US Rep. Bob Latta (R-Ohio) yesterday filed what his press release called "bipartisan legislation to keep [the] Internet open [and] accessible." What the bill actually would do is prevent the Federal Communications Commission from applying common carrier rules to Internet service providers, a step the FCC appears likely to take next month.

Pretty disgusting if you ask me. I guess that's all the lobbying money at work.

Am I correct in assuming Obama would veto something like this, given he supports net neutrality?

Re-introduce bill if old.

Saw this coming a mile away.

Wonder how "bipartisan" this really is.

Why do I feel like with Congress this inept and insane that Obama just MIGHT break the record for Veto of legislation?

Okay, he'd have to be FDR, but pretty damn close

He'd have to veto a little less than a bill a day. I don't think the Republicans can pass them that fast, lol.

Typical tactics of the right, but it's actually disgusting how misleading the language around this bill is.

This bill would do the exact opposite of what they say it will, and it's so obvious they have to know that. Ugh...

Bu-bu-but both parties are the same!

Seriously, though the GOP is such shit. Get your veto pants on, Mr. Obama. You're going to need them.

Alright politics aside let's quit it with the "bu-bu-but" stuff. It's like every thread at this point. I can just imagine a forum of conservatives being like "bu-bu-but" and being similarly condescending.

Thanks for the info, that's awesome. I had heard whispers, but never confirmation.

Hey Republicans, care to defend this?

Is is about the results of an election where they did well? If not then we won't see any in here.

As long as the pervasive "both parties are the same" keeps floating around here it's entirely relevant.

Oh course they are.

They couldn't be more transparent but people still just duck their heads in the sand.

Interesting.

Latta was one of "28 House members who lobbied the Federal Communications Commission to drop net neutrality after receiving more than twice the amount in campaign contributions from the broadband sector than the average for all House members. Latta, who has been a member of Congress since 2007, reportedly received $32,500 from political action committees representing AT&T and AT&T employees during his career, according to OpenSecrets' list of his top contributors. He received an additional $29,500 from the National Cable & Telecommunications Association and $21,000 from Time Warner Cable-linked interests. Verizon PACs and individuals gave him $16,000, the American Cable Association gave him $15,000, CenturyLink PACs gave him $11,400, and Comcast PACs gave him $11,000.

You don't say.

The worst thing is how these slimy politicians try and claim they're passing these laws for the good of the people. Get the fuck out of here.

Shameless.

Why are people so negative? It says it will keep the internet open? that's a good thing isnt it?

Or am I missing some fine print?

When it comes to the GOP, the only "people" they care about are Comcast, Time Warner, AT&T, Verizon, etc...

They only have corporate interests in mind. They don't give a fuck about the American people.

Hey Republicans, care to defend this?

Republican here.

There's no defending this. I would usually argue about free markets deciding what's best for our internet... but the telecom industries have a monopoly. So the free market rules don't apply and there's no more competition for telecom companies. Government needs to step in here and do something for the consumer.

Republicans in congress are in the pockets of big telecom companies. It really sucks.

Why are the Republicans constantly fighting hard to take away everything from people and give everything to the rich? Every single day they are robbing us of everything. I can't even get god damn Obamacare in my state because one of those assholes blocked Obamacare unless you make a certain amount. So I get to pay the fine so that the people with more money can get the service. Freakin tired of the Republicans crippling this nation every single day.

Last question: Why the hell are Americans voting for the Republicans? Do Americans like having all of their freedoms and services taken away from them?

So freaking frustrated from this crap. I'm 28 years old and I've been watching my country fall apart and yes I blame the Republicans. Bush started the economic downfall and the rest of the Republicans continue to chip away at any kind of service that is there to help people in need.

I live in a city that is rated 2nd most declining city in the entire country, jobs are almost unexistent. I can't even afford to live with my parents because that's how little I make and every single damn time Obama tries to get something done to help create jobs or improve the economy or prevent companies from crapping on consumers, the Republicans come sweeping in to stop all of it. Only the rich is allowed to have anything anymore I guess. Sigh... :/

EDIT: I got a little worked up. It's been a long night. It just seems like you almost never see Republicans pass a bill or attempt to help make like easier, improve education or the sciences or anything for that matter that isn't big business or war related. I mean if you scavenge the internet, you might find something here and there but the amount would be far less then what the Democrats try to get done. Just taking a small amount of the military budget would cover pretty much everything Obama and the Democrats have tried to get done.
