Re-Evaluating games: Suikoden III

I am about 1/2 the way through Suikoden I and 1/4 the way through Suikoden II. Have never played the others - should I?

Because I got bored of Suikoden for awhile, and I know how everyone adores the shit out of II so I gave it a go.

I was actually looking forward to Suikoden III but due to no PAL release, I never got around to it till nowadays.. what confuses me the most is Suikoden IV getting a PAL release.

*takes off demi's crown of shit and plonks it on Konami Europe's head*

After the two PS1 games, Suikoden III's setting and story seem very somber, low-key, and untroubled by comparison. It's certainly a change of pace from having an insane warlord chase you halfway around the world destroying everything in his path.

Indeed. I really wish they'd bring the system back and improve upon it. More games need to allow you to play the game through the eyes of the villian after beating the game.

Yes! When I found out you could go through the eyes of the villian, it was like the best thing ever. I thought Suikoden III had some quirks, but I liked it a lot.

I also liked this game.

Admittedly, it would be improved if more of the dungeons were new areas rather than multiple treks through the same ones. But the trinity system was cool.

^ Camelot really pushed this in Shining Force 3, as well as Golden Sun (which wasn't as complex as their past effort I suppose)

I'd actually like to see an RPG based upon the hero turn into villain with mental issues believing he/she is in fact creating a better world when all they are doing is enslaving the population under his/her ruthless rule. Probably been done before complete with Darth Vader style references but it'd be interesting to say the least.

I got to the end of S3 and never ended up beating the boss. What happens at the end? Someone mind putting it in spoiler tags?

It's called FFVII, give or take.

Technically Sephiroth isn't a main character.. and Cloud goes from being a lonely child, through to enlisting in Shinra service and being delegated as a simple pawn, getting huge mental issues over this especially with Sephiroth igniting the entire town of Nibelheim within flames. His mother dies, he gets captured by Shinra, Mako is shoved through his entire system.. takes upon a dual personality complex and believes there is no such person as Zack until he rediscovers himself as a mere failed experiment with infusement of Jenova cells and finally vanquishes the demons inside himself when he trips into the Lifestream, gets more mental/physical poisoning then redeems his dreadful teenage existence by killing Sephiroth. End of story.

No good guy turns bad guy main hero in my books.

edit: Oh and if someone bitches about spoiler tags, you've had almost a decade to play this game. If you haven't and I just spoiled the characterisation that is Cloud Strife, then pat yourself on the back that you now don't have to troll through 40 hours of another RPG title.

O i c. I was wondering if there was any epilogue sort of sequence showing what happens to the different cities and people encountered through the game. Something like Skies of Arcadia if u played/finished it.

The intro music was one reason that kept me playing. III was my first Suikoden and I remember being heavily addicted and wanting to learn about all the characters, although i didn't enjoy the ending. It felt incomplete.

Always nice to see the Camelot love. What they did with the Shining Force III series and the Golden Sun series was great, and I will always hold out the hope that America will someday get Target: Child of Elbesem (Scenario 2) and Bulzome Rising (Scenario 3).

As to the situation you describe... how about the game we're discussing, Suikoden III? The villain of the game is a hero (an important character in both of the two prior Suikoden games) who decides through confusion and hubris to do something villainous that will kill countless people.

Murayama wanted to include a Sasarai POV but Konami didn't let him and he left Konami. Sasarai POV was replaced by a dog POV that's depressing in fact you can see where Murayama left the project right after finding the truth about the Flame Champion because the game goes downhill from there.

honestly, the best part of suiko 3 for me was the music on the grasslands as you went around. I used to sit for hours and let that loop behind me while i read a book or something.
And i wish that they had actually made an anime to go with that beautiful intro video.

Oh, and Hugo was awesome too. Can we hear it for dark skinned heroes in games that aren't retarded caricatures or thugs?

as for the manga, didnt they say in an authors note in book 1 that they were going to be changing a bunch from the game? I read the first two volumes but didnt follow through, since i really don't like Chris and co.

and i'm with that dude above. i have a save right at the last boss or thereabouts, but i never bothered to beat it. i dont even remember who it was.

All Suikoden games end with a long list of all the 108 characters and what happened to them afterwards.

He is a misunderstood hero. His actions will likely help the world, but unlike most people he's willing to sacrifice millions to do it.
Sounds like I have to get my hands on Suikoden III asap.

I have a question about the Suikoden series.
Can you transfer save game data between all five currently available titles?
Or is it just between 1 and 2, then 3, 4 and Tactics seperatly?

I ask as I have recently pre-ordered Suikoden Tactics (PAL), but then I foumd out it was linked to Suikoden 4. Do all the games link together?
If they do I think I'll cancel my preorder and buy all NTSC versions of the series.

I am pretty sure that you can link Suikoden II data onto Suikoden III - whether that depends on if you copy the data from your PSX memory card over to your PS2 memory card, I'd have no idea sorry.

linking 1-2 is a must. 2-3 gets you a few extras, but nothing worth writing home for. 3 and 4 don't link, but 4-tactics gets you the hero of 4 and his pal Snowe as unlockables.

I know there are few that think like me. But III was my favorite of the series.... however, I can't see myself playing again anytime soon...

Ummm I don't think anyone said this clearly.

If you got all 108 stars, then you get to play through the bad guys, luc's story. One of my favorite parts about the game.

Overall I loved Suikoden III. It definitely had it's flaws, but the trinity system was an awesome idea. I would love to see it done again, but improved upon.

I rented it from Gamefly and enjoyed it (it wasn't the best, but I liked it).

Overall, II is my favorite in the series. However V looks fantastic.
