On the japanese RE4 site it says: planned for winter release, but on the american site it says: 2005.

So why doesn't it say winter release on the american site also since January 11th is winter?

Well it could mean nothing, but it sounds fishy. Hopefully it's not a delay.

If you ask me, they should delay the US release... January is a terrible time to launch the game.

I'm guessing that RE4 will at least be pushed back until March, which is a much better month to release a game than January.

RE2 launched in january, and, IIRC, is the best selling game in the franchise.

December 31, 1997. Most stores didn't get it in until January 1st.

Winter 2004, although they changed it to just Winter.

Nintendo's website still has it on Jan. 11 and they're usually accurate about these things.
