.

I camped overnight on the streets of Shinjuku with hundreds of other people for the PS3. It was a real community event. Saw Phil Harrison and Ken Kutaragi walking by the queue in darkness. Scored my day one phatty before it was available in other countries. Priceless.

I remember seeing it advertized in the morning newspaper when it released for over 700 german Mark and thought "fuck. I will never be able to afford that".

Apologies if this was already posted but some of you lads will surely enjoy this nostalgic video.

Great memories. I was there at midnight at Airport West in Melbourne to get my PS2! Sadly it was defective and I had to get another unit the next morning but fantastic memories!

We really need a "wat" reaction.

I was there, it was insane time never to be replicated.

Cheapest DVD player in the country but when it hit, I think I got A Bugs Life and Inspector Gadget or some shit.

Fireworks PS2 game and Dynasty Warriors.

Yeah this was a great time. The PS2 thunder was kind of stolen by Dreamcast the year prior, as the console initially didn't look like much of an improvement over that. But it was still good. Many complained about the launch back then, PS2 had no games.

Well, TTT, RRV, SSX, Timesplitters, DoA2, R2R, Dynasty Warriors 2... maybe it was average by the standards from that era but it blows the PS5 launch to hell lol.

The first time I got a console at launch. Was so excited. Ordered from special reserve with silent scope, tekken tag, fifa 2001 and timesplitters

Launches were so much better without crossgen games/bc

2AM line up in freezing cold. They gave out numbers at around 6AM. Very civilized. I was with a group of 5 or 6 people and we all get extremely sick. Good timing for a few days off work.

My first big purchase was a ps2 but I got one after the first big price drop. It was $699 I think. Didn't have the time to play it. PS3 was different I played the crap out of it. I'd consider buying a new one too. Because I still have a heap of games for it.

I still have my day one PS2 ! It's still working (which is rare). I remember getting is along with SSX, I hesitated a lot between this and Ridge Racer V since I'm a fan but SSX was a lot of fun so I regret nothing !

The launch in France was wild, people had to wait months to get one.

One thing about the PS2 that will always be amazing is that box:

After taking the world by storm with the first PS, they release their second console wrapped on on this blue box and a huge logo. All that was needed and still my favorite.

Ah, the beginning of the "console scalper era" that still exists to this day. I remember these were selling for over $1K in U.S. post launch. The only major console since the NES that I didn't buy at launch, which was fine because I really loved my Dreamcast & the PS2 launch lineup was pretty lackluster.

You got that right it's fucking pathetic. The Mario party games are so gay and cringe. I didn't know that there was a Mario party game named jamboree.
If that is not gay and woke that's why the newer generations are so gay.

Could've just gotten a Dreamcast for much cheaper. It would take a while before the PS2 would get a good library of games.
I did that and got the PS2 a bit later when the price dropped by £100.

struck by seeing a store clerk dressed properly in slacks and a button-down shirt and with a proper employee haircut... I forget how most stores were still somewhat dignified in 2000, far cry from today

I own this box still. Along with a PS2 fat inside. I think the disc drive isn't up to snuff anymore but I don't hook it up anyway.
