RE4: Let the crow eating begin!

Posted at the playstation forums .
Taken directly from the new PSM RE4 preview.

Separate Ways :

- It is one mission, and takes around 5 hours to complete
- It is a separate mission to Assignment Ada
- Unlocked when you complete the main game
- Split over several levels that run parallel to the main game
- Explains plot points, like why the villagers leave when the bell rings
- Develops on the relationship between Luis and Ada, and explains her motives towards Leon
- Starts of exactly like Leon’s game (the village and church), but moves on to new areas that are not accessible to Leon (like an industrial level). There are 7 stages in all.
- Provides a new twist on the final fight with Saddler.
- The new areas are only accessible with the grappling gun (the one she uses to get away from the Village chief)
- The scenery is very repetitive
- The plot only explains the background of the main game and it’s characters, nothing new
- There is no merchant, so her weapons cannot be upgraded, but they are almost at max anyway.

Graphics -

+ The number of enemies on screen isn’t different from the Gamecube version
+ Very little slowdown
+ Leon’s hair bobs and moves just like in the Gamecube version
+ Virtually identical in every aspect

- Characters are less detailed, but only noticeable when up close
- Lighting is not as ‘rich’
- Explosions aren’t as ‘full’

New Weapons –

The PRL :

- It works by burning away the parasite and damaging the enemy (works well against the Regenerators )
- You have to charge up each shot.
- It is a wide spread weapon, like the shotgun
- You buy it from the Merchant around two-thirds in the game (it is not an unlockable weapon)

Ada’a new weapon :

They can’t say what it is, only it is ‘suitably feminine’ and ‘massively explosive’

There are new images , showing :

- The chainsaw villager’s chainsaws are now on fire
- One of Leon’s new costumes is a 1930’s gangster suit (complete with Trilby and silk scarf)
- Ada in furnace room (the one before the knife fight QTE)
- Ada in the tunnel where Ashley drives the bulldozer (you can see the enemy’s truck on fire)
- Ada in a new part of the castle
- The cabin fight with Luis (the interior of the cabin looks ‘flat’, but Luis looks the same)
- The fight with the Village Chief (Very little smoke, and the chief looks less ‘fleshy’ than in the Gamecube fight)

How it plays –

L1 - Knife
R1 - Aim
Triangle – Map
Square – Run
R1 + X – Shoot
R1 + Square – Reload
Start or R3 – Menu

They also say it handles just like the Gamecube version.

There is also an interview with Masachika Kawata (the man behind the PS2 conversion)

PSM2 : How were you able to get the game looking as good as the Gamecube version ?

MK : RE4 was created using the full range of drawing capability of the Gamecube. The reason why the PS2 could perform as well as the Gamecube was that the programmers and designers analyzed the hardware very thoroughly in order to convert the code without cutting quality, and they succeeded the aptitude of the material and leveled up the processing capability. However, in the beginning I did not think we would be able to attain such a high quality. I feel very proud that we’ve managed to do such an accurate representation.

PSM2 : What inspired Leon’s new laser gun ?

MK : Although various weapons were up for the pick, we decided on a laser gun because this time around we wanted to create a weapon with a different kind of image.

PSM2 : What other ideas did you have for new weapons ? Why were they discarded ?

MK : We had an idea for a chainsaw, but it was scraped because it was too brutal for a character like Leon .

PSM2 : What is your favorite RE monster and why ?

MK : I always liked the ‘zombie’. They were always quite shocking to me, and was the most unique character to RE. Unfortunately, they do not appear in RE4.

PSM2 : What aspects of the PS2 conversion are you most proud of ?

MK : I am most proud of the fact we could import all the fascinating aspects of RE4 without detracting from the essence of the game and providing PS2 owners with the best possible experience .

PSM2 : What are you most excited about in the PS2 exclusive ‘Separate Ways’ mission ?

MK : What I like the most is that players can experience the fun of knowing what’s going on in the background of the main story from Ada’s perspective

PSM2 : How did Ada survive RE2 ? Is she Hunnigan ? And why does she wear that dress ?

MK : Ada and Hunnigan are in no way related, they are different people . The other answers are secrets I’m afraid.

It's good to be a multi-platform gamer. No waiting as well as more Resident Evil 4 lovin' down the line.

5 hours of story linked gameplay? Yes please!

Yeah, I took the big chance and waited.
It almost killed me, but I'm kinda glad I waited.

I was worried the game would come out like crap and then I would have went and picked up a Gamecube and copy of RE4 just to get the full experience. It would have ruined me if I got the PS2 version and it was so inferior I actually hated the game.

hmmm, suitably feminine and massively explosive....the elusive female orgasm????

Uh uh uhhh.. *shakes finger at you*

Don't forget PS2 version has Anamorphic Widescreen.

Well, there is a downside...no time and money. Trying to play one console is hard enough but 3 takes the cake and then there is the handhelds...sheesh!

As for RE4 I'm glad it's turning out so well, it was almost to the point I it seemed people wanted it to look like the worst thing ever, but now it's one of the most amazing ports I've seen, makes me wonder how much more they could have done from the ground up for PS2 if it wasn't a port.

More people need to play this game! It's a damn nice way to end for PS2's last year before PS3 arrives.

Sounds great. The graphic whore in me wishes these bonuses would make a re release on the GameCube version, or heck pass the goodness onto the Xbox even. But I can always pick up the PS2 release later so it's not a big deal. These are truely some nice extras for folks who plan to buy this game again.

Then clearly this is the most definitive game ever in existance.

Leon is weaksauce.

This is shapping up to look really nice. The video in the other thread looked great and anyone who hasn't had the MASSIVE PLEASURE of playing this game should do so with the PS2 version.

