RC Car transmitter/remote question

I dont know much about RC cars. My son has a couple toy ones nothing serious. He received one for his birthday which is actually pretty cool and fast.

Only issue is the transmitter is shit you have to be right next to it to control it.

I want to replace it with something better I know nothing about this. Its marked as 27 mhz but it seems that when i check on google there are a couple of frequencies used at or near 27.

How do I know what to buy and how do I know it has better range? And how can I be sure its the transmitter and not the receiver which is bad?

If it's just a basic RC car it's probably at 27.145 MHz, it's likely marked inside the car if you open it up. If it's just a toy car I'm not sure how much luck you'll have extending the range, but in principle you want a higher power transmitter, better antenna, higher power receiver etc.

How old is your kid? RC stuff can be a pretty big rabbit hole to fall into tbh. If you buy a more serious model you can buy ones that you assemble (and paint) yourself:

(if you buy a car like that it's not going to have range issues btw)

There are also nitro and gas powered cars you can get, but they're a bit more involved.

Honestly I had completely forgotten I ever had this hobby until this thread lol

He is only 4 so its not a huge deal as of now. I as well had a pretty bad ass battery powered car when i was younger with awesome suspension etc, but I never used it as much as i should have.

I know this can be a huge rabbit hole lol.
