Realtime Worlds, a leading independent video game developer, today announced that it has raised $50 million USD in Series B funding. Maverick Capital, the renowned investment firm founded by Lee Ainslie, led the new investment round with existing investor New Enterprise Associates and WPP, a world leader in marketing communications services. The Series B investment will support Realtime Worlds' continued growth and expansion as the company develops new creative properties and brings innovative online gaming experiences to market.

"Securing funding of this size from partners that are leading the financial and marketing communications industries further affirms Realtime Worlds' position as one of the most creative, respected and successful game development companies in the world," said David Jones, founder and CEO, Realtime Worlds. "Since our founding, we have been fortunate to have some of the gaming industry's top creative talent crafting amazing, groundbreaking interactive entertainment products. With this new infusion of capital, Realtime Worlds is poised to deliver new original experiences to gamers around the globe and to push the boundaries of online gaming."

That's alot of money. Think it's all going towards APB?

What's interesting is that they were able to get that much VC funding without having to crawl to any of the console manufacturers. I think we're going to see more and more VC money funding projects, which is good for everyone, as it opens the world to more multiplat games, and lets devs do what they want without having to scrape before their console masters.

Investors moneyhatting games for multi-platform non-exclusivity.

I hope they use the money wisely if thats what its going towards then. APB looks great in a number of ways, but if it stays in its current form then I can't see it keeping my attention like GTA IV and Crackdown will, let alone other great MMORPGs.

They deserve all of that money after making the masterpiece that was Crackdown.

Now we just need a Crackdown 2 within the next 5 years. :(

They will need to make a PS360 game to make it a worthy investment.

APB is already announced for the 360 and PC, which should more than recoup their investment if it sells well, but I suspect that they'd love to put it on the PS3 as well. The nice thing about taking VC money is it means not having to be exclusive.

Indeed. Crackdown 2 needs to be made even if they have to hand it over a to a new developer.
