I see all this little clickers that let you have your iPod connected to your hifi and still change tracks etc. But then you can't see whats playing, or select another playlist/artist easily.

Is there anything that lets me have the iPod in my hand as the remote, with all its functionality, and then transmits the signal to my hifi? That seems the logical way to do it.

Apart from FM transmitter BTW. something like a wifi or bluetooth adapter, or one of those things you use for video sending.

negative.

Why dont you just get an airport express with airtunes? you can use your laptop to run the itunes library and let that be that.

then how do i control the tunes from my sofa?

I have my xbox in the lounge, streaming from a SAMBA compatible networked HDD. I wanted a solution that didn't need my PC on all the time (not wife-friendly)

and i'm loving the ipod in the bedroom with dock->hifi. But thats close to hand.

So I want to expand that to the spare room. I guess I could get a really long headphone cable and route it around the skirting board.

I'm surprised there isn't a solution like this though - the home potential for an ipod is only half satisfied with it stuck 20ft away from you IMO.

There's nothing like it yet, and this won't help people already have an iPod, but I think there's a good chance of what you want happening with the 5th Gen. iPods.

iPods will definitely go wireless at some point (Apple have already trademarked wireless firewire), it's just a matter of when they get acceptable battery life. A wifi iPod would mean wireless synch, and also streaming via AirTunes to speakers connected to an Airport Express.

So on the iPod you'd just choose the output you want - earephones, hifi, bedroom - and then just navigate and play your songs as normal. I'd definitely like that :)

Buy a Powerbook and wifi setup, then you can remote connect to the Xbox to switch the music.
