Resident Evil 4: the game it should have been

That game looks incredibly stiff.

The first person view was awesome... this is just way too similiar to the old ones.

why oh why did you change your mind, capcom?

after RE5 they should make this game, it looks so awesome :o

I was looking forward to this version very much also. Especially since it directly continued the umbrella storyline which I loved and was completely embedded with.

Still, at the same time, I truly do appreciate the decision to go with a completely different direction in the end and it was what the series needed.

The only thing I was dissapointed with in the end, was how they just kinda wrapped up the umbrella plot and tossed it away, especially after developing it across so many titles. I would have like to have seen a game that took place in the much talked about and infamous "european based headquarters"

What's so great about that old version?
Capcom took the right decision to change it imo. It looks like it was yet another reharsh but with better graphics. This series REALLY needed to get revamped and RE4 did just that. And what the fuck about killing ghosts with guns really...

Cool thing though, they could have used those baby dolls in RE4, they are quite scary.

That looks awesome, though I doubt it would've been as good as the current RE4. But damn do those graphics look good, even better than the current version.

Alot of people just wanted a horror game, Capcom basically dropped that entire aspect from RE4 in favor of an action game.

... this old version does look moody and very polished though. Makes you wonder what other goodies lay dorment on hard drives around the world.
(Also isn't that door texture borrowed from REmake? :P).

Sure. But what's horror really? RE1 was scary in the mean it gets me stressed, anxious, i don't know. I'm not "scared". RE4 gave me this feeling again. First RE to achieve it since RE1 for me.

i think RE4 did a pretty good job being the game of the generation and all, but i guess this would be cool too at some point

Ive seen this video before but hadnt noticed...

You know when the deer head falls? Leon turns with his flashlight, and the painting uses its moment in the light to change as well. Fun.

The smalle effects look better in that pic than they did in the final RE4.

The movement and lighting off his jacket is awesome.

Tired to see people saying 3.5 is better than 4 on both Chinese and English game forums.

Why dont people say 1.5 is better than 2?

I'd like to see Capcom bring back 1.5 not 3.5. because RE4 is a revolutionary masterpiece IMO.

While RE4 was awesome and all, it didn't really feel like a Resident Evil game.

I would have enjoyed the version in that video :(

Jeez, how far along with this version of RE4 were they before they scrapped it and started from the beginning?

I kind of like how it was a regular RE game and then goes into the over the shoulder view we know from the current version when he draws his gun.

Awesome graphics, flashlight mechanic, and environments. I don't know if I like all the lame scares. Why does the screen turn bluish when enemies appear? What's with those explosives he keeps throwing?

This looks like the same old shit we'd been playing for 8+ years with nicer graphics... seriously, look at the doll scene. Same awkward camera, wierd aiming, jerky movement as every other RE game. This is exactly what was killing the franchise. I love the flashlight and all, but you're batshit insane if you'd trade the RE4 experience for RE1 version 2.0.

If there's one thing that really needed to be taken from that version, it's some of the creepyness, that's the only thing RE4 was missing.

+1

Daaaaaaaaamn. I've never seen actual gameplay footage of the "old" RE4 until now. Holy crap, does that look awesome. Not to mention how downright creepy it looks. I would've enjoyed that version of RE4... Sure would have scared me more than the version we got.

It actually looks like a Resident Evil game. Not saying Resident Evil 4 was a bad game, my favourite of 2005 in fact, but I would've preferred a Resident Evil game that actual was scary, and maintained its original 'survival-horror' theme.

Resident Evil 4 stressed a lot more on action, which is why the gameplay changed so much - reworked camera, new button functions and a much more fast paced story.

Definitely would like to see this implemented (the survival theme) in future Resident Evil titles again, and not the action/horror that was seen in Resident Evil 4.

Plus Leon had a flashlight to boot.

Wow, that looked as good (at some points better) than a lot of next gen games I've seen.

I'm not a fan of the ghost atmosphere, but I would have preferred that to what we got with RE4.

I'm hoping RE5 goes back to RE2's pacing.

If the initial trailer is any indication, RE5's going to keep the fast, action-oriented nature. Remember the silhouettes of running zombies?

