Here's the history:

I got my first mp3 player long time ago. It was a MPIO FD100 and I've been pleased with it, but the shittiness of its software and the storage limit made me buy a cheap 1 GB player a few months ago. Everything was fine until a high-speed train worker stole it (Chitta's PSP all over again) and had to go back to my old FD100 without success. The software is plain bonkers. It was stupid and unintuitive, prone to crash and whatever you can imagine but since I installed SP2 the fucker doesn't even want to work with the mp3 player plugged, so I'm trashing it.

Now I need a new mp3 player, and I want it with these features:

-1 GB (at least)
-Good sound quality
-NO APPLE
-Under €150
-Built-in radio
-Durable

Pluses:

-OLED display
-Built-in USB plug

What are your recommendations?

is beloved, despite what anyone might say
Why not Apple? Being a longtime PC user I never much cared for Apple, but I got an iPod for Xmas (the 20gig one) and I'm totally enamored by it. Decent software (after upgrading), lots of 3rd party accessories, sleek and portable, seems pretty durable (it's withstanded me being my usual spastic self and dropping it on the groud a number of times)... plus the awesomeness of the scroll wheel (this is what sold me and quite a few people on it - especially if you have a lot of MP3s). There's a reason why iPods are so highly regarded, and it has nothing to do with being "trendy".

Bollocks.

There are many brands with better sounding products and selling more for less, plus I have beef with Apple for personal reasons. There is no way I am buying their overpriced products.

I'm one of the iRiver campaigners here.

Got a H140 and love it. So recommended from me. Firmware could be better, but Rockbox group are currently working on their own which is looking to be awesome so that's something to look forward to.

EDIT - Remind me to read the first posts requirements. :lol

iRiver offer that meet your requirements though afaik.

There are not many brands selling for less. 150 euro will get you a 1GB ipod shuffle. Or it will get you a 512MB Muvo with a tiny screen.

My previous 1GB player costed €99 @ MediaMarkt and had a large screen, a radio tuner, recording features and all the bells and whistles. You just have to look harder.

I am willing to pay a little more for a HD based player if necessary, but keep it on the €200 range then.

Edit:

With OLED display, necklace, line-in and all the usual for just €135

€150. Better looking and with OGG support

ok, then its just the UK getting owned, not the whole of Europe anymore :(

But you could get an ipod mini 4GB for 200.

I'm sorry - does that say 10GB or 1.0GB? Can't tell, too many artifcats.

If it says 10GB, then that is definitely an awesome alternative to an iPod or similar device. Smaller, too. And I'm sure battery life is longer.

The Cruzer Micro MP3 can use 1GB Cruzer Mini's? According to Sandisk's site it can only use the Micro sticks. I hope it's false information, I have a disk on key I won't mind taking with me to school with that instead of my iPod (yeah, I know the selection on the iPod is much better... but my friends like the iPod in a finger prints leaving kind of way :( )

"Hi-MDs are very expensive"

Uh, unless you guys overseas are getting raped by the dollar(and you're not), that's not quite true. I don't know how much it converts or if they keep the same price, but the Hi-MDs being released this month start at 140$US (with line-in even).

Doesn't Sony have a new flash based player coming out next month or so?

I tell you, I don't know how much will cost those Hi-MD, but the ones over here are in the €250-450 range. That's pretty expensive. I'd also like to stick with something that allows me to move data easily.

iaudio 5, one kick ass player. Sounds great, has a great EQ, voice recording, FM radio, supports mp3, wma, asf and ogg and also has dircet mp3 encoding. Oh and there are over a 1000 different colours for the backlight

That's the ugliest thing I've ever seen, looks like one of those handheld games that come free in a cereal box.

Talking about the Zen Micro? I really like them aesthetically.

My friend has one and they're a lot smaller than you imagine.

I saw a good Hi-MD player on clearance at Target for cheap the other day and I was really close to getting it, but I'm wondering if there plans to release Hi-MD with radio tuner any time soon...or if it's already out...

I don't want to buy it and then find out there's a tuner model I could have bought. :\

Yup

This is pretty small if you ask me. And not exactly ugly, although some pics are really asstacular. It looks much better in real life.

I had a mirco a few months back, the touch pad was way to sensitive, trying to select a specific song a bus was damn near impossible for me. Then I upgrading the firm-ware as that was suppose to correct the problem and the thing would no longer connect to my computer via the USB port.

On creative-labs forum quite a few people were having the same problem with no word from creative on why it was happening or when it would be fixed. Very disappointing.
