My definition of Emo as a general term tends to be ROCK styled. Most of the indie/popular crap I listen to has a lot of emotion in the lyrics already, because that in my mind makes a good song. Something that evokes only the emotion of anger and getting pissed off or whatever is popular these days is useless to me.

Been pleased with:

Rilo Kiley
Iron and Wine
Metric
Liz Phair (the stuff before her last album was really good)
Neko Case
The Stars
Arcade Fire (sorta melodramatic but quite different)
Aimee Mann (sorta mainstream but still most people dont know about her)

Try the following, both by the Wrens:

The Meadowlands
Secaucus

Both fit the bill pretty well if you ask me.

I don't much like calling it emo, because very little of the album really falls into the category, but the Meadowlands is my favorite album of the (half) decade for what it's worth.

I don't know if it counts as Indie, or emo.

But Summer in Abaddon by Pinbak has been on loop at my house for a few weeks.

Emo doesn't exist. I think it's an extension of lots of different forms of music- folk, indie, rock, punk.. it's just the majority of the songs are about love, lack thereof, and disappointment. But, if we're playing the emo game...

Bright Eyes
Mineral
Death Cab for Cutie
Bright Eyes
Rilo Kiley
Ok, seriously, Bright Eyes

As for indie rock:

The Arcade Fire
The Futureheads
Interpol
The Unicorns
Hot Snakes
The Wrens (Seacaucus > Meadowlands)
The Fiery Furnaces
The Thermals
Death From Above 1979
The Flaming Lips
And you might like The Decemberists. They're alright, but not the best.

If you guys don't agree with my placements, sorry :/

If you just download Dashboard Confessional's "So Impossible" EP featuring Dan Hoerner of Sunny Day Real Estate, you'll be set. It's a great EP, even by the haters' standards.

Also try Sunny Day's "How it feels to be something on"

"Emo doesn't exist. I think it's an extension of lots of different forms of music- folk, indie, rock, punk.."

Most people consider Emo a result of some post-hardcore/punk movements when they focused more on emotional singing and lyrics.

Sunny Day Real Estate, Rites of Spring, Policy of Three, etc. Some might say Fugazi, but I lump them in with just post-hardcore.

hot snakes and death from above are metal as far i'm concerned, its a shame metalheads only listen to the cheesy, highly technical and melodious stuff mostly.

anyway, i only listen to a bit of emo, and mostly stuff thats not too weird vocal wise. i cant handle stuff like my chemical romance, blood brothers for instance. what i do like are coheed and cambria and cursive. i think cursive is very fun to listen to, very melodious, short and tight arrangements. they rock.

as for indie...lost of stuff has already been mentioned, i second pinback, metric, iron and wine, interpol, flaming lips and stars. i'll add AC Newman, controller.controller, the organ, pixies and sonic outh on the rock side. the organ, junior boys, kings of convenience, the bravery, the faint on the pop side.

LISTEN TO THIS MAN! I was almost thinking that I was going to be the first to mention Bright Eyes. Bright Eyes can be disgustingly great.

nite: I think Hot Snakes are more in punk rock/alternative vein than metal, but it still sort of has that indie sound. I can see what you mean with DFA1979, though.

...thats not too weird vocal wise...Coheed and Cambria...

???????????

I didn't know we were adding Pixies and Sonic Youth to the list, but I guess it was indie gold... so I'd like to add Dinosaur Jr. and Ted Leo and The Pharmacists.

i meant screamo vocals i guess. he just sings in really high notes, their music is actually pretty standard heavy rock. as opposed to chemical romance and those types of bands who are too chaotic for my tastes.

Pedro the Lion, only 'emo' music i like. Download anything from him, it's all good. Try magazine, it's my fav track.

Some would say bands like Modest Mouse and Dismemberment Plan would fall under "emo"...I disagree, but those are both great bands anyway. Most people know MM by now, though not everyone has heard their slightly earlier stuff, like The Lonesome Crowded West, for example.

Emo is a term that came about in the late 80s because of a band called Rites of Spring. It's short for emotional hardcore. While most other hardcore bands of the 80s made music about politics and things of that nature, Rites of Spring sang about love and heartbreak and shit.

To be an emo band you have to play hardcore music and have emotional lyrics. Current emo bands are shit like My Chemical Romance, From First to Last, etc. etc.

Just because a band has emotional lyrics does not make it emo. They have to play hardcore, which is usually just really fast, simple, and agressive punk with maybe a bit of metal.

So yeah, if you want to listen to emo try shit like My Chemical Romance, From First to Last, or like The Starting Line.

Just curious. Did you give My Chemical Romance as much shit before they hit big? I Brought You My Bullets... was a decent album. Haven't heard much of the new one.

I don't really give them shit. I actually kind of like them, but I'm not really into any emo music. I wouldn't buy their album but if their video is on or they're on the radio I will listen to it.

It's not so much emo, but Matt Pond PA is a great indie group.

I only like one of their songs that I've heard, but the local record store owner pimps the hell out of their albums and they're playing a cheap show around here next month. I don't suppose you've seen them live? If so, is the show any good?
