What a bunsh of wankers you. No one would complain if it said "LA Lakers/NY Yankees to sign 7-year old".

There are more teams BIGGER than those in your own puny little country :mad

Relatedly, what is the significance of the name "Real Madrid"? It just makes me think of things like "The Real Ghostbusters".

'Real' is the spanish word for royal. Madrid got a royal status granted by the Spanish king a long time ago. You should pronounce it like 'Ray-all Madrid'. :)

Actually my country is bigger than yours. Then there's the whole Lakers/Yankee connection which I'm not understanding.

A++++ post would read again

actually, i think a lot of people would voice their complaints about a sports orginzation buying the rights of a *7* year old.

it's ridiculous.

Ahh, thanks. I tried using Babelfish, but it told me real = real.

Aaahhh, it's early (8:00 AM). Just woke up :/

And HalfPastNoon, he hasn't got a contract or anything. UEFA states that you can only offer players over the age of 16 a paying contract. I reckon that he will just follow the Real school while growing up. One that will probably make him into a superstar. This is no different from a really bright kid going to Harvard at a rediculously young age.

Well, that's where you're wrong. There are a ton of people over here who bitch about players coming out of high school and forsaking college to join the NBA ranks, something that isn't an issue with basketball overseas, tennis, soccer, auto racing, or almost every other professional and amatuer sport. Hell, Freddy Adu signing with the MLS club DC United as a 14 year old wasn't seen as a big deal, yet the media always squawks over basketball players going early (and that's pretty much the only league that takes criticism for it). It's really quite mystifying.

The whole US sports system if FUBAR'ed IMO. Drafting (WTF!!), Salary caps and stuff.

The whole "go to College before professional league" is also a bunch of crap. Not something you can change as it starts very early (teams are linked to schools)

"He uses both feet and is pretty skilful — he can float a free kick like Beckham. And his ball control is fantastic."
Quite astounding if the claims are true, I'm 21 and still can't get ball control down perfectly as of yet.. then again I am a defender and trying to do what a midfielder/striker does is kinda hard at first.

It'd be good for England itself if Real can keep pumping this little kid with iron.

Don't things like this lower team morale? I can't imagine an older player being all too enthused about a seven year old being on the same team.

So retarded to move your 7 year old son (and younger daughter by the looks of things) to Spain when there are perfectly good (excellent even) football academies here that could teach the boy and not detrement the education & social well-being of the 2 children (not saying spain sucks or anything, just moving to another country at such a young age has got to be tough).

I disagree. Better to do it at a young age before he has developed many would-be lasting relationships. Also will allow him to grow up in a situation where he can become bilingual easier which would be very valuable.

Erm... ever heard of a thing called youth teams?!

If he's as good as the claims are, he will play for the Real we know when he's 17+. Real is known for it's great youth-teams and football education.

So Sad. Children like him have no real childhood. Sports is all they know growing up. When they are not eating, sleeping, and studying they are training for their sport. They almost never get to do what they want to do, because their is no time. They must constantly train. I saw a video about gymnast and figure skaters, and in the US and around the world these children are trained from about the time they can walk. Their sport is their life. I am sure it will be the same for this boy. He wont know a life outside of soccer. Very Sad.

Why are you being so defensive? Calm the f*ck down. Just accept that most American people don't give a sh*t about soccer and move on with your life. The fact that most American people don't care about soccer doesn't take anything away from the status of professional soccer in other countries around the world.

Also, since when was the United States of America a "puny little country?"

I don't understand this. What is so great about a 'normal' childhood? I'm sure most kids would love to trade places with Niall Mason if they had the opportunity to.

Um...what?

Salary caps are there to keep the league competitive. Drafting is there so that teams that did shitty the year before get first dibs on the best new talent.

And I really don't understand your reasoning behind hating the college teams. The biggest reason they don't go professional first is because of the difference between high school, college, and professional. The speed, talent, and physical difference between each of those development periods is gigantic.

EDIT: Oh, and if the Yankees or the Lakers actually signed a 7 year old, the media would go apeshit and have graphics that say things like "Child labor in sports" with dramatic music. Steinbrenner or Jerry Buss (owner of the Lakers) would just get slaughtered.

Better to not do it all untill he's old enough to make the decision for himself. Theres no reason at all for him to go to spain.

I thought they signed a 7 year old to play on the official team, but if you read the article, they only signed him up for their little training school. Big deal?

Dont this people know that once he starts growing he could loose his skills? He can become slow and clumsy. You never know what a kid can develop into.

This article is biased towards England, and the fact that Real Madrid had to basically bend their own rules to take him in under their wing is satisfaction enough. Basically they're trying to herald this little kid as the next Beckham, who.. as slow as piss he can be, has an amazing right foot that still boggles me at times.

Well, I'm not an American and I follow the EPL. However, it does seem to me that the various US professional sports leagues seem to be in a much better financial state than most of the major football leagues in Europe. And thats probably because of the way their system is set up......

umm, no, it's called keeping the league competitive. dynasties=ugh

:lol Nonsense...leagues often thrive when dynasties are around. All people ever talk about when referring to the history of the various leagues are the Yankees, Lakers, Celtics, Canadiens, Oilers, Cowboys and Steelers dynasties. On the other hand nobody gives a shit about some one year wonder, in terms of their place in history, unless it was a completely dominating team like the '85 Bears (but again, there was no doubt who the best team that year was).

I find it more interesting seeing a few very strong teams running shit for a few years, then a glut of 8-8 teams with one of 'em getting lucky and going to the big show. Many call it competitive balance...I call it mediocrity. And it can bite me.

Unless it's my team of course...then it's fine!
