I'm thinking along the lines of Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, and others of their style. Just some lounge-type jazz. Good for slow dancing or just relaxing. Are there any proper albums out there from that era, or are there only collections? Throw out some names so I can hop onto SoulSeek.

These days it seems like most jazz vocalists from that period are either issued in greatest-hits collections, or box sets that represent all the recordings from a label.

Sarah Vaughan and Billie Holiday are other vocalists you might be interested in.

This might be later than what you're looking for (it's late '50s), but my favorite mellow older jazz album is Relaxin' with the Miles Davis Quintet (it's a "proper album," not a compilation).

I suggest Miles Davis' Kind of Blue if you want something very laid back (If you going to hit up the p2p networks, I would look Blue in Green and Flamenco Sketches.)

I'm a big fan of Coltrane, so I would suggest Cresent. Much of his music is ultra intense (as a matter of fact, Love Supreme was done in the same year as Cresent), but Cresent is real change of pace.

Thelonius Monk had a nice album on Columbia records in which he plays mostly standards on his own, but I can't remember the name at the moment--I'll have to dig it out at home. But that would also be a nice choice because it's also ballard heavy.

edit: For some reason I missed the part about vocalists, but these are good choices if your just looking for something mellow.

Thievery Corporation put together a cool and eclectic jazz compilation called Sounds From The Verve Hi-Fi which you might like.

John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman.

I think that's the title of the album also. Really nice and relaxing... that guy's voice is so soothing.

I second the suggestion for Kind of Blue, its an amazing album. Time out by Brubeck is really horrible IMO.

I would recommend Nefertiti by Miles Davis. It was his second quintet that included Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams. Truly amazing stuff; slow, moody, with some really incredible arrangements.
