"As we were exploring Westerns, one of the main themes to emerge was the idea of movement, of journeying across the land. At the same time, we asked, 'What does the West mean?' Is it outlaws and gunfights in one-horse towns, or the conflict between America and Mexico, or the coming of modernity to the great plains?

We couldn't really decide, and so for this to be the complete Western, we needed all three of those environments in there."

XBOX 360 OR PS3 ?
Technically, both versions run great with only subtle differences between the two. Fanboys can use this comparison thread to discuss.
As for content, the PS3 version comes with an additional Gang Hideout and Outfit.

SPECIAL EDITION / LIMITED EDITION
Although there is no real collector's edition with a cowboy hat or something, there is however an edition with some extras.
In North America, it's named Special Edition and includes the game's soundtrack, as well as some of the pre-order bonuses.
In Europe, it's named Limited Edition, and also includes the soundtrack and all of the pre-order bonus content.

America, early 1900's. The era of the cowboy is coming to an end.

When federal agents threaten his family, former outlaw John Marston is sent across the American frontier to help bring the rule of law.
Experience intense gun battles, dramatic train robberies, bounty hunting and duels during a time of violent change.

"It's America. The birth of modern America. What was gained and what was lost.

From our perspective, this movement from some kind of violent freedom to some kind of situation of much more overt state control; the movement from the individual to a larger collective where you have a lot less individual control over your life, or at least it feels that way. Whether you have that control or not is not clear but I think that movement from a primitive time to a time where we can see enormous parallels with our own time is what we found interesting about that period."

-- Dan Houser

003_theworld2kzse.jpg

"I grew up in the foothills of gold-rush country in California and spent my summers camping in the mountains and deserts of the West. So these locations are very personal to me.

Visually, we wanted to push the theme of the dying of the Old West by showing the harshness of the environment: everything is sun-bleached and scorched, dirt and dust float in the air continually, grit and grime are in every corner of every room. Life back then was difficult, so we made it that even the buildings look as though they've lived a hard life. Along with layering dirt and grime everywhere, one of the things we did was keep the colour saturation of the world low.
Happy, bright colours tend to make for a light-hearted or fantasy experience, which was the polar-opposite of what I wanted to achieve. That isn't to say the game is black and white, but it does allow for the colourful moments to mean much more. For example, the sunsets in our game are the moments where we bring focus to the vastness and grandeur of the open landscape."

-- Daren Bader, Creative Director

003_themap3igw0.png

The map is roughly twice the size of San Andreas and three times the size of Grand Theft Auto IV's Liberty City.

NEW AUSTIN
♦ based on: New Mexico, Texas

New Austin is home to scattered townships and forts - but far from tamed. Savage outlaws and wild animals still roam the open spaces, and wary travelers share the newly cut roads with as many bandits as farmers. Trains and coaches move quickly between the larger towns, but a sidearm is a necessity when traveling by horseback.

NUEVO PARAISO
♦ based on: Mexico

Red soil, enormous mesas and scorching midday sun make passing through these lands an unforgettable journey. In quieter times, the locals are not likely to bother a stranger - but there is talk of a civil war brewing in the hills, and mounted army patrols are quick to extinguish any signs of trouble.

WEST ELIZABETH
♦ based on: Wyoming, Colorado

Home to the bustling Blackwater, one of the many modern, burgeoning new townships that sprung up across America in the dying days of the Old West.
West Elizabeth may provide a taste of early 20th century modernity, but also its fair share of wilderness and danger. From the wolves prowling the snows of Nekoti Rock to the fierce Grizzlies in the forests above Manzanita to the ruthless card sharks at the tables in Blackwater - traveling the North requires caution and wile.

003_transportationqgrje.png

Fun facts:

♦ You can fast travel from any campsite to any visited town.
♦ When you're stranded in the middle of nowhere, the game will make sure there's a wild horse around for you to capture.

Methods of transportation:

HORSE
Obviously! There is however quite a variety of breeds, with different personalities, speeds and stamina. Wild horses can be tamed.

♦ Horses auto-jump over obstacles, but aren't stupid and won't jump off cliffs.
♦ There are also mules and in MP even a Tijuana Zebra.

STAGECOACH
Stagecoaches and other horse-drawn used vehicles. Some towns have one that can be used as a taxi.

TRAIN
Some areas have a railroad network which you can use. Trains and taxi stagecoaches allow you to either enjoy the ride or skip the travel.

003_people5er8m.png

"It's always worth sitting at camp with random strangers, you never know what interesting stories you might hear. Some Mexican dude was just telling me about a prostitute he'd seen who could "shoot water out of her concha with the force of a hose.""

