And now I will never see another movie at Regal Cinemas.

From the article:
“Security issues have become a daily part of our lives in America. Regal Entertainment Group wants our customers and staff to feel comfortable and safe when visiting or working in our theatres.”

and ...

"In a recent survey by research group C4, nearly 50% of moviegoers said they would pay $1 or more extra to support additional security measures in theaters. The issue for exhibitors is that installing metal detectors or arming security personnel could cost hundreds of thousands of dollars per location and would create problems in terms of seating people in a timely fashion."

This isn't about sneaking food in to the movies, either.

As long as its not a pat down, what do i care. check my bag. Put a wand around me. I dont care.

Because I don't want to feel like i'm going through the TSA to go see a fucking movie, is why. If some fucking idiot is going to jump into a movie theater and kill a bunch of people, he's going to do it regardless of some underpaid kid who is checking bags. Fuck this.

The fuck
The only way on earth you have a right to check my bag is if it's an advance screening
AMC for me it seems
for now

Doesn't affect me at all, but my sister was about to lay into the poor min wage stub kid for daring to ask to check her bag.

1. Its a lot less invasive than TSA
2. they are only checking for weapons and metallic objects.
3. This is going to be inevitable as long as gun culture is rampant.

You know most bag checks are stupid. Look at Universal studios. They always stop my wife and kids for the backpack but always wave me right thru. I could easily be concealing. Not only that but most barely even look in the bags. You can easily take a handgun apart and hide it wherever. Metal detectors etc would be a pain to deal with to go to the movies. I have been to one movie in like two years. I can keep forgoing it.

I get why they are doing this though. But prices are already a tad high for my taste let alone the hike this will cause.

The perception of safety, the actual checking process is a farce.

We do this in Australia for big events e.g. sports with 10,000s attending, generally it's such a cursory glance by security personnel who couldn't care less it hardly warrants the process at all. I agree something needs to be done but checking bags ain't the right answer at all.

Just last weekend I attended a football game and our bag has two zips got checked as all bag carriers do. The security guy only checked the one I zip section I opened already and he never even looked or asked about the second zip section or front pocket etc. They also don't search your person or clothing so what is the point exactly? Perception of safety is the answer.

What happens when they are checking the bag and they find like candy n stuff? Can you like not bring it in? Because yeah... that's going to make a lot of people angry. Lol.

They already had random spot checks for this exact reason. People pissed because they can't bring candy/food into a theatre will never cease to amaze me.

It's a rational move, which is very depressing. Although, what's the seventeen year old part-time employee checking bags gonna do if he finds an assault rifle or something?

They been doing that around my way for years. It was more random and for things like sneaking in food. Now I'm sure it's for weapons and things like that.

I'm fine with this. People want to feel safe. They better secure those emergency exits too. And as for sneaking in food, I don't care. I'll do it anyway and if I get caught I'll pay their wild prices for the security and see fewer movies.

Watching this from the outside is both hilarious and sad.

On one hand it's clearly a policy issue; having stringent, federal, heavily enforced laws on gun ownership would is clearly an answer to mass shootings, police violence, and gun violence in general.

But instead you see companies doing shit like this.

You don't understand why someone wouldn't want to pay over $15 bucks for the same food that is sold for $4 elsewhere?

Gonna have to start hiding my snacks in my shirt now. Sucks that you feel unsafe even going to the movies though.

If it's a metal detector who cares? Honesty this is such a non-issue. If you don't want to pay for Movie drinks or snacks I am sure you can wait a couple hours.

It sucks, but not as much as getting shot while watching Pixels and then having the whole world know you paid to see Pixels.

They can be secured from entering on the outside until some wacko sends a friend in to let him in.

Former Regal employee here. We did this for about a month after Aurora before dropping it because it pissed off customers and in all likelihood made no actual difference in terms of safety.

isn't it more effective to use a metal detector? And aren't most shooters men that don't carry bags?

I mean sure it slows things down, but this isn't really solving anything.

Sucks but I personally don't mind as much.

The regal cinemas near me is better in quality than the AMC so I'll still be going to it regardless.

Paying $4-6 for a $1 box of candy (That can be found for .75 or .90 at Big Lots or on sale) is crazy and seedy. I'd rather pay more to be able to better bring my own stuff in, or even better, I'd pay for a real dining experience. Thankfully, there are a couple theatres like this near where I live.
