Yuji Horii seemingly confirms Chrono Trigger Remake at Comicon in Naples

During an interview on Friday, Chrono Trigger writer Yuji Horii appeared to confirm the existence of a remake for the 1995 RPG. According to Reddit user df_tarocco_1, who was in attendance during the event, Horii "let this information slip" during the interview. Afterward, the host appeared to whisper something to Horii and covered his mouth.

According to another user who was in attendance, Horii "said something along the line of what you said and the interviewer said 'Wait, if that's true, this is big'. The translator asked for a confirmation to Horii who presumably understood that he shouldn't have said that and the translator commented: 'You have heard nothing.'"

First released in 1995 for the Super Nintendo, the game also saw ports to the original PlayStation in 1999 along with releases on PC, Nintendo DS, and even mobile. The game kickstarted the Chrono series, which has seen one main sequel in Chrono Cross.

It's always seemed weird that we haven't got anything Chrono related recently, given how beloved it is and how Square seems to be doing a remake/remaster of literally everything from the era right now. I think an HD-2D remake would be grand and not a full 3D remake where they screw it all up.

Giving it the same treatment as DQIII would be nice.
I'd also be down for a higher budget remake if it's done in a similar visual style to DQXI which really nailed that Toriyama look.

But please don't touch the story. Just give me a remake of the actual plot of the game. Not some convoluted parallel dimension BS.

Square will somehow manage to fuck it up if it's a "modern remake" aka FFVII R. If it's HD-2D there is more of a chance of being faithfully recreated

A SO2 style could work, although the original has a timeless look. I would hope it's all done in a single game though. Either way, I will likely get this day 1. I've played through chrono trigger maybe 20+ times over the years.

Edit.
Toriyama Anime style with cel shading could be cool. If GGStrive and DBFZ are anything to go by the tech is definitely there.

I'm almost done with the original on Vita. Not sure I will have the motivation to play through it again so soon. Bad timing on my part

Don't trust them at all to make a competent Chrono Trigger remake at this point. Should be a no brainer, but they don't seem to believe in turn based combat anymore and their art direction is seriously lacking these days even with their 2D-HD games.

I'd be more than happy with a Chrono Trigger game that looked like DQ8.

A big reason why my backlog is so big is because I wait for the best time to play games and the best version of games.

I bought Persona 4 on sale (twice). First on PC, but then the PS4 port came out, and I preferred to play it there (there was no cross progression). Because of the lack of cross progression and how muddy the beginning of the game is, I really struggled to play it and by the time I wanted to give it a shot Persona 3 reload was announced and I realized they would probably do Persona 4 next, so I stopped playing it altogether and am just waiting for the remake.

Also waiting for Resident Evil 1 remake before I play RE2-4, even though I already own RE2 and RE3.

They kinda already hinted they were doing stuff for the 30th anniversary.
The fact the game can't be played on modern consoles is absurd.
I guess they'll do a remake similar to the recent Dragon Quest III HD-2D which was very successful without a huge budget.

Probably a HD-2D
Has to happen at somepoint. Hopefully a HD-2D without any major changes.
I'd prefer Star Ocean Second Story R style over HD-2D (yes S-E consider this something different from HD-2D even though it's similar)
Did people in this thread normally the DQ3 HD2D remake? The blueprint is right there. It'll be a banger.
I think Chrono Trigger deserves more than a HD-2D treatment (as do DQ3 and DQ1 & 2, tbh...).
More than hd2d? Whats wrong with you? Thats literally perfect for the game.
Please no more HD-2D slop. It's looked ugly ever since Octopath Traveller introduced the style.
2DHD would be great. Not interested in the FFVII treatment.

Someone made this is UE5 a while ago.

Please no Part 1, Part 2, Part 3 bullshit. I would like to play it to completion in my lifetime.
Just remaster this.

Do not add superfluous crap because you are a new generation and must add shit to make your mark!

The game is already as close to perfection for 90s JRPG. Just Oblivion it and not 7 Reamke it!

Look...it's one of my favorite games of all time, but we all know modern day Square Enix is a joke. Watch them fumble this.

You're doing yourself a disservice. Just play the game lol.

BARF. There is more bloom than in fucking oldblivion. Crono's face is GLOWING. Stop adding 3D post processing effects to 2D artwork, people!! It looks like shit every time!! I'm still pissed at square for ruining SO2R with this shit. I really hope they don't go this route. Stop nostalgia pandering and have the fuckin' balls to do a real remake.

This is the right answer.

DQ8 still looks fantastic at high resolutions, with no additional tweaks from PS2. Even with lower resolution textures, the artwork carries it a long, long way. I think this would be a perfect style for a CT remake. It's charming, it's crazy high fidelity compared to the original, but not so much that we get into like gross real life anime guy territory. CT has some pretty out there character designs that just would NOT work with the fidelity of say, FF7R.

I think it deserves more than HD-2D, yes. We know that Toriyama's art style works well in full 3D games, so why not go the extra mile? It's Chrono Trigger. If Square can burn money on those FF7 "remakes", surely they can also spend money on Chrono Trigger.

0 trust in modern Square. They'll probably fuck it up somehow.
They have had some quite good remasters and excellent 2D-HD games.

As long as they don't go "full retard" and go for full on modern game alas FFVII trilogy; a properly done remaster in the vein of Octopath 2, Star Ocean, DQIII, etc. it will do well. a

That looks like ass.

So much bloom and misused depth-of-field I can barely see what's going on.

Yup.

HD2D doesn't have to look like Octopath, but everyone applies the exact same art style to their HD2D games. The bloom is really getting out of control.

I mean… I could see it with the gap of projects currently. Surely they will monetize each era as DLC . watch…

It's gotta be a visual only remake in an HD-2D style or they'll mess it up.

Still though, I will squeal like a child when announced.