--Gary Whitta

POPULATION
♦ no NPC (non-playable character) is the same, their appearances are randomly generated
♦ hundreds of random events (which happen to NPCs as well)
♦ there are still native Americans, but not living in tipis anymore

TOWNS
♦ houses can be broken into, possessions can be stolen
♦ gangs can take over towns
♦ after you've eliminated every inhabitant, ghost towns will remain abandoned for two to three in-game days

GANG HIDEOUTS
♦ gang hideouts can be cleared out
♦ wanted posters to find and capture criminals dead or alive

004_thegamez2olp.jpg

"Rockstar has a very odd place in the industry because there's an audience who appreciates the way its games criticize our culture and there's an audience who just love running around and blowing things up. I think the first group will love to see Rockstar explore the mythology of the Old West, but it's hard to know if the second will find that as interesting."

-- Tom Bissell, author

Choices you make will affect your levels of Honor and Fame, changing the way townsfolk respond to you and gaining you the reputation of a well-respected and law-abiding gunslinger - or a notorious outlaw.

HONOR
Your Honor changes based on the choices you make. Behaving honorably by rescuing stranded travelers, helping townsfolk in need or choosing to capture instead of killing criminals for bounty will increase your Honor. Honorable men earn favorable discounts with merchants, and lawmen turn a blind eye to small crimes. You are of course always free to choose a dishonorable path instead; killing townsfolk, stealing horses and robbing banks will see your Honor plummet… but it might also make you rich.

FAME
The actions you take will also affect your Fame throughout the territories. Becoming more famous will have its rewards: people will come to you for help and greet you by name; shopkeepers will give you discounts, and new opportunities for work will open on the frontier. But a famous gunslinger attracts attention, and gunfighters will come out of the woodwork to challenge you to duels in the hope of making a name for themselves.

Free Roam brings the open-world experience to multiplayer for up-to-16 players, with the opportunity to form posses of up-to-8 to take on the world's gang hideouts, ambient challenges - and each other. Free Roam also gives players a living, breathing world instead of a generic game lobby - with the freedom to roam the open expanse, hunting or creating shootouts before heading into competitive game modes - and leveling up with every major action. With each level come new avatars, outfits, mounts, playlists and challenges.

GANG HIDEOUTS
Just like in the single-player experience, some areas of the multiplayer world are overrun by bandits. Gather up your posse or any other players in Free Roam, ride out to find the hideouts and take those scurrilous bandits down.

AMBIENT CHALLENGES
Are you a hunter, a survivalist, or a shootist? The entire multiplayer world is filled with ambient challenges. Whether alone, with other Free Roam players or with your posse, discover unmarked hunting areas to take down waves of deadly predators, track down rare fauna in Survivalist Challenges, or earn yourself the title of Public Enemy by marauding towns and taking on Law Enforcement.

006_competitive79m2a.png

Red Dead Redemption's competitive multiplayer serves up classic multiplayer match modes with a distinctly Western twist: every match starts with players eye-to-eye in a classic showdown. Experience team-based Gang matches, Free-For-All Shootouts and classic Capture The Bag modes in specially designed locations within Red Dead Redemption's vast and beautifully detailed open world.

CHALLENGES
Similar to the ambient challenges in Free Roam mode, the Competitive Multiplayer modes also offer challenges that will unlock experience points and other perks. Weapon-based challenges for getting a certain number of kills or headshots with a specific gun will earn you the golden version of that weapon and additional challenges will reward you with XP and a custom title for your gunslinger.

SHOOTOUT
Deathmatch, Western style. It's you versus everyone else - try not to die. Keep an eye out for better weapons scattered across the area and use Dead Eye pickups to refill your Dead Eye meter, helping you take down enemies quickly.

GOLD RUSH
Your priority is to grab as many bags of gold as you can find, and take them to the nearest chests - killing comes second. You can grab up to two bags of gold at once, but all that weight will slow you down.

GANG SHOOTOUT
Team Deathmatch on the frontier. Work with your team to pin down enemies and rack up kill streaks.

HOLD YOUR OWN
Infiltration and theft. Each team has a base and a bag. Steal the other team's bag and bring it to your base. In larger areas, strategic use of horses and ballistic weapons placements will keep opponents on their toes.

GRAB THE BAG
One bag, one chest, two teams. Stake your ground, and defend the chest until a bag appears. Once it arrives, grab it and take it to your base to score.

WALTON'S GOLD
Walton’s Gang have taken control of a mining camp rich with gold. Fight through the camp and load your mine cart with as much gold as you can carry and get out as fast as you can – Walton’s boys have rigged the place to blow!