Would have liked to be able to jump straight into Ada's missions, but i'm sure i won't lose any sleep having to play through the awesomeness again.

I was hoping for a secondary weapon button since the PS2 has an extra shoulder button, seems like a missed oppurtunity. Maybe for RE5 perhaps, but that is so far away.

Wait, why is there a call for crow-eating?

For what it's worth, I'm still glad I played the GameCube version.

-At the time, there were no good games I wanted to play, so RE4 (and later God of War) were probably the only two games I played all Winter.
-Took me about 30 hours to beat the game, and by the time I had, I didn't have ANY energy left in me to play through Ada or much of Mercenaries... enough was enough. I don't think the game NEEDS bonus content.
-The graphics are no better than the Cube version, all I can tell is that they're not as much worse as everyone was bracing for. They're in fact very very close, which is great news for Capcom and the RE series if it results in this game selling well, regardless of platform. If RE5 goes back to the traditional style, then I'll be eating cyanide, not crow.

Sounds like it'll be a grenade that lets you nag the enemy to death. Am I right fellas?! Eh eh!?

"Sounds like it'll be a grenade that lets you nag the enemy to death. Am I right fellas?! Eh eh!?"

naa - the "new weapon" just means that when you try and look at the map, the thing spins randomly and has nothing but massive question marks all over it.

shouldnt the slowdown be a negative? or was there slowdown in the gc version?

I don't remember any slowdown. O_o

I recall a little itty bit bit, but only because I had my face planted 2 inches from the screen on account of how gorgeous a scene it was.

Nice, the new Assignment Ada sounds.... worthwhile! Too bad that you have to beat the game to unlock it since I would have rented the PS2 version just for it. Though maybe I can burn through the normal game... yet again.

Very well said.

How little are we talking about? Like a dip from 30 FPS to 28.5 FPS?

It isnt really plus points directly compared to the GC version. Its more of plus points compared to your own expectation.

What the hell does this have anything to do with what I was saying? O_o

I think you quoted the wrong person.

thats really foolish. its like saying. hay guys. good news. theres barely any slowdown in the port of MGS2 for xbox!~!!

It doesnt sound like this will be worse than the GC version. They mentioned that there will be some slowdown right? but that shouldnt effect the game too much. The extra mission is great as well.

um... nevermind.

Given that supposedly the framerate isnt as steady as the GC version reported by numerous souces, that is a logical explanation IMO. And comparing MGS2 on Xbox is not fair as most people I believe were expecting an upgraded version and not a downgraded one wich the final product was.

well, i dont know how much stock we can put in PSM's 'very little slowdown' . but either way, any slowdown is not a positive. there is no way around it.

everyone knows that the ps2 is a beast when it comes to particle systems.. and with mgs2 being coded specifically for the strengths of the ps2.. i believe that its the exact same situation.

okay then. how about this comparison. hey guys.. good news!! the gc port of splinter cell has very little slow down. awesome!

might as well add the rest of the negatives to the positive side since many people expected the ps2 version to be massively downgraded.

The PS2 version looks like it will be pretty cool, though having just beat RE4, I havnt actualy played through the Assignment Ada mission yet, I tryed it a minute but wasnt intrested in continuing at the time. The fact you cant upgrade your weapons in the Ada missions on PS2 sucks I think.

Still I am suprised to see how good the game is looking on PS2, though I dont know if it's worth it for me to buy it again.

Also could someone tell me what the acronym QTE stands for? I know it's in relation to the dodging moves in cinimas, and some parts of gameplay.

RE4... best game this gen

However, after playing it through 5 (or is it 6?) times, Assignment Ada twice and putting about 30 hours in to Mercs mode, I doubt I can find the enthusiasm to play this anymore. Maybe I'll buy it for the extras in a couple of years when it's cheap.

Anyway, you non-GC people will still have a great time without me joining the party ^ ^

It would have been good news for the Cube fans who wanted to buy SC, IF it was indeed a port from the Xbox version, but it was the severely downgraded PS2 version.
Put the Cube version of SC next to the Xbox version and it's a much and much bigger difference than RE4 PS2 <-----> RE4 GC

DAMAGE CONTROL TIME:

An extra 5 hour mission? Who wants to play another 5 hours?! The game is so long you already get your money's worth....no need for all this superfluous content! And you have to beat the game to unlock it! Another 35 hours just for a little bit of extra stuff is not worth it!

New weapons? They only make the game easier! LOLZ weaksauce gamer version!

Very little slowdown? That means there is some slowdown! Slowdown is awful!

They don't tell you how Ada survived RE2 or why she wears that dress? What's the point if they are not going to expand on the story?!

Did I miss any angles? ;)

RE4 always had slowdown in one particular place for me: when you enter the valley after the chief's hut (chapter 1-2, right?).

Thats not what sucks. What sucks is that you won't be able to trade in your weapons for new ones just in case you want to experience her missions with different weapons. I figured they would gank us on the merchant and I bet it is something that would take all of 4 or 5 days to implement. I beat Leon's mission with nothing but an upgraded Red9 once and it was ridiculous fun. They really are limiting how many times I will want to play through the expanded Assignment Ada to maybe once. Do we know if she will even have a knife yet?

And would it kill them to give us ONE new Mercenarie Level? Or maybe there are other bonuses in the game that we don't even know about yet.

Great, now let me do the Sony fans!!! --

Makes imaginary list short of any practical inspiration

LOL!

Imaginary list? I am only shamed that half the rhetorical moves listed have already been tried in this very thread....

"any slowdown is not a positive. there is no way around it."

"I didn't have ANY energy left in me to play through Ada or much of Mercenaries... enough was enough. I don't think the game NEEDS bonus content."
