I'm looking for a small, reasonably priced camera to take simple pictures. Should be point and click, easy to carry around, sturdy, etc. Also, I need it by Friday morning, so it would really help if I could find it locally for a decent price. It would help if it were really small, because large pieces of technology really cramp my style, dudes. What it doesn't need is super insanely accurate color, interchangeable lenses, etc. It's not that I believe in buying shoddy product, but I'm about as far from a professional photographer as it gets. I just need it to take pictures of things like stupid potholes that kill my tires, walls that need to be repainted (so that I can coordinate the new color with someone remotely), other people (so that I can put them on my hitlist/wall collage with sniper sights drawn over their head in red crayon), etc.

target price: a couple hundred (or more if your target product kicks some ass)

tia lol am i rite???

ps, the things i appreciate most are stupid gadgethead features. are there any cameras with satellite navigation yet?

I can't think of anything off hand, but one of the better camera's you can buy right now for any price are Canon's. That's coming from a Nikon whore as well.

You probably already know about it, but here's a great site: Digital Photography Review

Awesome, awesome site with reviews a'plenty and user forums if you like to argue about cameras. :)

I got a A95 last month.

After taxes, a 512 MB card and rechargeable batteries it came out to nearly $400.

I kind of regret buying it for that reason, but it's a good camera.

BTW, my buddy at work bought a Canon Digital Rebel (Digital SLR); and it takes awesome pics. You'd have to pay ~$600-$800 for one of those puppies though.

this is true. i didn't expect everyone to rec the exact same product, though. i'm going to run to fry's to check out what they have and beat up the samples.

That sounds too high man. I bought the same camera, 512MB card, and batteries and it came to less than 340 for me.

I am guessing you got killed on the card, I found a deal on and got a 512 CF card for under 40 dollars and the rechargeable batteries were free with a rebate at Staples. :)

I like my Canon A95 a lot, but Dark's new Sony P200 is pretty damn nice as well(7.1 for under $400).

Won't have no Sony digicam myself.

Canon till death!

Any decent camaras under 100 buck and uses SD-cards? I want to give it to my young niece as a present(she's in 8th grade).

Found a nice deal for a 7MP camera.

From another forum, copy and paste.

Dell Home has the Canon Powershot SD500 7MP Digital Elph Camera with 3x Optical Zoom for $499 + $1 padding - automatic 15% off - $60 off $500 code D20R71CMG68QTR (Exp 07/07, 5000 uses) = $365 with Free Shipping.

Hope this isn't overkill. I can simply direct-link if so.

Canon A95
All shots were taken in auto-mode, but have been resized automatically by Photobucket.
The only one that used a flash was the plate of food.

I just bought a camera today, it's an Emprex 3 megapixel digital camera. I got it at fry's for 79.99. Here's the link to what it is.http://www.netaffilia.com/ad/electronics/frys/i/2005/07/01/11205.html It's super light and thin and small, so I like that, but I cannot find a single piece of information about it online! I took some pictures and they turned out ok, but it was kinda dark so I want to take some during the day to try it out. If anyone can tell me if it's any good (I don't know much about camera's) I would appreciate it, because I can still return it. I bought a 256 mb sd card to go with it. Basically I love how small it is, I can take it around whenever I want. I just don't see how there can't be ANYTHING about it online. It's not even on Emprex's website. www.emprex.com

It's about the size of an iPod

I am really tempted to buy this, only thing stopping me is the lack of information on it. Can you post some sample pics?

I second Phoenix's recommendation of the Canon Powershot S2 IS or S1 IS. I just bought the S2 and am very satisfied. The only reason I might not recommend it is if you're intent on getting a "pocketable" camera. Here are some shots I got on the day before the 4th:

Good luck choosing!

i'm going to borrow a friend's camera with the wall thing, but i'm still throwing around the idea of buying one. front runners right now are probably the A95, SD500 (that's a damn good price), S2 IS.

what's really amazing me is just how far digital cameras have come. i still remember the first gen quickcam and mavicas. really, amazing stuff.

bumped because i never managed to buy one, but i have new requirements!

i'm looking for a pocketable camera with good macro, AA batteries, and SD media, 4MP+, good low-light and sturdy.

also i have to be able to find it at best buy/circuit city/costco/target/fry's by tomorrow (farter am crying)

i did check out an A95 at fry's, and it's just about the largest i could work with. the elphs look nice except they don't seem to be so highly regarded at dpreview

price is probably around 400 max, although i realize that the whole package (incl. mem card) will probably run me 500. i'm not a very serious or enthusiastic photographer, so i guess image quality isn't a huge thing (i do care about getting clearer pictures of small/dark things though, as there is a large amount of utility in these kinds of pictures), but i hate spending money on crap (it was a life lesson from my grandmother!!).

so anyways, i like the A95, but from the dpreview.com review it didn't seem like it had the greatest macro? and it takes CF (although i guess i could live with that).

also are the dumb store warranties that cc/bb/etc sell worth buying these days? are they still no-hassle replacement plans?

Other cameras to consider:
Sony P200
Fuji F10 (It's got a GREAT sensor)

Go to imaging-resource and check out the comparometer. I posted this in another thread but I think Canons give the best skin tones.

Get a Canon "."

IAWTP.

Get a Canon or Olympus if you want great image quality.

I would only get a Sony if portability and looks were the most important features to me. Picture quality wise, their cameras don't seem to be same league as Canon.

thanks for all the help, guys. i bought a canon S2 IS because my mom is a huge photography snob and i have no willpower. i plan on trading it with her for a slightly used konica z3