THE RIVER
Ride a raft down river, taking out rebel encampments along the way until you reach the rebel stronghold of Nosalida and a final epic battle for the town’s massive weapons caches. Watch out for Gatling gun-equipped enemy rafts.

AMMUNITION
The Mexican Army has the town of Tesoro Azul under siege. Storm the gates under heavy cannon, Gatling gun and sniper fire to destroy the Mexican artillery placements.

THE KIDNAPPED GIRL

THE ESCAPE
You and your teammates must attack and steal a gold coach along with a wagon and a Gatling gun. Once acquired, you will be sent to turn them in to the American Army and then must clear out remaining resistance in the town of Tumbleweed. After clearing the town, prepare for an explosive standoff that will take you all the way to Mexico.

THE HERD
Cattle rustlers have taken control of Box Canyon. Fight your way in and wipe out the rustlers, then use teamwork to protect the herd as you lead them home to Armadillo while drawing heavy fire from snipers and reinforcements on horseback.

"How do you make things stand out in a world where the ground, the clothing and many people's skin tones are brown? Tricks with lighting and smoke. How do you make objects appear rugged and sun-warped? Forbid the use of straight lines. How do you make a horse move as realistically as a car in Grand Theft Auto? Record a real horse in a motion capture studio."

-- Ben Fritz | Los Angeles Times

I played the finished code for four hours last week and the first time I whistled for my horse and it galloped toward me, muscles rippling, utterly convincing animation (they motion captured a horse – on a treadmill) that was it, I was in. For the first ten minutes, I just trotted up and down the dusty streets of Armadillo, lapping up the perfectly replicated Western iconography; the lone rider slowly sauntering into town, the drunken gunmen lounging on the steps of the saloon, the prostitutes languidly promenading the balconies, the balls of tumbleweed blowing past…

-- Keith Stuart | guardian.co.uk

"In the more than 1,100 articles I have written for this newspaper since 1996, I have never before called anything a tour de force. Yet there is no more succinct and appropriate way to describe Red Dead Redemption. Rockstar rides again."

-- Seth Schiesel | The New York Times

SO IT'S LIKE GTA, BUT IN THE OLD WEST ?
In terms of basic gameplay (third person, open world, non-linear missions, etc.) it pretty much is.
The game was made by Rockstar San Diego though (Midtown Madness, Midnight Club, Smuggler's Run), not by the actual GTA-team, which is Rockstar North, located in Scotland.

IS IT COMING TO PC ?
Nobody knows. Previous Rockstar San Diego titles, such as Midnight Club and Smuggler's Run didn't get a PC-port, so don't get your hopes up.

SHOULD I PLAY RED DEAD REVOLVER FIRST ?
Not for the story, Red Dead Redemption is not a sequel.

Edit: Almost forgot, great OP!

Awesome OP! You sure put a lot work in it.

Is there any word, if there will be a trophy/achievement for hard difficulty?

Now that's a damn fine OP. This game went from a 'Might buy' to a "Must buy". Sounds like GTA4 but way more interesting.

Why oh why couldn't there be a PC version? :(

Great thread! Just watched Once Upon A Time In The West in anticipation of this game. Will be grabbing this game for sure, probably not in the time of release but pretty soon after. Gonna be reading this thread for impressions.

I noticed a slight mistake in the OP, the metacritic reviews both say PS3, when the other one should be 360. Not a big deal though. :D

They haven't said anything on it, it's just speculation. Though Port begging seems to be a bannable offense on gaf.

Actually watched The Proposition a few days ago. It's on Netflix Instant Stream in HD if you've got an xbox if anyone cares. Damn good film.

I'm waiting for the inevitable showdown in game between Goldrusher and Haunted. Even though Haunted didn't want to make the Official Thread. IT WAS YOUR DESTINY HAUNTED AND YOU TOSSED IT TO THE WAYSIDE!

Whats that heat or haze shimmery effect in the picture about the 'Photo' section. Is that all in game? Or is that photoshopped. Its cool if its in game.

Great Official Post. I'm super hyped. How could anybody forget that awesome movie 'Banditas'?

Goldrusher, Mik and whoever else worked on this OP, stellar work all around.

Can't wait for the release, I think I'll spend a lot of time in here. :D

I pre-ordered this from Walmart. How do I know what preorder bonus I get? Also, great OP. Can't wait to play this game.

I couldn't collaborate (I was in Spain and didn't bring my design stuff with me), so I think it's all Goldrusher's work.
