Remember Tomb Raider? How about Street Fighter? Doom looks to join them...

"Originally, the $70 million film was supposed to be helmed by Enda McCallion. Later, he was replaced by Andrzej Bartkowiak. Screenwriter Dave Callahan claims "everyone was keen to keep the game's atmosphere", though there are some "minor" changes done to the film's concept: The monsters have nothing to do with hell, the plot is not taking place on Mars and "space marines" are not well "space marines" as their outfits are more like SWAT team members."

That's just part of what they are "improving" on this movie, it looks to be another great addition to the videogame-movie world. Oh and BloodRayne is awesome, I swear... :lol :(

I really don't understand why they do this, with comic books etc. as well. The people who are initially going to be most hyped for a movie are the fanbase. So why start of a publicity campaign with the sound of annoyed core fanbase decrying the changes.

It really is depressing, the way these directors take "artistic licence" pretty much in the wrong direction... Lets see:
Super Mario Brothers: do i need to?
Double Dragon:...
Tomb Raider: though not as much as others
Resident Evil: so much more they could have done... ROBOTIC nemesis? wtf
Street Fighter: again, why?
Uwe Boll: go away
Mortal Kombat: probably the best videogame movie i can think of, in terms of cohesiveness.
any other major things I'm missing?

RE's Tyrant wasn't a full robot.
regardless, they could electronically control him from anywhere apparently, and his mechanical sounding movements just struck me wrong.. then the whole "ALICE" project at the end... ugh

Tomb Raider was pretty faithful to the games. Only thing I can think of that was a bit out of keeping with the games was the big training robot in the first one.

Apart from one or two liberties RE was pretty faithful. Unfortunately being so based on Zombie B-movies in the first place meant it turned out fairly generic.

I think one of the big problems is that buying a videogame license is a business deal. You don't really have the directors/writers who actually have an understanding of the games they are converting to movies. It's not like say Peter Jackson and LoTR where the directors/writers were also deeply engrossed in their source material.

I'd like to think that maybe this means that as the new generation of film makers emerges that have grown up with games that it'll get better, but I'm not holding my breath.

There will be loads of shooting though, especially in the end where a large number of sequences will be shot purely in "first-person" perspective of the leading character (Karl Urban). The chainsaw and Bio Force Gun do appear in the film.
Ugh.

The Silent Hill movie, at least, has a chance of being good.

Pathetic really.

One of the most intresting concepts about DOOM the game was that it's a battle of technology going up against mythical doziens of hell. that's a great simple launching point for an action movie script....which is probably why Hollywood changed it to boring regular aliens vs mankind. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

which is probably why Hollywood changed it to boring regular aliens vs mankind.
Actually the saddest part is that this synopsis sounds even more trite then the actual game storyline... :\
If they were gonna make changes - make it an action comedy based on the comic like I suggested before. At least it would have a shot at being fun that way :P

The story follows eight marines, teleported into a command centre of a secret base on a remote planet. There, they learn that something strange is happening and soon monsters start to appear. The monsters aren't from hell, but rather people mutated by some nasty super-virus although the monsters look very similar to those in the game.

This could have been a decent Aliens clone with a decent twist. Battling overwhelming enemies FROM HELL would have been a nice twist. What is with this contrived virus shit?

One character is a technician called "Pinky" who has a cybernetic wheelchair thanks to a bad teleporting accident.

:lol :lol :lol

This is retarded. DOOM could be a decent action/horror flick if the producers actually had some balls and stuck with the "Hell" angle. Just imagine the horror possibilities of an invisible pinky!

Instead we have a mutant Stephen Hawking. Weaksauce.

Sounds horrible, but I'll probably still see it. I see all of the shitty movies based off of video games. Yes, I'll even go see Bloodrayne.

here one word which will explain the changes...

BUDGET

but honestly... a movie based on the actual source material of doom could easily be made into a great movie. they simply shouldn't call the movie doom anymore with all these changes.

The film has a $70 million budget. What is the budgetary difference between a monster from hell and a monster that looks like the one that came from hell but didn't? It's a superficial alteration that accomplishes nothing.

I can see it now.....

As long as it has that scene where he sees the blue armour and some health in a room that he can't get into, but then later he pulls a switch that raises one of the walls so he can make his way back and collect them, I'm happy.
