I don't know. The part of me that appreciates the spirit of the animal rights movements is kind of disgusted by this. However, the part of me that really, really, really likes James Bond movies is saying "Get me a large water tank, and string 007 upside down above it!"

Funded by the US Department of Defense, Jelle Atema wants to understand a shark's brain well enough to take it over -- to get it to obey commands to smell and sense what's going on in the water around it.

''I want to sit here in my office, call up Charlie Shark out in Hawaii, and say, 'Go follow that wake,' " said Atema, who splits his time between Boston University and the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole. Ultimately, he said, a shark could help the military by surveying hard-to-reach areas for dangerous chemicals or other hazards.

The shark is ideally suited for this research, he said, in part because it has a strikingly large nose.

Oh, I was thinking this was going to be about remote controlled robot sharks.. I was prepared to be amazed.

This I just think is silly.

They should just get to work on the robot sharks. (The laser attachments would be so easy to install)

in deep blue sea they had those wonderful 'robotic' sharks, which they hardly used... and opted for retarded looking CGI sharks for the hero action.