Wow, that was really impressive. Very polished and the atmosphere was spot-on. The absolute only thing I didn't like about it was the camera, I can't imagine trying to control Leon with a simply updated version of the oldschool RE camera, it's just too wonky. I'd like them to take everything about that early game, replace Leon with a character from a new IP, use RE4's camera style and ship it. It would be a great way to start the next generation.

Well they could probably add strafing and make the character a tad bit more agile, too, but I'd love it either way.

Wouldn't it make more sense to keep this design under the RE IP, and put RE4's gameplay in a new series?

RE is a popular series name. People now have high hopes for RE5. That said I think Capcom can diversify them correctly.

BTW I think RE3.5 had RE4's aiming system, just not the camera.

Looks awesome, but i'm playing RE4 right now for the first time ever and i'll be damned if i'd rather play what's in that video than what i'm playing right now.

RE4 didn't exactly sell as well as it should have. A lot of non-RE fans didn't get the idea that it was a whole new design, and a lot of real RE fans were off by it. Devil May Cry proved that a canned RE concept could be turned into a totally new property.

Just doesn't seem to make sense to take RE's gameplay and put it in a new series, while turning RE into a straight-up action series. It seems kind of immoral. Better to blend the two concepts.

Well I think the vibe of this clip was much more creepy and nightmare-inducing than the Resident Evil series has turned out to be. RE is about zombies and zombie-related things that have "normal" counterparts, this had children's dolls, really thick suspense and undertones of murder. Also, Leon's reliance on the flashlight makes for a much more intense atmosphere than the RE series, so I think the entire thing would be best suited in a new IP.

I'm not saying RE should deviate from what it's become, because RE4 was excellent, but this was clearly a totally different game. They could take this concept and polish it until they have another successful franchise on their hands that began as a branch of RE, like what you said happened with DMC. It would be a great thing, I think.

Wow, that looks pretty freakin sweet! Res Evil 4 on GC never really scared me, but this actually looks scary. As cool as this looks, it looks like it shares many of the same problems that the early RE's had - bad camera angles and slow and bad character movements. I'd still play this, though, as it looks cool as hell.

RE4 was plenty creepy and scary-- the chainsaw guys were scary as hell. The Regenerators were both creepy and scary. There were still creepy parts-- the only difference is they were interspersed between action sequences rather than slogging through a mansion for the 10,000,000th time. When people say they wish RE4 was scary they really mean they just want more of the same old tired formula with slick new graphics. If "hardcore" fans had their way we'd be playing rehashes of RE1 for all of eternity. We should be thanking god Capcom actually took a chance with the franchise and cared enough not to let it continue stagnating like it was.

I definitely agree that the design should be continued. It just seems twisted to me that Resident Evil would become the world's best action series, and some new IP would become the world's best survival horror series. It just feels funny.

Yeah, I know. It can still retain that 'RE' feel if they do it right.

Remember that whacky train ride in RE4? I want RE5 to stay far away from segments like that.

The only thing remotely scary was the part with the Regenerators, which was very Silent Hill esque anyway. RE4 as a whole is about as scary as Devil May Cry.

You make a good point, but there are more than one kind of creepy and scary. Chainsaw guys and regenerators are definitely creepy and scary, but what we saw in this clip was the kind of thing that messes with your mind. Resident Evil doesn't mess with your mind like that, it just gives you shivers right before you blow something's head off.

I also agree with your comment about sludging through yet another mansion, I think RE4 did an awesome job of avoiding that cliche and if this really does end up as a separate game I hope they'll at least make some variety in the environments.

I prefer the visual style and atmosphere of "RE3.5" but from the little gameplay footage we've seen, I think there was potential for it to be very boring. RE4 is less of a "true" RE game, but it was fun action.

If you want a new Resident Evil game that plays just like the old ones, nothing's preventing you from playing Resident Evil Outbreak: File #2 offline.

The old formula has been rehashed to the point of predictability anyway-- I'd rather have action sequences than zombie #143 popping out of the closet or room-with-big-mirror #246. At least Capcom has finally started to move on from the safe, stale RE1 blueprint.
