There's nothing else quite like Berserk, which makes it a doubly unique in a market that's rarely original.

That said, Lone Wolf and Cub and Samurai Executioner are intelligent, brutal, and cinematic, just without the fantasy element of Berserk.

Blade of the Immortal features more likeable characters and some great fights despite the fact that the main character cannot die by conventional means.

I recently re-read some Firefighter Daigo scans (in Chinese) that I have on my harddrive. It's just so pure fucking awesome. It's quite possibly the best series that I have ever read, and I think it has won a few awards.

Let me give you an idea of the series. There's a story arc in Volume 7 to 8 that talks about the elite Rescue Team entrance exams that literally made me break down in tears.

The arc deals with Daigo entering into an elite Rescue Team entrance exam - which is deemed as the "toughest athletic competition" in Japan. Unfortunately, Daigo spent the night before the exams fighting a moutain fire. In the mission, he almost lost his life - and was only luckily saved by the rain.

So with 3 hours until the exam, Daigo is completely exhausted, but his captain tells him - "A firefighter's life will always be like this" and tells him to head to the exam.

At the exams, we see Daigo struggle physically with the exercises. We also see his mental and emotional struggles - he thinks about the previous night, and that despite being a firefighter, he was only able to survive due to the forces of nature. As this mental anguish intensified, his physical 'push' also increased - and he came out 1st in a large part of the exams.

It sounds corny when I do a synopsis like this, but the storytelling is absolutely brilliant. The last component of the exam consists of a 1500m run... and Daigo juxtaposes this exam with an answer to his mental conflict, "If only I had outrun the fire, then I could have saved people's lives and survive without depending on the rain!"
So we are given images of him running in the fire and pushing himself to the utter limits at the trial.

I know that no one on the online community talks about this series - but afaik, Viz has translated a number of volumes, so you can grab it if you want.

The artist's name is Soda Masahito. He has another series out called "Subaru". It's about ballet dancing, and it's also fucking fantastic. But I don't think it's being carried in North America.

Please Please Please give Firefighter Daigo a try.

Btw this was licensed a while ago and the first volume will be out in May I think (or April... I don’t know). I just thought I'd mention this because you might want to wait if you don't like reading on your pc. I had all the volumes downloaded but the license news popped up just before I started lol.

Berserk - Vol. 6 should be coming out shortly...yea!
Blade of the Immortal - Currently up to Vol. 13...its not too bad, main character has been absent for awhile, doing side stories in the last few chapters.
Lone Wolf and Cub - I own the whole collection, currently on Vol. 3. It is awesome...probably my favorite right now.
Samurai Executioner - Only have Vol. 1-2...haven't gotten into it yet. It is made by the same 2 guys that did Lone Wolf and Cub, but I hear it isn't as good.
Vagabond - I love the novel Musashi, and the movies Samurai I, II and III w/ Toshiro Mifune. I only have the first 2 volumes...its good, but its basically the novel with pictures. It is ok, but I'm not getting anymore...I'm just going to re-read the novel again after I get through Taiko (which was written by the same author)

Sounds awesome, and I second the Nausicaa and Planetes vote.
